I read a good book written by Sue Lytollis, a NZ woman, on the subject of self defence (I've been searching for a GOOD book on self defence for a long time!). She maintained men who attack women have a fantasy of how the situation will go. They attack - woman screams & flails at them ineffectually with their tiny fists, there are tears & begging. She recommends messing with the fantasy as early on as possible by being loud & assertive & not showing how scared you are. Your story fits this theory nicely.
