I would offer the thought that perhaps you might be overexaggerating the concept to the point where it becomes a hazard rather than a help. I've done that to myself more than once when I was working on my skills. Try keeping the same idea, but allowing the flexibility of doing it less intensely... maybe that will make the fist formation work for you.
If you can get your hands on Sosai Oyama's books like "This is Karate", or "What is Karate", or "Advanced Karate" etc. He has included step by step instructions on how to make a fist with supportive pictures.
