Randers Karate Skole will be hosting the Open Jutlandish Championships in Semi-contact karate. Rules may differ slightly from those you know, so I will give a brief summary at the bottom of this post. The championship is for people of any level of skill, but is ideal for those who feel they are not yet ready for knock-down or those who just wish to get some experience. There are many weight-divisions as well as an A and B class (men only). The goal is to give the fighters as much experience as possible, against equal opponents. Where possible, the fighters will fight in pools, and is likely to get at least 2-3 fights. This is a friendly championship, where we focus on good karate, a friendly and respectful atmosphere and generally just great budo spirit.

Fights will be fought on tatami.

An effective punch or strike to the body is awarded ippon (1 point). An effective kick to the body is given nihon (2 pts), as will unbalancing the opponent followed by an effective technique. Kicks to the head will be awarded with sanbon (3 pts), as will a succesful throw followed by a controlled finishing technique (remember that contact to a downed opponent is forbidden). The fight will last for 3 minutes, whereafter the fighter with most points will be victorious. In case of hikiwake in the finals, there will be 1 minute encho-sen and hantei. Should the points reach a difference of 8, it will be considered win by KO. It will also be considered a KO if a fighter is not able to continue after a 10 second count, provided of course that the technique was legal. Penalties will be divided into category 1 and category 2 offenses, similar to WKF.
Mouth guard, shins (covering both shin and instep) and groin protector are compulsory for all fighters. Female fighters must also wear breast protectors (cup type). All entrants must be at least 18 years of age.
