The bit about only getting kicked in the head by your wife once was my favorite

Once Mrs. XC and I were sparring, by happenstance after an argument; she came after me quite vigorously. When another black belt commented on her tenacity, I cut my eyes to respond when the Mrs. drew her right hand back and cocked it upward (I'm about a foot taller...); I could tell it was going to be a wallop because she had a pretty good rotation at the hips.

I looked back at her and jumped out of the way; I took my mouthpiece out and said "WTH are you doing!!?!?!?" She looked at her fist, then at me, then her fist and said "what...I wasn't going to punch you in the face or anything :D"

Martially trained spouses can be a dangerous thing Monty!

Well it should be Ros's turn on the wriite up but she's upstairs having a little sleepy so I thought I'd do it:)

Really didn't want to go training this morning, I've got a really bad sore throught and generally feel like poo:(

Anyway, I thought, let's get on with it and perhaps I'll forget about my woes. So off we went.....

Busy session today with 6 People training, Started off running through Kihon 4 reps slow and under tension then 10 full power.

Split into 3s and one person held the punch bag still while the other 2 alternated mawashi geris into it. then swapped who was holding the bag and went again then swapped the third and final time so everyone had a) Held the bag and b) kicked off both legs. I really quite enjoy this exercise:)

Partnered up with Ros and we did defence and counter/takedowns against Mae geris then Mawashi geris then low kicks then ushiro geris.

Did white belt and then blue belt kata, recently I've been getting confused during white belt kata because blue belt kata is in my head screaming "NO DO THIS MOVE NOW" but today I think i made a decent job of both.

Finished off with a partner doing the old devilish Burpee, left mawashi, right mawashi one minute thereof then a minutes rest whilst I held the bag then did it for a second minute.

little bit of stretching at the end.

I was glad I decided to go training and felt great afterwards, forgot all about my sore throat. This lasted for all of 1/2 hour before my body said "I thought you realised I was Ill, right I'm gonna make you suffer for this boy" and I now feel much worse than I did earlier. I'm going to try Choclolate see if that makes me feel any better!

Ros got to the write up first tonight.

It was good to be back at training tonight:)

The burpees and Mawashis were a killer as usual, unfortunately the black belt who was holding the pads for Ros and I wasn't aware of this lovely exercise so guess who had to demo it to him:(

During the sparring we had to try for a head technique, body technique and take down. After Ros and I sparred Gary asked how many of the three we got and I said we both got two. But on the way to Tescos afterwards we discussed it and I have to change the score to 2-1 to Ros:(

Looking forward to saturdays session already.

Saturday, Enshin Training

Well, that was a hard one today!

It was "Bag week" so we started off with 20 Minutes on the punch bags, close range(punches, elbows and knees), Long range(mae geri, mawashi geri), Max5(10 mawashi geris off the same leg), cross over sit-ups and (a new one to us) Russian twists(sitting up holding a medicine ball twist to the left and touch the medicine ball to the ground then twist to right and touch it down again)

Again I managed to get up quite high on the bag, not sure whether the kick was coming into the bag at the correct angle though. It has to be all the stretching we do in class.

Then we did 5 press-ups with one hand on the medicine ball then swap it over to the other side and do five more then jump up and throw the medicine ball at thje punch bag 5 times off each side. We did this twice, I'm thinking the shoulders are gonna be bad tomorrow.

Split into pairs and worked on various Defences/Takedowns....

1) Low kick comes in, block then grab and hook the neck and do a sort of spinning throw

2) Mae geri comes in, block and grab the gi, move in at 45 degrees turning the attacker and then taking their supporting leg form under them

3) High mawashi comes in, block, move behind and either take them down backwards or forwards depending on how their body is positioned

5) Grabbed on arm and attacker moves legs in readiness for a mawashi geri, Counter grab, Turn in, pull on grabbing side, push on opposite side and sweep the leg

We've done some of these before and I though my 1 & 2 are coming along quite well:) 3 was ok but kept cocking up 4 (Looked like I was humping Rik's leg according to Gary ;))

Ros's number 4 was spot on, looked great and Gary had her show it to all of us. And then she demo'd it as well;)

Then we ended with Tabata, well I say Tabata it was 1.25 X Tabata really sprints interspersed with Press-ups, Pike sit-ups, side to side jumping across the mats(twice) and finally a dose of Vitamin B.

But was it the end....... No ofcourse it wasn't finished off proper with some medicine ball slams.

Gary must have been psychic about the Sensei Evil cards!!

It's no exaggeration to say this small (4 people today) class is a pleasure to teach. I appreciate those who make the effort to turn up and sweat. Rik drives 110 miles, sometimes at 6:00am to train. He's done it for two years and that's fantastic dedication. Pawel drives 100 when he comes. Awesome.

I felt sick as a dog to start with, (note to self: NEVER eat porage made with full-fat milk) but once we got going that eased off a bit.

Fun class tonight, Started off with a quick warm up then we did Oizuki X 60, Junzuki X 60, Hook X 60 and Shitazuki X 60 first 30 from left fighting stance then second 30 from right fighting stance.

We then had 4 stations one was Hiza geri, one Mae geri, one Mawashi geri(gedan and Chudan) and one was Jodan mawashi geri(but luckily for me you have the wall bars to help with this one ;)). 20 kicks at each station and we did all four station 3 times.

The black belts then got the pads and we split into groups of 3 infront of each black belt. We did the strikes we did earlier but this time against the pads. We then did Hiza geri and then mawashi geri against the pads as well.

Couple of goes through Blue belt kata. Feeling quite good about this kata now :)

Did a bit of sprinting up and down the Dojo then the kids went home and the rest of us put our pads on.

Did some sparring with a black belt "Reffing" about 3 rounds to warm us up then about 4 rounds with the refs.

Finished of with some stretching.

Well, Gary surpassed himself today in his "Evil Exercise" creation:eek:

We started off doing 20 X all the Kihon strikes and 10 X some of the Kihon Kicks as a warm up.

Now, I thought the Burpee, left mawashi geri, right mawasji geri was the horriblest thing to be dreamt up but I was wrong. We all put on our bag gloves and stood infront of a punch bag then it was a minute of running on the spot with knees up whilst punching the bag in time with your legs, 30 seconds rest and off we went again for another minute, 30 seconds rest and then off we went again! I thought I was going to die:eek:

We then spent some time on defence/counter against a Grab/hook neck/Hiza geri. Then defence/counter against a grab and mawashi geri, and a variation on the first one witha different throw.

White and Blue belt kata against an opponent.

Finished off with half a tabata (thankfully) because we were back to the horribleness that is Knees up punching again. At least with the 20 second bursts I could count the number I was doing and then could judge (roughly) on the subsequent sets how much longer there was to do.

Afterwards felt really good:D:D

1 minute of russian twists

1 minute of medicine ball situps

3 minutes of mawashi geri/ushiro mawashi kake geri over the top of your partners head as they squat down(alternating between kicking and squatting)

1 Minute of similar but four kicks instead of two

Great session today. Just Me & Paul & Gary

Started of with the Bi-weekly 20 minute Bag work session. Long range, Short range, Max 5 and (what seemed like more than the usual amount of Cross over sit-ups).

Defence and counter against various kicks, Me doing the stuff from White and Blue belt kata and Paul doing any defence and counter he chose(Monty was flying about all over the place).

Did some defence against ushiro geris as well.

Then we did some defence against punches. Attacker did front, reverse, front and the defence was a kind of Soto Uke, Soto Uke, Gedan barai followed up by a Grab/Hook/Hiza geri.

did a couple of minutes of sparring type stuff where paul managed(not to tricky I guess) to back me into the wall:eek: So we did a drill where I "sabaki'd" out of the way of the attacks and then we did another minute of sparring type stuff where I was trying to move side to side.

had some fun with a defence against Punch, punch, low kick where you do a Hiza geri then attempt a rolling throw, Partner resists so you switch and take them down backwards.

Finished off with an amount of time(could have been a minute could have been 5(for all I know)) of alternating kicks into the bag I kick left leg mawashi Paul kicks right....... An amount of rest(again who knows how long, felt like about 5 seconds) and we swapped sides and went again. I stopped half way through but with Paul and Gary shouting at me I sucked it up and made it to the end(Just).

Now I'm sat in the pub writting it up:)

Throwing up is never the aim Monty.

I like the McLaren ethos, "Everything for a reason"

When applied to training, the reason for the finisher is just to prove to ourselves that we can take charge of the body and squeeze a bit more out no matter how tired we feel. It should obviously be demanding but not to the point where we make a mess.

It's strange with Saturdays. I've got juniors wanting to come but so far I've resisted as I don't want "drop the kids off at karate then go shopping".

Looking to the future I don't intend to replace our ageing puzzle mats. (They've got bits breaking off and take ages to set up)

That will mean Saturdays will be THE session for bagwork and takedowns on the nice thick judo mats. Mondays and Thursdays will be for general training; kihon, kata, padwork, kumite etc etc.

I can see the difference already with the Saturday ones, working on mats more regularly certainly pays off.

That's where the sense of achievement comes in. If you think it's already decided where's the challenge?

This is another reason I like tests short and sharp, you've got to get things right on the night. If I test 100 things the odd mistake means little, but if I'm only testing a few (and nobody knows for certain what those few things will be) there's far less room for error ...

PS Fred, we don't need erasers here ...

Thursday, Enshin Training

well it was a weird class tonight, gary had to raise his voice a few times to the kids and that kind of made for a strange atmosphere.

We started with Kihon as warm up and did 50 reps of Chudan zuki, Jodan zuki, ago uchi and shita zuki then Jodan uke, chudan soto nagashi and gedan barai.

We then stopped for Gary to demo what might appear to be self defence/release from grabs for the three "Blocks". The reason I say "Might appear to be" is because Gary continued to tell us that complicated releases would not be the best thing in a self defence situation and we should use this as a method of remembering how to perform the "Blocks" correctly.

Then it was back to sweating with 50 X Hiza geri, Mae geri & 50 Mawashi geri.

The higher grades got a set of pads and we did three Mae geri off right leg for a minute then three off the left then three mawashi geri off the right and three off the left then three hiza geri off the right and three off the left.

Still on the pads we did Mae geri and then depending on which way the pad man moved would decide if you swapped leg and did a mawashi geri and Hiza geri or stayed with the same leg and did them.

sprinting up and down the dojo for a finisher before the youngsters went.

The last half hour was doing Kata against an opponent. was picked up on a couple of things but I made less mistakes than last time so that's good:)

well it was a weird class tonight

It was every instructors worst nightmare. Tests coming up, the juniors all want to move up but things like 'tight fists' and 'back hands up' seemed to have lost their importance. There'll be a few disappointed ones on test night if they go in with that attitude.

I broke my own rule last night, and spent more time going on at those that wouldn't try than encouraging those that were making an effort.

Normal service will be resumed on Monday. :)

Very good session today, Ros has done the main write up today(well we're both sat in the pub looking over each other's shoulders).

One of the things that Ros didn't mention was that I was doing the attacks for Lee (Black, Brown and Green belt Kata). When I say "Doing" I mean being thrown round the dojo:) Ros assures me it was very funny to watch.

The main thing I'll take away from today is to move and block kicks rather than just block.

As I put on Ros' page, keep aiming to touch the target, with control, when you practise together. Once you have to move it soon becomes automatic. I'm sure Ros will happily supply the impact!

Quick warm up and then into the Basics. 4 slow and 20 fast of all the basics.

Mawashi geri/ Ushiro mawashi kake geri over a partners head 1 Minute twice.

The black belts got a set of pads each, and we lined up in groups of three. Started off doing Mae geri then depending on which way the padman went grab, hook neck, hiza geri then Mawashi geri. Then we did the same but with 2 hiza geris and 2 mawashi geri. Then we were pushing against the pad man then when you are just about to move move to the side grab, hook, 2 hiza, 2 mawashi. Finished the pad section with pushing against the pad man then pushing them backwards to make space and then step off line and mawashi geri.

White belt and Blue belt kata

moved onto some sparring, 1 minute bout with 20 seconds lower grade attacking, 20 second higher grade attacking then 20 both attacking. Felt quite good about my sparring today, got some sabaki going in it :)

The finsher was "The Cards" jogging round doing either lunges/Lunge jumps, Sit ups/Pike sit ups, Press ups/hand clap press ups or (you guessed it) Burpees/Full Bastards. 1 to 5 reps of each depending on the card drawn and then unluckily the joker "Happened" to be the last card so it was 5 of each:eek:

Full enshin warm up

20 Reps of all kihon strikes, blocks and kicks (apart from Mawashi geri which was 50 of).

partnered up and did Mawashi geri/Ushiro mawashi kake geri over your partners head for 1 minute. Changed partners and did another minute.

Then the black belts got the pads and we did a combination of punch, punch, punch, grab and hook neck, hiza geri, mawashi geri. 1st minute was with the padman standing still 2nd minutes was with the padman moving round. 3rd minute was pushing against the padman then on go pushing them back and depending on how far they went either Hiza geri or Mawashi geri.

Then the kids went home and we got our mitts and pads on. Started off in three's doing one person "On" and the other two took it in turn to "attack" allowing the "on" person time to do some sabaki defence. Felt my defences worked well and I'm certain that our saturdays are paying off.

Finished off with a few rounds of sparring.

Saturday AM, Kendal weekend seminar

about 35 people on the seminar, we started off altogether doing some forward rolls, shoulder rolls, break falls across the Dojo and back (and it is a LARGE dojo)

Then we were split into two groups, we've got put in the "Knows a bit of Judo" group because we were here last year.

First session was working on "Traditional" Judo sweeps, quite helpful really :)

Second session was working on one of Iain's "mini kata" a combination of Head butt, Knee, push away, Kinteki geri, palm heel, slap and hammerfist. The techniques sort of flow nicely together(for example the push away cocks the hip for the kinteki geri that then cocks the other hip for the palm heel etc etc.

Third session was applying the sweeps from session one without using the Judo grabs and a bit of ground work.

Lunch now, back later.

Sunday, Kendal weekend day 2

Yesterdays warm up was done by Mike so it was judo based, today's was done by Ian so it was sparring based.

Started off with you partner with one person being the "Mover" and one the follower. The "mover" moves where ever they want and the follower has to keep their sparring distance between them. Added into this some punches to parry, then some hooks to block then some thigh kicks to either block, avoid or take(working on the principle it's better to take a kick to the thight than take a punch to the chin).

Split back into the two groups and we went off with Mike and worked on some throwing drills and some Strangles. By the end of this session Ros was getting the throws pretty good.

Swapped over again and Iain went through some power generation stuff. Firing the hip slightly before the punch, definitely gonna be trying this out on the bags on Tuesday:) Then we did some more Bassai Bunkai, Ros got a good comment from Iain(as she threw me to the floor).

Back to the Judo area for the next session and we carried on with more strangles, chokes and Locks. Also did some ground work, pinning and controlling your opponent.

Moved back to the karate area and did more bunkai form Bassai dai, some nice gouges :) and a particularly nasty low kick to just under the calf muscle. I was practising on Ros, kicked her a couple of times and didn't get the "sweet spot", Moved the kick up an Inch and got a "Yes, That's the F*****ng spot" as she hopped around on one leg ;)

Over all a very enjoyable and interesting weekend. Hope to be able to transfer some of it to our normal Training.

Well, first class for a week, first class as a yellow belt. Surely it'll be an easy one?

Started off with a very quick warm up and then straight into kicks.

Various amounts of reps ranging from 10(yoko keage) to 50(most of the others) to 120(Mawashi geri). There was no fear of us not sweating by the end of them :)

Three of the black belts got the pads and we split into three's and then did three reps of hit what you're given. Using the first two as range finders/positioners then power on the last one. Then it was push the pad man back and grab/Mawashi geri then grab/hook/hiza geri concentrating on moving to the outside position.

Next was Kata time. Yellow and Blue belt to the count then Yellow against an opponent twice. I am so glad that a) I've got the Kata DVDs and b) I have my own office so I was able to do a bit of research/practice before tonight;)

Finished off with a tabata of sprints and Burpees, Jump squats, V situps & Handclap press ups.

I don't look at the clock to see how long is left of the class, or how much we've done. I simply like to know what the time is. If I go to work without a watch I feel strange all day until I can get home and regain my timepeice:)

Friday, Gym Training

Got to the gym a bit before Ros today so add an extra 5 Minutes on the running machine for me:)

We started(when Ros eventually got there ) with 10 minutes on the cross trainer as a warm up.

We both did a few goes through Yellow belt Kata, Gonna watch the DVD later and see which bits we mucked up;)

I grabbed some focus mits and Ros spent a couple of minutes doing Jab, Cross, Hook, Cross

Then I spent a couple on the heavy bag doing some combos.

Last 20 minutes we spent on various weight machines.

Monday, Enshin Training

Full Enshin warm up to start with.

20 reps of all Kihon strikes and blocks, each of us had a chair at one point and got a little sit down, then we had to raise our self 1 inch above the chair in Kiba Dachi and do 20 Reps of Shita zuki then we got a little sit down then up again for 20 reps of Hijiata then 20 reps of Shuto uchi oroshi.

Kicks next with a partner proving a target. Was struggling to keep up with the count doing Kakato Otoshi geri, glad I was partnered with Lee who was encouraging me on :)

Two of the black belts got a set of pads each and we all had several goes at the first five moves of our next kata.

Then we did the first five moves to the count.

Finished off with 5 rounds of sparring drills, lower grade attacks for first 30 seconds and higher grade defends/counters then swap roles for the last 30 seconds.

Thursday, Enshin Training

:D Really enjoyable class tonight.

Quick warm up and then straight into it, from fighting stance straight front punch 20 off each side, reverse punch 20 each side, front hook 20 off each back shovel hook 20 off each side.

Again in fighting stance, push your imaginary opponent back to create space and then mae geri(20 off each side) then similar with mawashi geri.

Oh and there was a grab and Hiza geri thingy as well.

Then the pads came out and we did Front straight punch X 5 into the pads then swap sides and same again, 5 X reverse off each side, 5 X left hook & 5 time right hook, pad man moved slightly to the left or right and we'd do either right or left shovel hook depending on which way he went X 10.

5 x Hiza geri off each side

Push the pad man back and do either Mae geri or mawashi geri depending on what he gives you.

Partnered up and did some defences/take downs against a mae geri. Really glad we do this kind of stuff on a Saturday:) Helped alot with tonights drills.

Got our mitts and pads on and did several (8 or 10) rounds of sparring, managed to get some of the low kicks blocked properly(but not all of them, Ouch! My left thigh is going to hurt in the morning).

Finisher was 2 teams of 5, we had to do 50 burpees between us as quick as possible. I was determined to do more than ten but thought I ought to stop at eleven so everyone could have a go;)

Warmed up with some punches and kicks from fighting stance....

10 front lunge punch off left then right, 10 front/reverse punches off left then right, 10 Front/reverse/hook off right then left and then 10 front/reverse/hook/shovel hook off left then right.

10 Hiza geri off left then right, 10 Hiza/Mae geri off left then right, 10 Hiza/Mae/gedan mawashi geri off left and right, 10 Hiza/Mae/Chudan Mawahi geri off left then right and finally 10 Hiza/Mae/Jodan Mawashi geri off left then right.

Proper sweaty by the end of that 10 minutes!

The Mats came out and we made three matted areas, Highest grade on the mat and everyone else taking it in turns to attack with Mae geri, Person "On" had to defend and take down the attacker each person was in the middle for a minute. Same deal but with defending against mawashi geri, ushiro geri, grab/Jodan mawashi geri and grab and hook neck. I was glad we'd done some of this on Saturday so it was fresh in my mind.

Next each person took it in turns to be on the mats for 2 minutes defending against a constant stream of any of the previous attacks.

The finisher was 2 minutes of Burpee then left mawashi geri/right mawashi geri(thanks Joe, next time when given a choice you say 1 Minute ;) )

I then had to be the "Mat Monkey" and get up on top of the door way and have the mats passed up so I could stack them up. I think I might have put the 5th Mat in the wrong way up;)

By the way, whats the difference between a "normal" hook and a shovel hook?

Just dawned on me on the drive into the office this morning. I think the reason it's called a shovel hook is because the hand tracks the same trajectory as your back hand would if you were shovelling a load of dirt.

So it starts at the right hip, travles upwards and across the body and ends infront of the left shoulder, with the impact point being somewhere in the middle of the two points.

So I spoke this out loud and got a "Well of course it is" from Ros:o

I also often end up having to tweak the plan once I get started. But for me, it has been a huge help to sit down ahead of time, think about what I want to accomplish, and put a plan on paper. Then if something comes up - like if someone is using the equipment you needed - its easy to come up with another approach to accomplish the same thing. My training sessions have become far more productive since I started planning them out.

Thursday, Enshin Training

Started of with a partner, one of you lays face down on the floor whilst the other does a sideways jump over and back then partner gets up and you get down and they jump over and back.

Then we all lined up and did 50(ish) reps of Chudan Tzuki, Ago uchi, Seiken Mawashi Uchi & Shita Tzuki. We then did 50 reps of Jodan Uke, Chudan Soto Nagashi & Gedan Barai but with a twist, all of them were done open handed.

It was a very warm night and the sweat was starting to flow quite freely, and just to make sure it continued that way we did 50 reps of Hiza geri, Kinteki geri & Mae geri. We then partnered up again and did 50 Gedan Mawashi geri and 50 Chudan Mawashi geri using your partner as a target aiming to just touch.

The rest of the session was all kata:D Each move of our grade kata against the padman for 2 minutes for each move.

Then to finish off we partnered up and spent 2 X 2 minutes doing any two of the kata moves against an opponent.

We were thinking, we need a "Gary" Dictionary;)

Easy: 1) Adj; Hard, Today is going to be an Easy one. 2) Verb: To Sweat

Sweat: 1) A way of showing Gary that we are working hard enough

Challenging: 1) Adj; Hard

Steady: see Easy

Fun: 1) Adj; A word to describe a easy session that is also challenging and will result in Sweat

Hard: 1) Adj;

This won't hurt: 1) popular phrase that normally requires qualifying further IE "This won't hurt me! You, however, will be limping for a week"

Saturday, Martial Arts show Birmingham, Day 1

Left the house bright and early, well 7.45am, and headed over to Solihull to meet one of our karate Buddies from our old style. Arranged to meet in the wetherspoons pub (coz they open at 7am for breakfast). Got to the pub, saw Ryan drive past then waited 15 Mins and he still hadn't arrived!

I happened to look at the sign next to the door that said "Welcome to the Assembly rooms" and though S**t we're in the wrong pub! Caught up ith him eventually though.

Anyhoo, got to the NEC and did the first of the seminars we'd signed up for, "Street effective self defence" with Mr John Skillen.

We worked on Striking from any position, arms folded, leaning against some thing, even from sitting down. Very fun:) looked at power generation as well, rocking slightly forward then backward then firing the hip then the fist. I did feel sorry for the bloke that John decided to demo most of the stuff on coz he kept getting smacked in the face! Peter Consterdine was there as well helping out, I'm kinda glad(but at the same time sad) that he didn't come and help us because Ros's punches were hurting me enough through the pad, I'd hate to think what his would have felt like.

Had a bit of a walk round and watched some demos, Kuk Sool won, chinese water boxing?? & Shastar Vidiya to name a few.

Back to the seminar area for our next one, "Fight Tactics" with Alfie Lewis. I have to admit I wasn't expecting to sweat in these mini seminars but sweat we did! We did a proper warm up, Running, press-ups, stretches etc etc then we did several kumite drills that were a bit to complicated for this boys little brain :( The first one was front punch coming in which you block and counter then reverse punch comes and you block and backfist then reverse punch comes again and you block with the hand that just backfisted and backfist with the one you just blocked with.

Enjoyed the drill where your opponent throws a mawashi geri and you step off and low kick under the leg that's coming towards you and then backfist. Alfie even walked past and said "Well it looks like you two have got that one" :)

Back at the hotel now with a beer and an Internet. Hoping to get on the Peter Consterdine workshop tomorrow.

Ros wasn't with us today so it looked like it was only going to be Me, Gary and Gary's son training today.

Jogging up and down for a minute(I guess) then stopping and doing the normal warm up exercises then jogging then more warm up exercises...

Just as we were finishing the warm up one of the gloucester bunch turned up and joined in.

Started with one person one side of the heavy bag one the other and one behind holding it. Did Left Gedan Mawashi geri then other person did Right Gedan Mawashi geri for 1 Minute(again I'm guessing) then straight into Left Chudan Mawashi geri(for another minute).

Swapped sides and did the same but with Right leg. there were some nice slapping noises coming from the bag today, probably because we weren't wearing leg pads.

Then we each had a go at 1 minute of VB/Left Mawashigeri/Right Mawashi geri.

Did some work on defence against straight punch, Punch comes in and you move/parry/grab the arm and push it away from you(to stop the opponent being able to counter) then hook the neck and rolling throw

The gloucester contingent thought that pulling the arm towards you was better than pushing it away and tried to show Gary the error of his ways

Then we worked on take downs, Mae geri defence and Mawashi geri defence + takedown. I felt quite good about some of them:)

Finished with ten second sprints(20 second rest) X 6

I encourage questions if anyone is unsure of what we're doing, but simply don't understand the point of someone driving for three hours to dispute what I'm teaching

After all, I leave the house at daft o'clock on a Saturday to escape arguments.

Thursday, Enshin Training

Great atmosphere at class tonight, the youngsters and the Oldies were back in the one class again tonight(due to the Bank Holiday week).

Started off with a quick warm up that included so kicking whilst holding the wall bars.

Kihon strikes and blocks X 30
Kihon kicks X 20 (including the axe kick that we don't do too often in Kihon)

Partnered up and the adults did Mawashi geri/Ushiro mawashi kake geri X 2 over partners head for 2 minutes then it was the youngsters go, I volunteered to stay up for the second 2 minutes, proper sweaty by the end of that :)

next was push partner away then Ushiro geri then the youngsters did it whilst the oldies(apart from the volunteers) had a rest.

Kata time, yellow belt X 2, one following a black belt then the second with an attacker.

Really enjoyed the next bit, pads came out and so did the cards, depending on what Gary pulled from the pack determined number and technique including Punches, Mae Geri, Mawashi Geri & Hiza geri. Oh and as we didn't show enough sympathy for his foot we had to do a Burpee before each set of techniques:eek: When the joker was drawn it was 5 of each technique. I never knew there was 4 jokers in a pack of cards!!

Finished off with some sparring, oh and being a moving punch bag for the kids:eek:

You've missed a bit:

with partner, grab left sleeve (bring right leg back) and jodan mawashi geri, then grab right sleeve (bring left leg back) and jodan mawashi geri

Then as above but preceded by hook, hiza geri to left side then hook, hiza geri to right side

:)

Cracking effort tonight from everyone.

My comments at the end: Every club needs a small hardcore of members that are there regularly pushing each other along. We had one for years (Paul Steve Declan Matt Giv et al) but the last few years - as some have moved - it's not really been there.

Tonight I could see the next group emerging, pushing each other along.

I felt energised when I went home, and optimistic. Cracking!

Friday, Gym Training

Pheew it's a hot one hear today! Just the sort of weather for going to the gym and sweating like a piggy:)

I was a bit early getting there so squeezed in a quick 5 mins on the treadmill, Ros joined me and we did 10 Mins on the Cross-Trainer.

Moved onto the mats and did White, Blue & Yellow belt Kata to the count then Yellow belt against an opponent.

Grabbed a kick shield and we took it in turns to spend an amount of time working on Ushiro geri.

2 sets each of 1 Minute of Burpee, Left Mawashi geri, Right Mawashi geri

Sit-ups X 1 Minute

Playing with what we did last night(that i forgot all about in the write up) we did a minute each of moving off line to the left and doing a Right Mawashi geri then moving off line to the right and doing a Left Mawashi geri

1 minute of Mawashi geri/Ushiro Mawashi Kake geri over partners head.

Finished with a Tabata of running on the spot whilst punching the bag(I have to admit that a) Ros had to force me to do this and b) I had to stop the running and just punch for a couple of the sets:()

Didn't go on the weights again, people just get in the way! Need to find another way of building up our strength.

Saturday, Enshin Training

Ros has ran off to have a shower at her Mum's house (ok it's only 2 seconds across the garden but hey) so it falls to me to do the main write up again.

Warmed up on the bags, there were three of us (plus Gary) so it was Ros holding the bag whilst Rik and I did front/reverse/uppercut punch for a minute, then Rik held the bag while Ros and I did the same(but swapped sides) then I held the bag. Ros managed to miss the bag and land an uppercut right in my ribs:eek: and there was a strange noise that came from me:(

Did the same again but this time with Mawashi geri.

Then we spent some time working on defending against kicks. Blocking the kick, sticking in a punch then grabbing and Hiza geri then taking your opponent down. One person was "On" and the other two took it inturns to attack.

Again it was defence against kicks but now we were free to defend in any way we wanted. Trying to finish off for a three pointer each time.

Then it was defence against any technique and, again, going for the three pointer.

Finished off with gary showing us some Strength training we could do on the free weights. 5 reps (lowest weight), 4 reps (middle weight), 3 reps (Heaviest weight), 3 reps (Middle weight) and then 3 reps (lowest weight). As Gary put it, there's certainly lots of room for improvement with us :(

That's exciting though! When you start strength training you feel the benefits almost immediately.

It adds a dig to your strikes and makes you harder to pull around, so for a fairly modest investment of time, say 2 x 20 minutes a week, you gain a lot.

A good though basic start is what Dan John refered to as the "Southwood" program.

Power cleans

Overhead presses

Front squats

Bench press

All 8. 6. 4.

12 sets in about 12 minutes. You'll need a little coaching on the power cleans which I'm happy to do should you wish ...

They're long gone.

As the KB's need a bit more skill (if they're not going to bite) I'd always recommend barbell/dumbell work as a foundation. They teach a bit of balance, strengthen the core and connective tissues and prepare the body for more ballistic work.

Thanks for the workout and vid, Gary. My ankle's not very happy when I try and do squats (either arse sticks out or heel has to lift off the floor a bit) so I might have to replace with something else.

If you lift both heals you should be okay. They call that typically a "Hindu" Squat. Not really recommended with weights but as a bodyweight squat it works well.
