Thursday, Enshin training

Ros has done the main write up. I got out of my work colleagues car at 6.35pm walked into the house, turned round and walked straight back out again and got straight into our car to go off for training.

Spent the last two days up in Liverpool for work. Got back totally knackered so I wasn't one of the eight who stayed behind to spar(although I obviously had to stay behind and wait for Ros).

The sparring is optional Monty, so you did the right thing. I don't want people doing it if they've (how did Ros describe it? Oh yeah) shot their bolt, that's when injuries happen.

I'm up bright and early after a good nights sleep so I feel back to normal :) I suppose we'll find out in about an hour an a halfs time ;)

Have you got the hang of the new green belt kata?

I wouldn't say got the hang of it, If you said talk me through each move I could describe it too you but it's now a case of putting that into practise. I couldn't talk you through the attacks though and knowing them greatly helps learning the kata itself.

Saturday, Enshin Training

Well, that was quite horrible! But in a good way :D

Started off with 20 Minutes of bag work, Long distance, Short distance, 10 kicks, moving round and Cross over situps. Gary suggested that if I didn't want to do the cross-over situps I could do star situps(eg: arms and legs outstretched bringing right fingers to left toes) For some strange reason I thought "Yeah, That'll be easier", It wasn't:eek:

Ooh, and the lifting the rear leg seems to have been sorted:)

Then we did a three man drill with one person on and the other taking it inturn to attack. Trying to get flowing defence and takedowns and trying to keep attacker one in the path of attacker two.

Three rounds each of this for the three of us. Particularly knackering as I keep having to get up off my arse when the others had put me on it:)

next was kata, White, Blue and Yellow no count. We attempted green with no count but it wasn't good so we reverted back to "by the numbers". I then had a go(badly, really badly) at brown belt kata.

Finished with three minutes in the style of tabata.

The way I try and stay on top of the katas is to think of them as counters to attacks straight from the start, you can get very flat footed if you are not thinking about what's coming as well as what you are going to do. This i guess is the basis of sabaki, very counter attacking.

Ros has done the main write up of tonight. Really enjoyed tonight, especially the kata and, within that, especially my Yellow belt kata. I felt that had there been an opponent infornt of me the techniques would have been right on target :)

I must say that Ros did amazing in that last excercise, I was glad I was in the Holding back role rather than the being held back and having to do stuff role ;)

Normal 10 minutes on the cross trainer to warm up.

1 Minute rounds of....

alternating Mawashi geri into long bag. Ros left leg me right leg.
Hit what ever the pad man gives you.
Right leg forward: Front, Reverse, Shovel.
Left leg forward: Front, Reverse, Shovel.
Sit-ups(I think I spied that Ros was doing cross over situps but I didn't want to seem too interested. She might have expected me to do them too;)).
Mawashi geri/Ushiro mawashi kake geri over squatting partner.
Russian Twists.
Burpee, Right Mawashi geri, Left Mawashi geri.

Green belt kata twice then Yellow then Blue.

Gary got there (thanks again for coming down Gary:)) and showed us some more stuff to do on the free weights. Even without any actual weights on the bar I found the thrusters pretty exhausting:eek:

Thursday, Dojo Training

A deceptively nasty one tonight......

Started off with the full Enshin warm up.

Then it was three rounds of jogging round the dojo trying to get behind someone and tap them on the back.

Lined up and did 10 or 20 reps of some of the kihon strikes and blocks, then some of the kicks but done slightly differently, all done from zenkutso dachi.

Partnered up and did Mawashi geri/Ushiro mawashi kake geri X2 over squatting partners head, then similar but 2 kicks rather than 4.

Did a drill of three punches, hiki mawashi, hiza geri, mawashi geri

The pads came out and we did 3 lots of 10 Press-ups, get up and do lots of punches for an amount of time(possibly 20 Seconds)

some of the lower grades(including me) then had to hold the pads whilst the black belts did the same, I would have encouraged Declan to hit harder but he was doing just fine without ;)

3 rounds of 10 resisted squats followed by a sprint up and down the dojo.

Partnered up again and did some sparring drill with one person attacking for the first 30 seconds then switch roles then alternating for the last 30 seconds. The youngsters got up and picked a senior to partner and we did the same again but the last 30 seconds was them kicking and punching the senior as hard as possible. The little lad I partnered was laughing at the end and told me that my Tummy was all "Bony":D. I'm taking this to mean that it was hard because I was tensing it:)

6 of us stayed on and did some sparring:)

Monday, Enshin Training

Warmed up doing the following in line

Front, Reverse punch
Front, Reverse, Shovel hook
Front, Reverse, Shovel hook, Hiza geri, Mawashi geri
Front, Reverse, Shovel hook, Hiza geri, Mawashi geri, Sweep, Reverse punch(to downed opponent)

Then the pads came out and we did the last set of techniques but with an actual opponent

Next we changed the single leg sweep to a double legged sweep

Finally we changed the double legged sweep to a different single legged sweep

The mats came out and we spent the last section with one person "On" defending and countering against various attacks

This got me thinking back to the first time we trained with the mats down, Doing the same defence against a grab & high round house kick, as the opponent starts the kick you counter grab, turn into the opponent, pull on the grabbing arm, push their opposite shoulder and sweep their supporting leg. I don't think I managed to get it to work once:(

This time however most of them worked(some better than others but ...)

a) she's a lazy cow(she told me to put that)
b) She felt a bit poo so went to bed

Full Enshin warm up to start

Got into groups of three and did 10 seconds on 20 seconds rest X 2 of

Fast feet
High knees
Tuck jumps

Lined up and did varing reps of all Kihon strikes, blocks and kicks

Partnered up and did some kicking drills.

First was standing side to side stepping up and mawashi geri off the front foot aiming for the partners face(with their hands just infront of it ).

Next was Mae geri off the back leg partner kushus(sp?) back to avoid then they kick and you kushu back and so on. We did this one twice with different partners.

Kata was next and we did Yellow belt twice, white belt once and exercises when the others were doing a kata we didn't know.

The pads came out and we did some Three punch, Hiki mawashi, hiza geri then we did the same but with a Mawashi geri on the end as well. Felt that my Hiza geri and Mawashi geri were nice and powerful tonight :)

Side step up and mawashi geri off the front leg at partners head
Mae geri as partner Kyushus back
Quick mawashi geris

Then we did some sparring drills with alternating attacks and sabaki defences

Finished with some light sparring

8 of us stayed behind and did some heavier contact sparring:)

Felt a bit wobbly at one point and wasn't sure if I was going to do the "afters" sparring but it passed quite quickly:)

Monday, Enshin Training

Quick warm up followed by a sort of shadow sparring drill wher you were either a) Moving round in fighting stance or b) Doing defence and counters then we'd do 5 second burst of all out attacking

Sweat was flowing well by the end of the third go through :)

Partnered up and did three rounds with one person holding the pads whilst the other did an attack combination. Like we did on saturday it was up to the attacker when they went for it and you we were concentrating on each set being consistently strong.

Still in pairs, we moved on to 5 sets of five Mawashi geri (off each leg) each set the pads were moved up an inch or two until the kick lost power.

Kata next: White, Blue, Yellow X 2 & Green X2

Padded up, got into threes and did some sparring drills. One person "On" and the other two taking it inturns to attack.

Finished off with 2 minutes of sprint for 6 seconds rest for 9.

Thursday, Enshin Training

It should be Ros's write up but due to a) going for a beer after training and b) Ros being very busy at work I'm gonna do it....

Started off with a full Enshin warm up then it was Various(mostly 30 but some were 10 and some were 60(I think)) reps of all the Kihon strikes, blocks and kicks. My legs felt super heavy last night so I wasn't liking my kicks much :(

Next we partnered up and did minute rounds of....

Move to the outside shoulder, grab and do Jodan mawashi geri.

Hiki Mawashi and Hiza geri.

Then the pads came out and we did 2 minute rounds working on the first four moves of our grade kata against an opponent.

Now I know there was something else we did at this point but I can't for the life of me remember what it was...

Got into three's, one person held the pads whilst the other pair took it in turns to do burpee, left mawashi geri, right mawashi geri

There was a bit of a wager occured at this point, MJH and Wilk tried to do 78 sets of the above between them(in two minutes), had they succeeded Gary would have been running round Loughborough naked

Next we did Green belt kata

Partnered up again and did 20 reps of...

Partner sits on the floor, your feet are under their thighs and they hold onto you behind the calfs (Calves?), you sit down, do a sit up and then stand up again.

Partner holds you in a wheel barrow position and you do press-ups

Seven of us stayed behind and did some sparring. Ros got me with a cracking Hiki mawashi, Hiza geri, Mawashi geri combo:)

And then we went to the pub.......

Saturday, Enshin Training

I have the honour of doing the write up again today as Ros has dropped me off at home so she can go into the lab and continue with the trial stuff she'd doing for work.

Normal Rossy write ups will resume next week.

Being a man of his word, Gary told us it was goinf to be a F******** Horrible one today and it was:eek:

We started off with 20 minutes on the bags but with a difference. Normally we do varying amounts of time doing.....

Close range: Punches/Elbows/Knees
Long range : Kicks
Excercise : Situps or cross over situps
Max 5 : 5 Kicks of one leg
Moving: Moving round the gym practising sabaki movement

But today was .......

Close range: Press Ups(5 or 3 or 2) then Punches/Elbows/Knees
Long range : Squats X 3 then Kicks
Excercise : Cross over situps
Max 5 : 5 Kicks of each leg
Moving :Grab the nearest person to you and try and pull them round the gym also attempting to take them over

By the end my punches were barely moving the bag(although the shovel hook still seemed to be effective :))

Gary offered anyone who could take their opponent down in the last 4 minutes the option to have a rest and not complete the remaining time. Guess what? Ros managed to take me over! Guess what else? She refused the rest and carried on with the rest of us:)

Next we moved onto defence and takedowns, Ros was on first and the other three of us took it inturns to attack. She got me, again, with her Hiki mawasi, hiza geri, mawashi geri. This time taking a chunk of skin out of my Eyebrow(ok that may be a slight exageration, but there was blood, everyone saw it;) )

Time flew by again and the next thing we knew the MMA guys were there and warming up for their class so we had to call it a day. But not before Gary lined us up for a Tabata(and then told us he was only joking).

Ros wanted me to say that she wasn't winking at you all class Gary, It was her contact lens palying up.

GJEC

Cracking effort from all four of you!

I swapped the 'Moving round the gym practising sabaki movement' for 'Grab the nearest person to you and try and pull them over' as last time I noticed people taking a breather and dropping their hands.

I don't mind breathers, but not if they lead to bad habits. The pulling around is ****ing horrible and really sucks the energy out of you. The push ups/squats before striking is OK in theory but in practise took too long.

Twenty minutes is enough IMO. (But the tape lasts for 40 if you're having too much fun)

The second part went really well, and if we can tidy up some of the controlled strikes after the takedowns we're moving towards consistent three point scores instead of single points. V Good!

I'm trying to encourage a positive recollection of sessions rather than writing down what went wrong. Don't beat yourselves up over the odd thing and don't let self-talk be your enemy. None of us like negative criticism from others so it makes no sense doing it to ourselves!!

Obviously we shouldn't ignore glaring mistakes and must take steps to correct them, but let's focus on and remember what works well. That breeds confidence.

The idea of Saturdays is to make them tough so the lazy ones stay away. That sounds elitist but with only an hour I can't be arsed coaxing people. Everyone who turns up has got to be up for it from the word go. You four are there regularly, so well done to all of you. I noticed a couple trying not to boff so you're definately pushing out of your comfort zone. That's where the growth is, mentally and physically.

Yeah - we've got a tight little group there. Others come and go as work/enthusiasm allows, but they now find themselves being practised ON instead of WITH. Rik drives up from London at breakneck speed - and Pawel comes from Gloucester at a more sensible pace - to attend. It's an 'open' class so any K4L members can jump in at any time.

PS Fred, You'll be there soon. Got something really special planned ;):D

Osu! Do you practice defense against hiki mawashi, Monty? Does Enshin allow standing elbow locks? I think the kyokushin kihon style shuto hizo uchi would work great against the arm grab portion of the hiki mawashi.

GJEC

Do you practice defense against hiki mawashi?

SOP is to twist through slightly faster than being pulled. A skill that works well in practise but is hard to pull off for real. I personally prefer to target the ribs on the side of the arm that hooks the neck, they are usually briefly exposed ...

Does Enshin allow standing elbow locks?

There's nothing in the rules to say no, but I fail to see an oportunity there to be honest. It's not a static position so once you're moving thinking about avoiding the incoming knee takes precedence.

I think the kyokushin kihon style shuto hizo uchi would work great against the arm grab portion of the hiki mawashi.

Having practised both styles I doubt it. Of course the relative skill of the grabber and defender is crucial, but I think the answer above applies. On my first trip to Denver I studied the Sabaki Method book on the plane and had a few tricks planned. I was still on the floor more often than a cleaners mop ... :)

As you will see if you check out Ros's write up the computer got her with it's mystery deleting problem and she's given up and gone for a shower.

I will step in and do the write up for her.

Warm up was in fighting stance doing.....

Front punch X 20 off each side then front & reverse X 20 off each side then Front & Reverse & Shovel X 20 off each side

Double block X 20 off each leg then double block & Gedan mawashi geri X 20 off each side then Double block & Mawashi geri & ushiro mawashi kake geri X 20 off each side.

Next was 2 minutes of sprinting up and down the dojo, that was particularly nasty :)

The pads came out and we did 30 seconds of hitting whatever the pad man gave you(but no grabs allowed). We moved between padmen and depending who you were in front you either had 2 X 30 seconds off and 30 seconds on :) or 30 seconds on 30 seconds off :(

We then partnered up and did 5 rounds of grabbing and pullling each other round one person was on for 30 seconds and had to do a shita zuki on the opponent to the count. On the last round I was partnered by Ros and I was glad I knew what was coming so I could tense, If she'd have got me by surprise I'd have been on the floor I reckon(more of which later).

Worked on the second half of our grade Kata against an opponent next, I was trying very hard to get power into my Mawashi geri when (for some reason) my supporting leg gave way/slipped/something and I ended up in a heap on the floor :-( My right hip is now hurting like a b*******!

Saturday, Enshin Training

Ros was working this morning:( so she deposited Gary and I at the Gym and then tootled off to work.

Just to wind her up a bit.... What a great session :D

There were three of us training, we started off with one person "ON" and they did 15 seconds of smashing the hell out of the punch bag whilst the others jogged up and down the dojo. each person had three goes in total on the bag.

Then we did the same but this time 30 seconds on the bag

Then we did the same again but 45 seconds on the bag!

Next was two people grabbing and counter grabbing then trying to pull each other round the dojo and take each other over. As soon as you took someone over they were replaced by the spare person. I did feel a bit for Hisa as he was so good at taking us over he was up for the majority of the 5 minutes.

The rest of the session was taken up with one person on with the other two taking it in turn to attack. We were concencentrating on taking the opponent over, turning them towards the "ref" and scoring 3 points. I'm not sure what is more tiring, being the defender or being the attacker and having to get up and down off the floor alot.

I got in trouble at the end with Mark as when asked if I found the bag work this morning worse than last weeks horribleness I said "No, this week was better" I later clarified to him that I found it better because at least this week you got a chance to breath when you were jogging up and down.

Got to the gym a bit before Ros (was going to spend 10 minutes smashing the hell out of the bag and pretending it was my boss but I forgot my bag gloves:(). Ended up just doing ten extra mins on the treadmill.

Then it was 10 mins on the cross trainer followed by one minute rounds of.....

Situps
Hit what the pad man gives you
Russian twists
Burpee/Right mawashi geri/Left mawashi geri

Spent some time working on defence and take downs(mainly the ones from last nights class)

Ros did green belt kata against an opponent and then we had to rush off(for reasons that are best not mentioned)

Ros was working again this week and managed to miss another nasty one;)

Started of with bag work, 15 seconds all out attack on the bag, 15 seconds holding the bag(whilst partner whacks it) & 15 seconds jogging repeated 3 times. Then the same but 30 seconds, then the same but 45 seconds:eek:

The work bits are HORRIBLE and the jogging bits are WONDERFUL(and the holding the bag is ok)

working in pairs we moved on to grabbing your opponent(one hand only) and pulling them round and trying to take them over. Not sure how long for but we did this 3 times. We then did similar but using the other hand as well to either grab(the same side) or push on the opposite side.

We then spent some time working on the hiza geri defence/counters and hiki mawashi defence/counters.

finished off with 1 person on and the other three taking it in turns to attack. In this instance the attackers were told to attack as soon as the person had dealt with the previous attack, keeping the person in the middle under pressure for the full 2 minutes.

Good effort!

The goal of coaching is to set targets that are ever so slightly out of reach, so only purposeful practise can get you closer.

That's how we improve, not by drifting along. We got that today, everyone was pushing hard. Well done!

Easy one tonight(see "Chamberlain English Dictionary")

Ros was Ill so didn't train tonight:(

Started off with Kata 3 X through each of White, Blue, Yellow & Green. I do believe I got all the way through Green belt twice out of the three times :D Woo Hoo!

Then 5 goes at a Kata of our choice against an opponent. I decided to alternate between Green and Yellow.

Got into groups of 3 or 4 and took it in turns to be "on" and face constant attacks from each of the others for 2 Minutes.

Finished off with

15 seconds all out attack on the pads and 30 seconds rest(or jogging) times 3
30 seconds all out atttack on the pads and 60 seconds rest times 3
45 seconds all out attack and 1 min 30 secs rest times 1(thankfully)

I'm feeling slightly better so decided I could training this morning.

We got to the Car park and it must have looked like Gary was on a day trip with a bunch of patients from Leicester Royal Infirmary, I was sniffling, Ros had a sore throat and Rik just looked like S**t.

Thankfully Gary had a technical session planned today:)

Spent the fist 20 Mins doing either White, Blue, Yellow or Green belt kata depending on which card was drawn from the pack of cards. If a Joker was drawn(which two were, what's the chances of that happening;)) then we did all four kata one after the other without a count.

We spent the rest of the session working on each kata against an oppponent(s)

Really enjoyed the session today, don't think I could have handled a "full on" one.

Started off with a quick warm up then lined up with the youngsters along the length of the dojo and the adults across the width then each group took it in turns sprint down the Dojo and lay on our front then get back up and sprint back. 5 goes at this. Then another 5 but laying on your back.

Then we did 20 reps of some of the basic strikes and blocks. Then 20 reps of most of the kihon kicks. Finished the basics with 100(I think, Ros says she lost count as well) Mawashi geris.

partnered up and did Mae geri into partners stomach then ushiro mawashi geri over their head(squatting). Then Mae geri, mawashi geri, ushiro mawashi geri. Then grab right side of partner and mawashi geri, grab left side and mawashi geri, grab right side and hook neck and hiza geri, grab left side and hook neck and hiza geri.

Kata next: White, blue, yellow and green

then green and yellow against an opponent.

Finished off with some sprint offs between the youngsters and the adults then a team burpee off starting with everyone doing 1 Burpee each in turn then 2 each then 3 each.

Stayed behind for the sparring, didn't do the normal stuff tonight. Each minute round was first 30 seconds with person 1 doing constant attack then second 30 seconds other person doing the same. This was really exhausting:eek:

Just to add: The idea being that "Relentless forward pressure" forces the 'receiver' to break offline and do sabaki.

If panting's a measure of intensity (steady there) that one hit the spot. :)

I've "Stolen" the write up today, Ros is busy getting ready to go out:)

Started off with the 20 Minute bag work alternating close range(Punch, elbow, knee), Long range (Kicks) Excercises(cross over situps) & Max (10 mawashis off the same leg) but this time instead of the moving round bit(in fighting stance) we had to grab a partner and pull them round the gym and try to take them over. This turns the 20 minutes from Nasty to down right Horrible:eek:

Next we did Kata witha difference, one person "on" and two attacker coming from different directions to the normal attack.

Last section was minute rounds with the first 30 seconds person A does constant straight line attacks on Person b then swap roles. as there was three of us we only did this for 2 minutes buy this time that was more than enough:)

Well, both Ros and I felt like poo today:( We got very little sleep because of us waking each other up, waking ourselves up and then the bloody cat decided he'd join in an wake us up as well. On top of that Loughborough area is under a bit of snow at the moment. So we weren't sure if we'd go training tonight.

Anyhoo, to cut a long story short we did go. Glad we got of our snotty arses and went but felt terrible throughout!

Started with a quick warm up then 20 reps of all kihon strikes and blocks, then 20 reps of all kihon kicks apart from Mawashi geri where we did 20 then we were told we weer going to do another 50 but I think the count ended at about 100!

Then we partnered up and did 2 minutes of mawashi geri/ushiro mawashi kake geri over squatting partners head

Got into grade groups and did kata against an opponent but the difference was that the moves all came in the same direction(unlike when your doing the kata properly)

Next we did 2 minutes of Burpee/Right Mawashi geri/Left mawashi geri. Thought I was going to vomit at one point. Good bit of advice from Wilks "If your going to vomit just do it then get on with the exercise" (paraphrasing slightly.

Did some sprints up and down the hall then padded up and did the sparring drills like monday but this time 30 seconds constant forward pressure.

Finished off with some press-ups, Hand clap press-ups, squats and jump squats.

As Ros is having her hair done, I'm on write ups duties again today :) I could have gone with her and sat in the hairdresser and use the baby laptop but they do play terrible music in there:(

it was a HORRIBLE one today, I'm still not feeling on top form. I had a good 5 minute coughing fit about 3am this morning, I even woke Ros up it was that violent!

Started off with bag work, in pairs one hold the bag the other goes all out with punches and kicks and elbows and anything really(although long range kicks don't tend to be used much) for 15 seconds, swap and other person does 15 seconds then last 15 seconds is grabbing your partner by the sleeve and pulling them round and trying to get them over. 3 goes each at this then 3 goers each at 30 second rounds then 3 goes each at 45 second rounds.

When we've done this before the last third of each round has been jogging round, obviously this was noted and duely removed for todays class.

Next came 1 minute(possibly) rounds of one person on and the other three taking it in turns to attack. We did this twice each. At one point the coughing monster paid me another visit, It was touch and go whether his friend the Vomit monster would also be attending but I managed to close the door before he got there;)

Next came kata against an opponent, Paul was there today which was great. Ros and I alternated between working with him and working with Rik.

In pairs again we did 30 seconds each of constant forward pressure whilst the defender tried to "break in" and perform a sabaki defence.

Finished off with a Tabata(ish) but without the 10 second rests between each thing. That just about put the horrible icing on the cake. I have to admit my sprints were not sprints:( Must have looked more like a drunk trying to walk home.

Saturday, Enshin Seminar

We warmed up by doing 20 reps of all the Enshin Kihon Blocks and strikes, Non Enshin-ka were told that if they were not used to the way we do the stirke or block to just do the nearest thing they do from their own style.

We then did 40 Mae keage and then 20 of the rest of the kihon kicks, apart from Mawashi geri where we did 50(10 gedan, 10 chudan, 10 jodan, 10 chudan & 10 gedan). Then Gary had us move so we were standing astride one of the lines on the floor and explained that we need to be getting the kicks through the centre line and to illustrate this we did the 50 reps again:eek:

The next section was done with a partner (we changed partners after each drill) and we were doing stuff like, grab partners arm and move off line then throw Jodan mawashi geri, swap sides and do again. First time we did it we did 10 each to the count, the next time we did as many as we could in a minute.

We then did similar with Hiki mawashi and Hiza geri, we then strung the two together and did Hiki mawashi, Hiza geri, Jodan mawashi geri. We then added a takedown on the end.

9 of us (I think it was nine) got a set of arm guards each and the rest got into three's facing us. First drill was front, reverse, shovel hook into the pads trying to move the pad man backwards across the hall. The pad men then held the pads for Mawashi geri whilst standing on 1 leg, the idea being to make the padman have to put the other leg down.

We amalgameted the two and did Front, reverse, shovel, Padman steps back and person does Mawashi geri.

Next we added the hiki mawashi/hiza geri in the middle so it went front, reverse, shovel, Hiki mawashi, hiza geri, mawashi geri.

Then, again, we added the takedown and finish on the end.

The pads went away and we got into three's and did minute rounds of one person on and the other 2 taking it inturns to attack first go through this the two attackers were trying to attack as soon as thre other person was done(and the defender was trying to use the first attacker as a barrier between them and the second attacker). The second time through the intensity was increased as the second attacker was trying to get behind the defender and tap them on the back at the same time as the first attacker was attacking.

Finished off with a Tabata of alternating sprints and excercise with the excercises being Press-up, X - Situps, 180 Jumpo squats and , you guessed it, Burpees:)

It was an excellent afternoon and I'm looking forward to the next installment:)

Thanks Monty :)

Was it me or did it go really quickly?

or

Did Ros hobble into the office and move the clock forward at twice the usual rate?

This one was a very basic 'starter kit' so on following ones returning victims understand the 'blind spot' and pulling off balance etc. If I can get the TKD centre at the University next time we'll be upping the intensity and taking down more a la Saturday class.

:)

Yes, it certainly flew by.

I did chuckle to myself when you caught someone looking at the clock :)

Thanks Fred

It just adds a bit more pressure and incentive to turn the attacker and keep more awareness, rather than getting tunnel vision and just focussing on the one in front.

Monday, Enshin Training

Gary is off on his Jolly down to London so Sensei Paul was in charge tonight.

We started of with a quick warm up.

The majority of the class was kata but done very differently, in line facing front we did the first four moves of White, blue & green belt kata.

Then we got with partners and got a set of arm guards bettween us and did moves 6 & 7 of white, blue, yellow and green belt kata

Then we did moves 8 & 9 (and 10) of white, blue, yellow & green.

The mats were out tonight so we did some rolls and stuff(or falls in my case:()

Ended up with a rolling/burpee race :)

Thursday, Enshin Training

Started off with a Card based warm up, jogging round the dojo then doing x amount of exercises depending on what card is drawn. Tonights menu was Press-ups, Sit-ups, Jump squats and Burpees. Remarkably both Jokers(5 of each exercise) managed to get drawn.

Next came the Kihon, 10 reps of every technique apart from Mawashi geri which we ended up doing about 110 of:eek:

I was hoping that Ros could see what my techniques were looking like as I was trying to relax more on my mawashis but she couldn't see me as there was a Wilk in the way:)

Did some punching drills from fighting stance: Front, Reverse, Uppercut.

The pads came out and we did Mae geri, slap padmans arm out of the way then mawashi geri off the other leg.

Next was a fun drill, you close your eyes and the pad man moves round you then pushes you and puts the pads up for a technique, you open your eyes and hit what you see.

Kata time, White, Yellow, Blue & Green to the count and no count.

Good steady session tonight:)

What are the chances of that happening?

In Gary's deck, its apparently about 100% :D

I think he needs a new deck. Sounds like he's only got about a dozen cards left in that one. :D

They always appear as I go through the whole deck. Only 1 - 5's though if it's just an active warm-up.

Hoping you and Roz have a great time in the frozen North! Regards to Senshido, Wullie and the rest of you that make it up ...

Satruday, Oban Trip and Training

Some pictures of the trip up from Glasgow and some taken by Ros at the Oban Dojo can be found here.

http://cid-17803179fb37c144.photos.live.com/browse.aspx/Oban

It was a good drive up to Oban from Glasgow, beautiful scenery and the roads were 98% OK (put's the english idea of how to cope with cold weather to shame).

Due to Senshido having some Issues getting into Oban(due to the snow) there were only 5 of us training, the first hour we were in pairs with a kick shield each and we took it in turns practising various techniques. Thanks to all the Oban Dojo guys, you were all very friendly and helpful.

I mentioned the promotion test on Monday and so they asked If I wanted to go through my Kata, I took the oportunity and did White, Blue & Yellow all no-count.

Wullie asked if I could show him some of the take downs we do in Enshin so i spent some time demoing the takedown from the first three Kata and some other ones that we do.

We finished off with Wullie showing us some SP stuff(including some pretty nasty stuff), I particularly liked the choke :) (When it wasn't being applied to me that is:))

Now we're having a little rest before we wander down to the hotel bar to meet up with Senshido, Wullie, Kanku etc:)

Monday, 3rd Kyu promotion test

Ros has written the test up on her log(from the spectators point of view), I don't think she did the last three minutes of VB justice. It wasn't like Gary said we're gonna do three minutes of Burpees, He simply said we're gonna do Burpees, If you're not testing you can drop out after the first Minute:eek:

It was mentally horrible because we had no idea of how long we'd be expected to do :(
