Osu,
I had the priviledge to drive down to Dents Lair, and meet him and Godai today. Mondays are very rough with business so I was late and they had already been training by the time my big butt got there.
I was welcomed with smiling eyes and a hardy Osu! I know they were looking to wind up and get moving but took extra time to give me a few whacks at the pads. Considering rigormortis has set in from 5 days of different training, and went in cold, I left with the notion that I want to go back ASAP!!
Thinking about the experience, knowledge and wisdom that they both could share as I was driving home had me smiling. Well that is until I called into the office for my messeges (lots of expletetives!!!). Of course this big body needed fuel as well. The banana and rotten lettuce wrap wore off quickly, so it was NJ Turnpike Roy Rogers on the way back up north.
Dent is a gracious host and is very welcoming, which just capped it for me because I was already excited to go and meet these guys. He is a physically solid individual that would handle the most powerful of folks just as handily.
Godai has a glimmer in his eye that is just as welcoming and reflects years of logic and wisdom. Nice lightening kicks and put combinations together effortlessly and impressively.
I am humbled and honored to have had this opportunity and look forward to meeting more of you in the very near future. Next time I will have one of my dogis' and not MC HAMMER sweats, that were way toooo big hahaha!!
Dent, I thank you for inviting me down and I look forward to the next time. Your daughter is adorable, and was absolutley fantastic, while I was there soooo cute and not a whimper!!
You guys are TOP NOTCH!!!

I hate I missed you! I heard you had some business to attend to of some sort or another. I look forward to meeting up with you soon.
I missed the bulk of the work out and when I did hit the floor, I probably should have taken some Tylenols before hand and warmed up a tad. But what time I had was great, and I could see the brains working on both Dent and Godai as they watched what I provided. Not much power and fatigued right off, but I loved the opprtunity just the same.

I was really looking forward to training with the East Coast crew. I had the camera in my gear bag waiting by the door. Today, just didn't work out for me.

Sounds great big guy! I'd love to meet up with you guys and train sometime. One day it will happen, I'm sure of it :)
So much for the theory that Dent is an artificial intelligence posting program.

I'll be over there in a month now. :)

Osu!
Many thanks to Godai and JCarmello for the inspiring visit! Both took time out from busy schedules to come out to Middle-of-Nowhere, New Jersey. Meguro wanted to come, but an unexpected emergency kept him away this time. I know he'll be out soon, and we'll train together again.
Godai gave it stick for the best part of three hours, and I must tell you all that he is in good shape, so don't take out any life insurance policies on him just yet! (I know he'll argue with me on that, but only because he has set his personal bar so high.) We started off with 4 minute rounds on the heavy bags (160-200 lbs), and in addition to all the striking, he was practicing level changes, shoots and sprawls, with additional ab-work and push ups during the 30 seconds breaks between rounds.
After that we moved onto a variety of striking concepts and application thereof. Being a rangy fighter, his method for power delivery is different than my own, but it's good to see other methods, especially when backed up with practical examples on people and pads.
As we both share a common interest in Jack Dempsey and his methodology, it was great to see another interpretation of the same material. That alone was an example of why we can't just practice from books or videos. Practical knowledge must be tested, shared and tested again.
Additional training covered clinch, clinch recovery and escape from the ground with the use of counterstriking. We didn't get in too deep on these, as time was flying by.
JCarmello made it for the last hour of the day, and was raring to go. And by raring, he did jump in after multiple days of training, all without more than a twist here and there. We rounded out that last hour with Mantis and Thai pads. I feel comfortable that there was enough sweat to justify our training, even if we did have some pretty lively discussion from time to time. :D
I hope that both these gentlemen can find their way back to MoN, NJ sooner rather than later, and I hope that you, gentle reader, can join us too. :)

I had a great time although I wish I were able to do a little more. Dent is impressive in his skill and knowledge. Jcarmello is really a great guy and eager to learn. However buildings large enough to hold him may be hard to find :D
As Dent mentioned we "touched" on clinching and hitting the ground but it wasn't a whole lot . I think I've mentioned in another post somewhere that grappling isn't my thing. I just want to get back up or untied from a clinch and hit again...striking is my thing and what I do at MMA. So we covered some of that. As I told Dent, he is too strong for me and I wouldn't choose to clinch with him and my strategy would involve avoiding that. Most of our day was spent striking, training striking/kicking and trading notes. The pad work was the icing on the cake yesterday. There is a lot going on in my head and it would take more than the 3 hours for me to explain it and have it make sense :D I gave Dent a few half ass examples yesterday. Nothing monumental....things he is already aware of. Just twists and tweaks that I like to work for "myself."

Yesterday I was really hoping meguro showed up, I truly looked forward to meeting him. Today however I'm almost glad he didn't (no offense meguro:)).
What I mean is that I don't think I could have stood being outgunned by an added guy. :D
Not my conditioning nor my ego. I think its finally sinking in that I am moving backwards no matter how hard I try. I've lost in all areas and yesterday was a real wake up call. Last night Dent went to train as usual. I couldn't. I'm still recovering. Actually I felt this way two weeks ago when I did the pad work after my regular training (I wrote it up in my journal) after not doing pad work in 6-7 months. I mean, c' mon...we worked hard yesterday but in the grand scheme of things and the usual trainings we really didn't do a "regular" session. It was longer than I have been training but I thought I could manage a full session if ever I had to.
This is a strange new world for me and time for more self reflection and path adjustment. I really have to re-think things because in a SD situation I just ain't the guy I was a few months ago. I really question my ability now. My strength is nill too.
I'm ok with it.....just thinking is all. I have to have the correct info otherwise I'll just be fooling myself. After all at MMA sometimes its easy to still feel good because I'm not fighting. New guys don't know anything about me other than things they may have heard from older members and they are leery or fearful just from lack of experience. Guys who have been around awhile know where I was before and either understand, or are still respectful. None of this helps my position because it never tests me and it leaves me feeling like I can still do it. Yesterday was great. It was different somehow and educational for my mind. I've been dealt a new body. I now have to try and match/sync the brain to it :)
Meguro....stay away from me you animal!!!!:D
great write up and nice picture! Dent, I can make a trip from CT to MoN. I just need to get coverage for classes (unless it's a Sunday)

Osu! Ha! You flatter me, Godai, but I really missed out, on finally meeting you and jcarmello. Of course, it is always a great privilege to trade punches and war stories with Dent.
I don't think you are moving backwards. These few months - let's be honest it's only been a few months - you are still getting to know the size of the obstacle put before you. Now you are too close to it to appreciate it's immensity, like an ant feeling its way around a rock that was dropped in its path. Eventually, you'll get past it.

A couple of quick adds,
I walked into Dents dojo and saw that he and Godai were already sweating and were wearing their gloves!. So I knew they were having a go and I wondered if I was MEAT!! Luckily they spared me!
As for Godai, I saw a man sweating with bright eyes who had been at it for some time before I got there. Then I watched as he through a few kicks to stay warm while we were bull sheeting. Then I got to witness his combinations and stance in action as he and Dent were working on the combo. There is no doubt in my mind that this man is an absolute ANIMAL!!!!
He had a "heart attack" recently and was getting it on. Regardless of excuses, I was winded almost immediately and would have needed another half hour to set a pace for myself. Godai "THAT IS IN FRICKEN CREDIBLE!"
You are an inspiration to me and so many more of us here!!! OSU!!
Now, for the mystery part! We went to the upper area of the dojo and the first thing I noticed were "Body sized" holes in the wall... There are quite a few little digs about Dent having to handle things the Jersey way, but when you see those "Body size" caverns..........you kind of wonder.......

Dent, you better get those sealed and patched before the bodies start to smell. JC, were they plumber-sized holes? You can tell if there was crack showing near the butt.

Well, I appreciate the comments however I know me better than you :D I am training to be a fighter and that is a mistake. I just need to train to stay healthy and be in good shape. The other stuff is spitting into the wind :)
Anyway no matter! All is well. And now that I got my visit in with Dent and the J man, I fulfilled my last obligation as far as training and anything in the realm of teaching goes. Now I can get on with just being a student. :)

Well just a little plug for Dent's dojo. I loved that place. It was truly my kind of training facility. It was raw, had everything you need, separate training areas (downstairs had striking , bags and makiwara etc, and upstairs was a matted room with weights and KB's and hojo undo). IMO the perfect training facility. All of the essentials and none of the prettiness. I was very impressed by the bag room. Excellent use of the space. My one word for Dents' is perfect. (is that proper punctuation?)

It is an awesome place! He has something for everyone. It is truly a martial artists heaven!! I wanted to act like a little kid and start jumping around from item to item, trying everything out. Its like downstairs is the "Body/Performance Shop" and upstairs dojo is the "Drag Strip" to prove your tuning and work! I walked away with a lot of ideas.
