Whats your deepest fear? - my fav saying.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

I feel motivated to do something now!!!!! o wait i'm at work it will have to wait till later. :)

It makes llittle sense

When the amygdala registers fear it runs it by the hippocampus to decide from previous experiences if we should run, fight or freeze until the danger is past.

If we have no experience of being powerful beyond measure it won't terrify us, it's more likely to get us aroused ...

You are a child of ELVIS...

We were born to make manifest the glory of ELVIS...

Hows that? :)

So you both never had an experience where you were worried about it because you thought you might fail only to find out you are actually quite good at what you do or did?? i find that hard to believe. :)

For instance at random: Your Driving test. you must all drive but i bet before passed you went in to the test centre thinking you might fail?

That's the other way round. It's natural to feel tense before challenges we're not sure we can pull off, but not natural to dread being capable.

(...) not natural to dread being capable.

Yet it happens all the time.
The fear of setting oneself outside of a group, of standing out is very powerful.
The fear of one's own power is also overwhelming at times.

I don't see any trace of religion in EPKing statement; God is not religion. :)

Great quote EPKing!

How contrary you are, Fred (unlike me!:D) - belief in god is religion (and the phrase 'we were born to manifest the glory of god' surely wouldn't be any motivation to an atheist).

Can someone share an instance where they have been afraid of doing something in case they were too good/powerful/capable? Fred, I agree that the fear of setting oneself outside of a group, can be a powerful fear but I don't think it's a fear of being powerful.

I just use it as a movational saying and have converted it to my own saying which is "There is nothing big to be gained by playing small"

I suppose if I got to sleep with Natalie Imbruglia I'd have to keep things sensible, you know, just in case she kept pestering me for another go. :);)

Other to that - NO.

Wouldn't have a framed pic of her on the dojo wall by any chance? :D

Perhaps the wording "afraid of being powerful" is a touch misleading. I can think of instances where in competition I pulled myself back so as not to outshine someone else - like I was putting a higher value on preserving the other person's feelings than on my own achievement. Its not at all rational, but it does happen. It probably happens more with certain personality types vs others. By nature I tend to try to preserve other people's feelings and keep harmony in whatever situation I'm in. I don't know why, that's just how I'm wired. Sometimes its to my own detriment, but on the other hand that tendency has served me well in many situations. I've noticed though that in my karate training I've for the most part learned to work around that tendency. I don't know - its wierd...

Winning is great, winning quickly is better. I understand the feeling Sandman but I think in competition you can hurt people's feelings more if they know you're not really trying.

You are absolutely right Gary - like I said, there's no logic to it, but it's there. Thankfully I'm learning when NOT to worry about the other guy's feelings - karate seems to help me in that area.

Osu!

I think that Karateka are more likely to feel empowered anyway. They are strong individuals, particularly those in full contact training.
