I'm not the smartest guy in the world but like to think I have a certain amount of 'common sense'.
I have a 50 man coming up in December I'm prepping for. I've talked to Senshido how he prepared for his 100 man and realized I need some 'muscle armor'. Meaning, I have been going to the gym on a regular basis putting in some serious work. I've recently gained almost 6 pounds and this isn't fat. I'm not cutting weight and I imagine some of my fat will start to melt off if it hasn't yet.
I'll outline some of my work outs and start off by saying I work the lower part (legs) at the gym one day, arms and chest, and back (deltoids, trapezius, etc.). Since I can no longer run due to impact I do lots of stationary cycle work which also gave me justification to purchase an ipod touch :).
Last night I started out with about 45 minutes on the stationary bike.
Then I went to the incline leg press with 250 pounds starting with 20 reps. Then I added 50 pounds and stayed there. 15 reps for my next set. 12 reps for my next set. 10 for my final and took the 50 extra pounds off going back to 250 doing a 'cool down' of 10 reps.
I generally wait a minute to two minutes between each set, sometimes upwards of three. The goal here is for 'muscle failure'. To really feel it in my legs, to get a 'pump'.
Next I do calf raises starting at 90 pounds doing 18 reps. I am right now keeping it at 90 but next week when I work out legs like this I'm upping it 25 pounds. I do four more sets going down 2 reps each set.
Next is leg curl starting with 85 pounds doing 18 reps. I go up to 95 and stay here doing four more sets going down 2 reps each time.
I finish this off with 20 more minutes on the bike before I leave followed with some crunches on the 'ab board' with 45 pounds. This varies depending on how I'm feeling but I do this at the end of every work out.
My diet isn't cutting on calories by any means but a focus on eating quality calories. I'm trying to build muscle mass and so far I'm succeeding at that. I'm making sure my cardio work is done so I don't gain a bunch of mass that slows me down! Around mid November or so I plan on cutting down a bit on size depending on the mass I gain.
To keep it simple I'm trying to build huge thighs, calf muscles, chest, forearms, and increase tricep. I'm not worried about my biceps but sure that'll increase or at least get more toned.
Reason for this is I'm sure I'm going to get tired and drop my hands a little bit, especially at the 30 man mark so I want my chest big...same goes for avoiding and blocking gedan mawashi geri. I want to make sure my thighs are padded more then well enough.
Besides this I worked on all the pinan and kanku dai kata last night in my back yard.
Since I"m going on a salmon fishing trip this weekend I'm making it a point to go to the gym tonight and work on my back with the same stationary cycle and ab work out at the end.
I am making it a point to not work the same muscle groups more then once a week when lifting weights because I'm working to the point of really feeling that 'lactic' acid or 'muscle failure' feeling..getting a solid 'pump' feeling. At first I must admit I was doing some of the same weight lifting routines done more then once a week but after a lot of reading have found out that's not wise, your muscles need to recover!
I make sure as soon as I get home from lifting weights I have whey protein mixed with a scoop of glutamine to fuel recovery of my muslces! I'm not huge into supplements but this really seems to help recovery of muscles.
Also very important to keep up on stretching, stretching, and more stretching when gaining mass.
I'll get more in detail about this as time progresses. The training will ramp up more in a few weeks!

Wow, amazing! 50 men kumite, how did you end up in that gig? Hard for a lowly brown-belt such as I to give advice for prepping to something like this, but I'll try anyway — please don't take it the wrong way. :)

Why not practice on keeping your hands up? Maybe you could try to practice shadow-boxing while holding weights, to get that lactic acid pumping, while focusing on keeping those hands to your chin.
Also, I don't see any kumite or condition practice. Muscles are all well and good, but will only take you so far. My memory is a bit fuzzy, but I believe I read that Glaube Feitosa did 50 rounds once every week, to prepare for his 100-men-kumite.
Again, I'm sure you have this well sorted out already, I just wanted to share my thoughts. Keep us posted, and ganbatte!

I'm pretty good at keeping my hands up but I'm sure I'll reach a 'point' where it will get hard to. We'll see how this all goes.
Best case scenario is that I train so well leading up to this that it won't be that hard LOL! Not holding my breath on that, I'm imagining it to be difficult.
I got into the 50 man due to agreeing to do a sandan test under Senshido this December. If all goes well, Fred and Gary will be there, too.
Thanks for all the thoughts, everybody. The rules for the 50 man as I understand them are minute rounds with a short water break after every 10. Knockdown/kyokushin rules as I understand them.
Right now, I'm doing mostly shadow boxing and bag work plus kata. September I'm ramping this work out up a lot more which is only a few weeks away.
I have a long time student and friend that recently tore his achilles tendon but should be able to start training again in October. Already told him he's needed to hold pads with me, etc. Probably doing a baseball bat(s) as part of a demo in October/November, too.
Of course there will be photos/video. I'll have some photos of the haggis I'll be eating in Scotland, too! mmmm mmmmmm

Cool! I look forward to following your training for the 50 man kumite!
If your injury precludes running, does it also prevent you from weight bearing exercises as well (squat, deadlift, military press)? Is that why you're going with leg press and leg curls? If not, maybe you can incorporate sandbag carries (bear hug a sea/duffel bag and walk) in your routine. I'm completely with Nix on the conditioning, and carrying a sandbag when you are exhausted will train you to keep your hands up and core tight. Lot's of gundam sparring won't go astray either.

I was actually considering deadlifts for grip tonight! :D Of course shrugs and will definitely take the advice of the sandbag carries, thank you! I did military press a couple of nights ago so will wait for next week for that. I'm now trying to actually have a set routine of chest/arms, legs, back but before was mixing it up due to being absent minded and impatient at the gym waiting for people to stop posing so I can use the equipment (bit of a rant of mine).
I used to love squats but I like to sometimes push myself and even with a weight belt don't like the feel of it on my lower back even when using proper form.
I have all sorts of new gear en route to incorporate gundam sparring.
If anybody is ever in pierce county area of WA (Tacoma/lakewood) and wants to train please contact me :).

Dent's is pending some much needed emergency dental work which I see a dentist 7 am tomorrow for. This past weekend I had my front front left tooth come apart on me. I'm fortunately in no pain for the time being but have a nice 'gap' and look like a hillbilly temporarily. I'm sure if I took a decent hit even with a mouth guard that it might not turn out pretty.
Before this happened I had some mysterious 'warts' which I've had before years ago from BJJ that I had to have remove except these were different. I was afraid of a possible cyst.
I kept this under wraps but only told Dent and Bob about it. The 'wart' scare is over but now have to get this tooth fixed. I didn't want to pay $1200-2k plus out of pocket and am trying to get the VA to fix it free to me...now time to shop for some decent dental insurance. I might as well sleep with jolly ranchers and a couple table spoons full of sugar in my mouth every night with how bad my teeth are instead of brushing, flossing, and mouthwash. Sorry, a bit of a rant, have had a lot of dental work done the last few years.
On a side note if anybody knows of any decent private dental insurance here in the US please send me a pm!

Osu,
Just a repost of an excerpt from David Cook's book ...
Preparing for the Black Belt
When preparing for the black belt or for those who are about to fight in a Knockdown tournament, or perform such demanding task such as 30, 40 or 50 man Kumite, the following program performed three times a week on the heavy bag or focus pads will give excellent results.
Start off with 4 or 5 rounds of skipping, followed by 4 or 5 rounds of shadow boxing (this is a very good exercise, it makes you use your brain), each round is 2 minutes long, with 1 minute of rest between each round. Thereafter do some stretching and loosening up exercises before starting with bag/pad work.
The number of rounds on the bag should vary depending if you are training for the fun of it, or if you are training to build up stamina. Between 5 and 10 rounds is sufficient though.
When you feel that you are getting fitter, increase the pace instead of the number of rounds. When you want to obtain maximum fitness, push yourself to hit as hard and fast as you can for the last 30 seconds of each round. You can also do this with the skipping and the shadow boxing. Finish off with push-ups, sit-ups and squats followed by some light stretching and loosening exercises.
This is, of course, a very advanced program. One should gradually build up to such a program. Be careful not to overtrain though, because apart from these workouts there is one's regular Karate training to be taken into consideration. It is advisable to have at least one day's complete rest from training each week. The body needs time to recover and build up, otherwise there is a risk of wearing yourself out.

I imagine so or at the very least some pictures. Sorry, I'd try to record some footage but think my hands will be a little busy with other things ;).
The last couple of days I came down with a slight flu but didn't quit training.
I have been going through every kata I need to for the test in my back yard since the weather is somewhat decent here in western WA state for the time being.
Besides that a minimum of an hour of cardio on stationary bikes is my new minimum standard, every day. I was sometimes only doing about 40 minutes.
I noticed even though I've been eating healthier I've put on some weight so I'm going to focus a bit on 'slimming down' the next few weeks. Which means I'll somewhat count my calories and reduce the intake, eating 1800 a day, seeing if that does the job, if not, I may go as low as 1500 but I hate going any lower then that (I have done 1200 in the past). My strength right now is better then I can remember it being in a few years but still not at my goal, yet.
This is the weight lifting regimen I was basing a lot of my program on: http://www.muscleandfitness.com/summer_workout_routine/training/235?page=2
Except I believe in more cardio being needed for my goals that I have in mind. My PT friend swears this is a good program and he seems to know his stuff.
Besides that I'm going to probably get a lot of my kumite in on Saturdays at 'Seattle''s dojo in *drum roll*, Seattle. I have one brown belt student that I'm still in contact with but he ripped his acchiles tendon recently and probably cannot train again until some time in October. Who knows, maybe I'll be surprised and get some students at the new dojo that have a lot of experience but I'm not counting on it. Not to be negative, just not much knockdown karate in WA state.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it to Bob's summer camp and for training with Dent this week :( I had some 'emergency dental' work done on my top left tooth (about a third or more chipped off) and was told that's only temporary. I'm waiting on some type of letter/certificate so I can get that permanently fixed and other teeth worked on..joy. I'm being cautious because I'm now missing so much of that tooth and don't want to risk losing the rest of it. It was a tough decision and I was hoping to get it fixed NLT yesterday. Moral of the story is to keep up on your dental work, I suppose.
Any other suggestions?
I'm also rigging up a sand bag from an old swing post in the back yard of my house filled with marbles :)

Ah, I almost wasn't going to post this but am thinking after this is all over I'm going to post more of a 'guide' of what to do and not to do.
I'm going to be honest, here. A few nights ago I actually started having some doubt run through my head about this. I didn't let it get me down, I woke up the next morning a bit ticked off at me thinking that way and trained.
This isn't the first time in my life I have had some doubts but I have overcame those doubts. In a weird way I think it helps me because it motivates me to really 'dig in' and try.
I think to have some doubt or fear is only natural. This may sound a bit corny but in the past what I have done is to say positive things out loud to myself.
For any here with military experience that went through airborne/jump training, you can't tell me you never had any doubts. I remember staring at this 250 foot jump tower every day and joked nervously with my friends that knowing my luck something will happen and I'll get stuck up there. Sure enough, I did! Somebody went up the same time as me and undid the safety so there I am for at least 10 minutes dangling around at around 200 feet looking over most of Fort Benning, GA scared out of my mind. However, I stayed strong and told myself to look straight ahead and not to look down at the ground.
I'm not ashamed of what I fear or have doubts about but I'm not going to sit down and quit, neither.

When I first started this I was a bit more concerned about everything but the kumite but that concern now seems like it was silly.

Good news and bad news..
First I'll go forward with the bad news. Due to problems with the building owner changing our agreement more then once I'm going to look for a new location. I'd like to get into it more but it angers me and it even gets a little strange but I'll leave it at that. I still have my website up and will be approaching the college where I start in a few days about starting a kyokushin club there.
Good news is my strength and cardio seems to be getting better. I have lost even more weight int he past week and have received comments by people that have noticed. I am now 16 pounds lighter then I was a couple of months ago so I plan on hopefully keeping it up. I don't want to lose much more but do want to be leaner and am happy I lost the 7 pounds I put on when I first started lifting and eating lots of protein. While I didn't put on fat I'm not trying to weigh 250+ pounds when I'm only around 5'10.5" which I'm sure would have happened if I kept on that food plan (have to throw in that half inch ;)).
Today I had an early morning work out of an hour on the stationary followed with stretching.
Did full and side body planks. Then went on the 'ab machine' which is just an sit up board that you can put weights on. I put 45 pounds on and did 3 sets of 20 which may not be a lot to some but is for me right now. My abs are still a bit sore from that.
Later on my work out was kata, pad work, and just some shadow boxing. I spent around an hour on kata and an hour on pad work. My old student is healing up now and can hold pads for me. I must admit I threw up about half way through pad work. Which isn't a bad thing, I have done the same thing even when in great shape LOL.
Great news is I have found a great Thai Thaiboxing champion that has won the S-1 a few times that happened to just start teaching in my area. I'm going to be checking him out soon!
Tomorrow morning I plan on hitting the weights hard. Slight bad news is my left shoulder is bugging me a little bit but this is a reoccurring injury of mine and only seems to hamper me doing lots of pushups. It's not something that typically stops me from training and the recent change to crappy weather here in WA probably has triggered it. A few years ago on a field exercise a tree that was 'taken down' by me while I was in the Army happened to fall on this shoulder. By some miracle I was still standing and it bounced off of my left shoulder and I was on some nice pain killers later that night...Anyway, such is life, older we knuckleheads get the more reoccurring injuries we have.
I'll try to update this more often but have been so absent minded lately with dentists, college, trying to make my dojo work, and my own training.

Shoulder actually feels a little better today. I swear it's the change to 'crappy weather' mode here in WA state that triggered it.
Did some burpees, butterfly crunches, triangle push ups, and kata this morning. Going to finally get something to eat today and hit the gym to lift some weights in a few hours :D.
I don't know what it is and I'm not complaining but my appetite has gone down over the last few weeks. I feel full faster and just don't want to eat as much as I was. Not sick or anything and not complaining LOL.
Haven't had any beer for over a month now, too :O Don't think I have a problem with drinking just don't feel the need for it right now. Trust me, I will need my 'medicine' on a certain night when I'm in Scotland ;)

I agree with the others - the landlady might have been a source of constant frustration for you!
What is crappy weather in WA like?
Grey and rainy for about 4-6 months with few sunny days. However, I came back here this past summer and it was really nice most of the summer which surprised me but I haven't spent a summer in WA for some years so maybe it's the new 'normal'.
If somebody likes fall, cold, and wet weather western WA is the place for them but I'm not a big fan. However, we have great places to camp and hike with some pretty good fishing. It's definitely a 'love hate' relationship for me.
To summarize the 'landlady' wrong doings. She told me there were a lot of students signed up, investors wanting to invest which I wasn't asking for, her thinking she could come up with what I charge to students, asking my marital status letting me know she was recently single and much more all within the last few weeks. Icing on the cake was me asking about the 20 students she told me were signed up and her acting like she never said that. Oh, and the location with the hours were too early for most students with a '9 to 5' job.
Definitely a new learning experience when I thought I saw it all.
I think in a few years I can start charging would be dojo owners advice for what not to do from my experience of seeing many dojo close :D.

Left shoulder is bugging me off and on. It is reoccuring but going to take at least a day off today from using my left arm with any power. Going to just focus on a few hours of cardio on the stationary bike and elyptical machine.
A few days ago it bugged me a little and felt fine the next day but after working out on it felt worst then before. Not really worried about it but going to let my Doctor know about it this week because it never really got taken care of in the first place. Maybe some accupuncture on it will help. Right now all it really prevents me from doing is a lot of push ups and certain heavy weight exercises. I can still punch with the arm but not sure if that's preventing it from healing, hmmm... Good news is my shoulder feels fine, bad news is my lower right back (SI joint area) has been killing me now. I didn't write about this earlier because i was hoping it would go away but now admitting to the pain.
I haven't had this effect me in about 10 months to a year. I had to get a surgical injection into it last time and was getting cortisone shots about every other week for months. Crossing fingers this isn't as bad but it's killing me right now.
I think it has to do with the 'colder weather' and my pelvic injury or it's one heck of a coincidence. May be moving sooner than I thought to a place that has year round sun shine.
I may go to the ER room for this, grrr.
I'll update with what I hear from the medical professionals, ASAP.

I was talking to milkman about this recently...got on the scale today and weighed 7 pounds less than I did 48 hours ago. No idea why, because I didn't do anything crazy to cut weight. I for some reason thought I might be maybe 2-3 pounds lighter but 7 surprised me. If i have some more crazy rapid weight loss I'll call my doctor again...joy. Turns out my SI joint (sacrum illiac) keeps getting inflamed which is causing me pain. Which is pretty much what I already thought. I have not been given any great advice how to get over this but am being told this will probably all go away but could be a few years, 3, 5, etc...The way my pelvis healed up is more or less is what is causing this but is expected to be 'normal' again in time, but when that is, nobody can really say.
Right now I'm "ok", been doing a lot of lower back stretches, light slow crunches, and working the upper body. I asked about cold weather and slight humidity here and the doctor said that is probably a reason why it gets triggered.
I'm more or less nursing/rehabbing this so I can jump right back where I was a few weeks ago in training intensity. I haven't got to the book Meguro recommended to me yet due to trying to study/homework.
This really sux but I shouldn't complain because I can still walk. Keep everyone who wants to know in the loop of my progress.
On the bright side of things I have been monitoring my diet better then I have in years and see this becoming a long term habit. I've cut down on my beer/alcohol consumption tremendously which I think helps a lot because when I drink, I want to eat! I didn't completely stop drinking, for special social occasions I'll definitely have a few pints with friends...just not once, twice, three times a week like I was for years.

For my first full contact, there were weeks that I would pretty much take on the class twice a week; the recovery times were pretty long afterward. Personally, I prefer some hard rounds once every couple/few weeks and specialized training targets between (defense, footwork, etc).
It may be likely that Po1 is doing some sparring, but not logging the rounds?

Osu PO1,
I was looking back into your training log and it struck me:
Unless I've missed something, you have not put one round of sparring under your belt since... forever... :(
Call me old fashioned, but preparing for 50 rounds, wouldn't it be useful to spar a little bit beforehand? Like 10 rounds on Mondays & Wednesdays & 20 on Fridays? ...Just to get used to it a little...
MedGuy, Gary, Senshido, Hangtime, etc... what do you think? :)
Osu!
I've been sparring like Hangtime said, just not logging in the rounds :) I'm very bad at keeping a journal.
I've mostly been doing 10 rounds at a time and have done 20 a handful of times. I used to do 10-15 rounds about once a week or every other week. Wish I could say I did 50-100 once a week but I don't think I could take that. I'm surprised that my shins took it as well as they did. The last couple of weeks been taking it very easy on the kumite due to the SI joint problem. This has caused a lot of aggravation for me.
In other news.
My old student and friend is buying his first house (moves in the 28th of this month) and plans on converting his garage into a home dojo and wants to have regular sessions there which I'm not opposed to. Going to experiment with the idea that this is a private club. Will take beginners but only if they're serious, not about the money. Also still looking for one near my area because his house is a good 30-40 minute drive north of me so will probably only make it there twice a week.
I have been taking notes with my sloppy left handed hand writing and will put this in a more clear format.
Osu!

Good to hear about the rounds. I've been a bit concerned for your welfare with the 50 looming so close.
Nice to have a private Dojo too. :)

If you read back a bit it may not happen in December due to PO1's back.
Still will happen but maybe now in the spring.
I am sure he will let us all know here in the very near future.

Osu MMX, thanks for the head's up!
PO1, very selfishly, I would hate to book my flights, etc... & have to cancel...
When will you be able to confirm? :)
Gary, I don't think it would change my plans to come to your seminar if it happens; maybe I'll stay a bit longer then. :)

Going to talk to Senshido in a matter of hours/days about this (we've been communicating the last few days about this). Just didn't want to make any announcement yet before anything was decided. Trying to nurse my back/si joint to operational level. Not happy about the 'worst case scenario'.
I never thought I'd work so hard physically and maybe have to delay the plans. Trying to take this anger out on homework and studying but that seems to not be working out so well!

Osu!
Just got off the phone with Senshido and sad to say came to the conclusion to post pone this when the weather is warmer for me. I haven't been able to do much kumite for almost 3 weeks now. Now, I could do kata but I'm not that good to take 3 weeks, probably longer off from any serious kata and do a 50 man kumite. To me at least half this experience was to do a 50 man kumite and to follow the same requirements Senshido gives for his normal students.
Looking at my school schedule to post pone this to Spring or Summer means around March 18th to 27th or if I wait to Summer would mean June 7th to June 19th/20th.
The last couple of years it seems that if I'm in a cold place during fall/winter my back gives me problems off and on. It's not my 'spine' but lower right SI joint area.
Any questions or concerns, please pm me. I don't want to burn any bridges with anybody on here.

Osu! Most people will lose a fight with gravity and not live to tell about it. You won. A 50 man is test enough, no need making it twice as hard with a wonky SI. The fact that you're still training and even thinking about a 50 man kumite is good enough for me. Osu-EN1

Thanks for the replies and support, everybody. Wasn't an easy decision for me to make but the more days that have gone by without being able to do any real kumite just made it seem like the only choice I had. This was really felt like one of the hardest choices I have had to make in years even though it seems like the obvious choice still didn't make it easy. Osu!

I'll be there sooner then later, I have plans over the next year or two to start making it to the big KSK events in the UK at least annually to show my support for the organization. Right now I have to plan my travel dates in between school terms. Fortunately or unfortunately (job market is bad right now) I'm in school for a good 3 years, maybe longer but am fortunate enough to more or less get paid while I go to school full time so while in school I'll have to continue planning trips around breaks in between terms.
I'll find a way to make this up to you that planned on seeing me. I don't want to burn any bridges with any of you and if anything want to build a few 'bridges' that stretch thousands of miles.

Wasn't adding to this for a while due to being disappointed in myself but thought I would update due to a recent doctor visit this past Friday.
I ended up having a new doctor and he suffers from similar issues that I do and more or less agreed with me that the cold & wet weather during the fall & winter affect me. I'm being prescribed a bunch of anti inflammatory medication that's en route via mail but currently taking oral cortisone to stop and prevent this. I expressed my concerns of being given painkillers so instead being given about three different types of anti inflammatory medication.
I already sent Senshido a message but my plan is to increase my training because I feel like I took a step back the last couple of months but I was still training just not at the intensity I wanted to be. At the very least I'll be coming to Scotland in August and will get the exact dates soon as long as they don't interfere with Senshido's own vacation plans. I have a 2.5 to 3 week break in August is why I'm planning for that month.
Now, I'm coming for sure to at least train and if everything goes as planned with the original intent to do the 50 man and everything but if for some strange reason I get injured I'll still come to train. Of course after spending the money my intention is to do the 50 man.
Back to the training plan is slow & steady starting out with 1.5 hours of cardio on my recumbent stationary bike at resistance of 7 maintaining 75-85 RPMs, legs now feel like jello. After school sets of burpees, push ups, crunches, core exercises and kata. This is just starting out to get my body back used to it not my 50 man kumite work out plan LOL.

Might work on my will power because when I'm completely sloshed I change into another person (still devilishly handsome & funny) that definitely steps over the line but I will definitely need my "medicine" after I complete a 50 man. However, peer pressure is a hard thing to resist.

Been talking to MilkmanX a lot over the last few months about moving near him. Plan is after I'm done with school (still a few more years) is to try to land a job near him or somewhere with a warmer climate regardless as long as I land a job in said warmer area :).
I moved back here after the military because I have family I didn't see for years and a Grandma I don't feel that will be around much longer that my brother has been helping out a lot while I was out of state that I now share in the responsibility of and to spend some time with her while I can.

P01,
At this point in your life, I'd give serious thought to moving to someplace that affords you a better quality of life. In this case, it's weather. Maybe Arizona or someplace else dry and warm. Once you have a job, are married, and have children it gets harder and harder to make such moves (at least it feels harder). I know it may seem like an impossibility now... but it really looks from the outside that you need to make a drastic move. Life can be challenging enough without subjecting yourself to undue pain and suffering.

I agree 150% with BobH... :)
Long story short: choose your place before you can't...
Your future wife may have a job that will pin you somewhere.
If you create your own business, you'll have core staff and maybe customers that won't allow you to move.
It took me 4 years from the moment I stepped back to close down the factories & wind down the business so I could move.
Nobody had told me beforehand that once the business was on, I'd be stuck in the place, and I was too stupid to see it myself! :(

Training is still moving forward but found out my school is now voting to start the summer term July 5th which would change my availability if that happens. Hasn't happened yet but voting is supposed to be done by March 28th.
Reason for this is because of the huge federal and state budget cuts when traditionally part of FY 10 budget was used for part of summer term and FY 11 budget. However, with the budget cuts they had no FY 10 budget to use to pay for summer term. My economics instructor has been with this school since the 60s and said this is the first time this has happened since he's been there...not good.
Might not be free until early September to come to Scotland now is my point.
