What do you think of this?

http://www.adnantarsha.com/Kyokushin_Test.htm#2

I don't know if it's the same syllabus for every kyokushin kaikan there is (IKO 1-8, WKO, IFK, etc.) but it sure looks like a lifetime of study... I mean, to really learn and execute well each and every requirement.

So, what happens if I check my grade requirements (9th kyu) which I'm supposed to know already? I'd say I don't meet most requirements.

This is what I'm working on at dojo:

Kihon:
From seiken chudan tsuki to ushiro geri (all kihon strikes and blocks: seiken, shuto, uke, hiji, hiza, geri).

Ido geki:
3 and 4 steps. It's usually a seiken ago uchi/mawashi uchi, into a hiza or a low/middle/high jodan or mawashi geri. Includes side stepping and switching stances.

Conditioning:
10 min jog with few timed sprints
Leg split (I'm 1 foot above floor)
Streching: hand touches sole of foot from a seated position with legs open.
20 knuckle push ups (can do 30 w/hands)
80 fast crunches
Chin ups: can't do even one!!
Hand stands: haven't been asked to do them yet
Jump (tobi geri): (is it a jumping front kick?) lower than my own height.

Katas:
Taykyoku Sono Ichi, Ni and San.
Sokugi Taikyoku Sono Ichi.
Pinan Sono Ichi.

Kumite:
3 consecutive rounds (1 min. each)

15 min pad strike practice.

Ok, I'll admit I have been a little lazy outside the dojo lately (a nasty cold helped too, haha). Need to work harder!

Do NOT follow online grading requirements! All you have to be worried about is what your sensei has taught you, end of. If you are unsure ask your instructor.

Please excuse me, but I believe you misunderstood... I did not say anything about following online requirements listed on that document. I'm just comparing that against the actual, real practice I'm getting in my dojo. 100% Sensei's instructions, I assure you.

By that I meant that online document would say I'm not a 9th kyu. My sensei and Honbu's Shihan thought otherwise because I did pass my grading;)

Even the kata videos I see around here have some little differences with what I'm being taught at the dojo. (We start Pinan Sono Ichi in standing mokuso with a strong breathing motion, then gedan barai and then seiken... etc.)

Again! Just follow the dojo instruction.kata is different from organisation to organisation. Even within a given organisation slight differences exisit! My advice just do as you have been taught. If your sensei/honbu shihan say your are good enough to pass why would you worry about what any other individual thinks?

Niceguy is right. Always listen to your Sensei/instructor and follow your dojo syllabus. If someone from outside corrects you, thank him for the correction, but double-check with your instructor, before you do any major changes. Different dojo do things differently.

And don't be fooled by other syllabus that looks "harder". It might very well be that the expectations is higher in your dojo, due to the slimmer syllabus. It's impossible to know, so you might as well stop worrying about what other people do.

Nix has a good point - what you can't account for is the quality of the things required. You'll know if your instructor is one of those who insists on a restart when things aren't done to his / her standard! :D

That's right! Luckily for me, he's always pushing students to train hard, inside and outside dojo.

Sensei's very cool. When he's training us, anyone screws up bums around, whole class has to restart and start over again:cool:

OSU, heck I am not even sure how ranking works in this dojo I am in. We have official ranking days every two months or so, but then sometimes a person will come in with a new belt color one day, completely independent of ranking day. I got my stripe just at the end of class in the office. So here, they are always watching, always testing, in a way...
Actually kind of an intimidating thought!

I agree.

Every day in our lives is an education, some tests come when you're less expecting them!

Ok, I'm off to train!:D

My dojo pretty much follows this syllabus, more or less, but even if not exact, I use it as a guideline.

Could make for good reading for other people.

Another site for guide lines that could be useful but for me rather easy for rank requirements, but could make for good reading is http://www.masutatsuoyama.com/

Minor thread deviation: Most syllabi are amusing in that they are heavily weighted toward the Junior grades. Masses to learn in the beginning, and less and less as the years go by. "Hey, let's demand more Kata!"

And then we're surprised why people drop out both at the beginning, and after Shodan...?

You right, something I must do a relook at.

That's the biggest advantage of independence. The ability to modify the syllabus without having to experience the wrath from above...
