Although Judo and BJJ comparison's have been made, let's revisit this as applied to MMA?

In your observations, which of these, Judo vs. BJJ, do you believe is a better preparation for MMA?

Seem like most of the Fighters' Backgrounds in the UFC's cite BJJ.

There's not much throwing in MMA, but I see a lot of clinches and ground fighting (grappling).

And how is Japanese Jujitsu different from BJJ, typically?

For the karate-ka, Judo seems to be a better compliment, but for those serious about MMA, BJJ seem to be the better path?

lol

Before you open a MMA pre III, let me qoute from wikipedia.

The main arts employed in MMA are
1) Muay Thai for knees, kicks, elbows, Clinching, and general standup game
2) Boxing for stronger punching, footwork, stances, pacing, targetting etc
3) Judo for learning to control opponent weight against him for executing throws and takedowns.
4) BJJ for submission techniques when you DO go on the ground such as locks, arm bars, leg locks, shoulder locks, and chokes.
5) Wrestling used mostly to control body movements of oponent and for defending takedown and throws.

As you see both BJJ and judo has their place. If your ultimate goal is to preapre for MMA than you should add everything from each art :) because thats what MMA is about

judo is ju jutsu without the locks and other striking aspects ,the weapons like tonfa, sai etc.

brazilian jiu jitsu is also based a little on judo because of carlos gracie's training with the famous judo-ka masahiko kimura.

jigoro kano aimed for judo to have a concept of maximum efficiency.

the brazilians with the mixture of their own techniques,ju jutsu taught by japanese settlers and the following judo training came up with a highly scientific BJJ.

i'd go for BJJ for MMA though i suggesgt power of one is the best guy amongst us for this topic due to his BJJ experience

OK, I shall put on a pointy dunce cap and stand by the corner and work on my horse stance.

I'm cool with closing this thread, Fred's severe beating of this dead horse made it impossible to rise again as a zombie: At least, not from my own necromancy.

btw, really enjoyed that Sat's UFC show.

grappling for mma is more of submission wrestling, incorporating techniques from all grappling arts (wrestling, judo, bjj, sambo, etc.). you have to know takedowns and throws, sprawls, sweeps, the positions (mount, guard, rear mount, scarf hold), etc. for the submissons, the most common (kimura, arm bar, rear naked choke, guillotine choke, triangle choke (with arm and lets)). anyone entering mma has to learn these common moves and be able to apply them. just like the striking part of mma, doesn't draw from a single discipline, fighters have to work boxing, kickboxing, etc. no matter what single discipline you come from, cross training is key.

Hamaval,
Seriously, instead of talking about "what style would be best for MMA", Why don't you just go to a MMA gym and start training?

Osu!

Are you allowed to face-punch a dead horse? :)

I would try find the 'best' teacher or gym/dojo and not worry too much about the art.

Best = where you feel comfortable, but challenged, proper (hard) training, experienced teachers, etc.

Hamaval,
Seriously, instead of talking about "what style would be best for MMA", Why don't you just go to a MMA gym and start training?

I have been cross-training in the Judo Club, past few months. That University's on Winter recess, but I'll goto open-mat tonight.

I also had cross-trained in the Gracie BJJ until I pulled my shoulder, but it's healed now. I had tried out the Judo Club since the fee costs 1/3rd as the Gracie BJJ Academy: $43 vs. $120. The BJJ guys are more fit then the Judo's, but both schools are tough, each with excellent instructors.

Too bad Dashaa Karate dojo is only 2/week: they are so violent! Osu. I still goto Seido Juku "Point-Karate" (hey, it's still karate, at least the kata's good, but they are too "touchy" about contact).

I had planned on staying in the Judo Club, 2.5 hours per day and continue with karate 3-4/week, but I've learned that one of the Dashaa MMA Kyokushin Karate sandan, a former full contact champ recently in Japan, teaches the 1 hour Judo class at the BJJ Academy, followed by 2.5 hours of BJJ, mostly rolling.

That is why now I am tempted to go back to BJJ where I began my grapple training. BTW, to my horror, nearly 5 years of Hapkido did not prepare me to fend off BJJ guys on the ground: My grappling and throwing really suck!

Horsemeat does a body good!

As for OP, just do what you want. Despite formalized curricula that exist in both judo and BJJ, each school focuses differently on different aspects. If you like the pricing and practice of the university judo club, then just let winter break pass and sign back up in the spring. If you want to go back to (Ralph?) Gracie, then have at them!

OK, I've decided: Judo Club for the coming academic year since the BJJ Academy no longer offers add'l MMA classes. And I like the more time practcing falls: as a mt. biker, I've used air-falls and rollouts several times to prevent injury.

Later in the year, during recesses, I'll drop by the BJJ Academy to throw and roll, to "check" my progress.

Is it you also posting about this pre mma thing over at bullshido also?
And I must be missing your reply, but why dont you just go to an mma gym and get everything nicely put together already?

Since I'm dividing time b/w Karate dojo and Judo Club, I'll wait on the full MMA gym until I've got a decent throw and ground game. Then I'll check out Modern Combative or Pacific Ring Sports.

The reason why I got to thinking was that I was getting impatient with Seido Juku "point"-karate dojo that do not care enough about fight conditioning, but are good with kata (they delayed one of my ranks due to miss-perceptions on lack of control).

So, now it's time for me to walk the talk.

Berkeley has a wealth of martial arts places to choose from, except a full schedule Kyokushin or Enshin dojo.

UK has something to be proud of...the Naga Viper pepper which is now the world's hottest chile pepper which is a hybrid between the habanero and the ghost chile (hotter than a habanero): http://www.morehorror.com/Naga-Viper-Pepper-Hotter-than-Ghost-Chili510311 Personally, after just eating some eggs with habanero sauce..habaneros serve me just right! I can't imagine using something as "hot" as the naga viper pepper for sauce I'd put on my eggs!

I had some of these chilli's, was putting them in bottles of olive oil and using it as salad dressing, tasty and great at clearing the sinus.

I'll need to have a look for some of those PO1
