This is my first entry. I am starting my workout today. I am going for a looong walk! LOL.
But seriously I have just come into the new year and want to get in better shape. I just started Kyokushin and don't want to be beaten to death. Most of all I don't want to get winded when I am working out or sparring!
For the past 2 years I have been teaching in an isolated community with no available resources. I was also healing a hurt knee. That led to gaining 40 lbs which made the knee and my arthritic ankle ache! So I ate well, walked a lot, played golf all I could while walking the courses (in BC they are mountain courses where I was and walking a course is a serious workout. Especially when a cougar or grizzly is chasing you!).
I am NOT interested in bulking up. My ankle would just give up on me. I am interested in serious cardio and serious core training. At 45 I am not ancient but recognize that a workout that will work for my 20 year old great big son will not necessarily work for me. And as I am constantly going way up and then way down financially I can't really afford a gym membership. So I am looking for exercises that can get me in the best fighting (and living) form that I can achieve.
Goals for the weekend:
1) Get a used cross trainer or stationary bike.
2) Read through enough of these training journals and from other sources like scoobysworkshop (google it) so that I can design my plan. He is also on youtube under scooby1961 I think.
Thats it for now. I will try and take a 'before' shot so we can all see if I progress at all. :)

Awesome! Best of luck to you Genma!
I think its already been suggested to you, but I wanted to reiterate it - please be sure to check out www.rosstraining.com as well. That guy is a great resource for "fight" training ideas, and he is also very into "low tech, high effect".
Many of the forum members here steal a lot from his website and books.

Good deal Genma.
I took a quick glance at Scooby's website, and will look into it more later, but, please do check out rosstraining (he has stuff for sale, but you can get very far in your training without it) and crossfit (you can glean enough from their website to understand their methodology).
Ross offers a lot in terms of getting "fight ready" as he trains fighters and used to be a boxer himself. I recently purchased his books and they are useful and all, but he does tell you quite a bit on his website.
CF is good resource for exercises, demonstration of exercises and breakdown of the exercises. Personally, I don't follow the CF WOD's or anything like that, but I do utilize the exercises and customize workouts for myself based on my goals, etc.
Also, might I suggest Mobility WOD; http://mobilitywod.blogspot.com/
Kelly Starrett is a guru of mobility. Each video gives you a guideline for 10 minutes of stretching/mobilizing for specific movements, etc.
Still reading up on Scooby, thanks for the resource (one can never have too many!)!
Looking forward to celebrating your progress! OSU!

Ahhh... Day 2 of the journal. Today is a Kyokushin class with Deaken in Toronto so I have gotten up early and will get my son up soon too. It is a long drive to get there but the karate is so good that it is worth it. I only wish I had more time and money to go more often! But I do cross train locally 2 days a week in Shotokan so I am getting lots of classes. :)
I am trying to find a used Elliptical. I found one on the local kijiji that they only want $75 for and it would do the trick for now. But it has no readout function so I am not sure effective it will be if I can't keep track of my speed/heart rate/etc. Anyone out there know whether this really makes a difference?
My pet peeve: Knuckle Pushups. OK I hate them! I read somewhere that they mess up your knuckle joints increasing the chance of you getting arthritis in your hands later on. As I already have premature arthritis in my ankle I don't want to mess with that. But where did I hear that??? I know on Scooby's videos he says doing them on your hands can hurt your wrist joints and recommends the knuckle ones. So I am thinking I am going to try and learn to do them on my knuckles by starting in knuckle push-ups when I can and as soon as it hurts switch back to the other way. If I increase the number of KPs each day then maybe I can overcome my serious hatred and distrust of this training technique. Also I think that pushups are great for buiding your chest and you can do them in a number of ways to work different muscle groups so time to toss the monkey off my back!
By the way... I stepped on the scale today and it said I weigh 190lbs! I feel like a skeleton! But it is a good starting point for my journal. I like 195lbs + or - about 5lbs. I know a lot of the workout guys like Scooby or Bill Phillips or all of them talk about having 6 small meals a day. That will be hard for me. I like coffee for breaky, coffee for snack, tiny lunch, huge dinner. And wash it all down with a metamucil before bed. ;-) Not the healthiest diet but it has worked in helping me lose the 45ish lbs that I have so now time to work on nutrition.
Now this is getting a bit long but I like to get all the details in. And besides I think I must take after Captain John Nye. He is a guy who traveled with Mark Twain back when they were still settling the country. Twain described him like this: "He had a good memory and a tongue hung in the middle. This is a combination that gives immortality to conversation." (from Roughing It pp138-139).
Gotta go folks. Thanks for checking in. :) OSU

Osu,
Haven't heard that push ups can cause getting arthritis - to overcome the hurt - do it leaning against a wall and doing standing push ups - that works quite well in de-sensitising the knuckles.
Perhaps also doing some pad work/makiwara work will also help.
Keep it up!

Thanks for the great advise Ashiharakaicho. I will definitely try the wall first and then more pressure as we go. :)
Today I had a major karate fail. I didn't sleep well last night as I am on some fairly new meds and they upset my tummy a bit. Add to that the sugary apple fritter that I ate just before class and you have all the ingredients for a bad tummy! I train at Deaken's club and they have a fabulous cardio workout that is different every time but really effective. So that IS what I am there for. But less than 10 minutes in I was fading fast and thinking I was going to barf so I had to sit out a bit. When I came back it was worse. Aaarg!
On the positive side of things I sat at the end of the dojo where the chairs for parents are and that put me at the blackbelt end of the dojo. I was able to watch during the kumite drill Sempai Olga who is a very good fighter. I was totally impressed by how she always seems to have her hands up protecting her front at though there was an elastic keeping her elbows in. Very effective and I know we should all be doing that but as the class went on and people got tired their hands would drop. Not Olga's. So my goal is to learn to keep my hands up higher than we did in the WKA type styles.
I also had it drilled into me that without a drastic improvement in cardio I am not going to make it. So now I am psyched to really get my cardio program revved up a bit.
Anyway, thanks for reading!

Sorry to hear you had a rough session. We all have 'em from time to time, but it's great to see you getting something positive out of it and coming out feeling psyched. Way to go!

OSU,
You are on the right path. Don't get discouraged. The only way to get through this is to keep trying your best (as you presenlty do) and the improvements will come. Time and persistence are incredible tools for good results. I have no doubt to your dedication and your attitude is superb as is your effort.
I do suggest leaving the apple fritter to after class. Something more stable for nutrition before will be easier on your system ;)

Reflection before training:
Today's plan: Big Jak (my son) and I will be heading over to our friend Tim's place. Tim converted his garage into a really great workout place. Mirrors, bags, weights, various pads. Sensei Blair will be meeting us there. But when we train at Tim's it is the 'blackbelt club' in the true sense of the word club so we all hang our belts at the door and just workout together as equals sharing what we know. It works well because we all cross-train so we all have neat ideas.
Cardio is key for me today. Tim has a treadmill and a good leather skipping rope so I am going to try to get an hour in between the two of those.
PNV stretches are also important to me. I REALLY want to get into the side splits. I can pretty much hit the floor in the front splits but the side splits I have serious trouble with. Every time I try to get a little extra into the side splits a little voice calls up to me from my groin area saying 'oh no you don't!' after which a battle ensues where I try to relax but my lower section refuses. Hence no progress. :(
(Anyone have any ideas on how I can get more stretch for side splits?)
Here is another problem that I need to work on. When I did the WKA style karate we fought in hami kamae stance which is pretty low so you were necessarily distanced from your opponent except when exchanging points. At that time I always looked at my opponent's face and never where I was attacking. With Kyokushin the stance is more upright so that hands are held more upright and you are so close you can smell the other person's breath. Not sure why but I now look at everything I am trying to hit which makes blocking those techniques pretty easy. So today I want to work on where to look. I have noticed that the good sparring people from our dojo (Deaken, Olga, etc.) look into the middle of the chest (ie the triangle formed between your chin and your shoulders) so I am going to try to mimic that.
The rest we will play by ear. Blair (3rd Dan in Ishinryu, 4th Dan Shotokan) usually has some great stuff to work on too. Ishin is a derivative of Kyokushin and his fighting skills are really exceptional even in his later 40s.
Now lets see if we can follow the plan! OSU and thanks for reading. :)

Feedback from Sunday training with the Black Belt Club...
My first goal was to get an hour in of cardio... mission accomplished. I started on the treadmill walking at 3mph (must be an American machine as we do Kilometers here in Canada) and then moved it up to 5mph after 5 minutes. I did 35 minutes at that speed with NO problems, then did a cool down and we started our workout. When we were done I ran for another half hour at the same speed. But I had forgotten my shoes (there is lots of snow here so we wear big boots) and so I ran barefoot. Bad idea with an arthritic ankle doncha know!
After the run we did some warmups and then got out the contact pads. First we had one guy holding the pads and the other 3 taking turns hitting it in the pattern set up by the first guy so for instance he does Gayaku Zuki/Jodan Mawashi geri so the next 2 guys do likewise. Then he goes to the end of the line and the next guy makes it up. We did 20ish minutes of that which was fun.
Then we did response drills where the guy with the focus pads kept them down initially and then popped whichever out to where ever and you had to 'hit what you see'. Lots of fun but I don't react super quickly and I also tend to throw hand techniques rather than any kicks. I need to do more of this drill to get used to reacting with kicks as well. Anyway, 20 minutes of that. Then on with the pads and some light sparring for 20 minutes.
I was happy with the actual workout but found that although my cardio was fine aerobically it is the anaerobic stuff that killed me. Am I holding my breath? How do I train anaerobically when I am on my own?
And yes, the jogging with bare feet left my ankle lame for the rest of the day but it was fine this morning so lesson learned. :)
Today being Monday we have a 1.5 hour Shotokan class here in town. I am going to do some aerobics today but I am limited in equipment here so I think I will walk up and down my stairs for half an hour. At the very least it will flip out the dog and the cat, lol.
Thanks for reading! OSU!
Oops! I left some things out...
Yesterday after we worked out we went right out through the 2 feet of snow and climbed into the hottub! Oh yeah! We then took turns jumping out and doing snow angels in the snow with only our trunks on and then jumped back into the tub! Lots of fun.
On another note today I plan to also do some PNV stretches and some minor workout with various pushups, chair dips, etc. today. :)
Thanks, OSU!

Managed some good cardio with a long walk today. The stair climbing in my house shook too many of the wall hangings so I stopped it fairly quickly. Ditto for burpees. ;-)
Did a 2 hour shotokan class. I did a lot of stretching before and then we worked through the Heian katas and then learned some of Seipei. Solid technical class with not much perspiration. Learned lots though. :)
Tomorrow and the next day we are expecting a huge snow storm so I won't be trecking out to Deaken's as originally planned. :( But my son and I can do some strength training with dumbellls, pushups, crunchies, leg raises, etc. I still am in the process of acquiring a cardio machine but in the meantime I am looking for a good skipping rope.

The group I train with in Shotokan were all Ishinryu people until that club closed. Ishinryu (Ticky Donovan version) is mostly a Kyokushin knock-off which has been adapted for WKA type tournaments. Sensei Blair who was teaching it probably learned it in Ishin. It is a really neat kata for breaking arms and whatnot. Quite deadly! :) I don't think it is a Shotokan kata though.

I find that for skipping ropes the inexpensive plastic ones work best. Light, don't tangle up, are durable and very easy to take with you. It's what we use at the dojo for the kickboxing and kumite training.
We order ours in bulk from Boes. They sell retail through canbox. Here is the link to the page for the rope we use: http://www.canbox.ca/c267858p16712646.2.html

We have a 1 hour Shotokan class tonight so Jak and I will probably work out today with the dumbells and such. He is 20 and strong as an ox though so working out with him is a little humiliating at times as he can lift about 10 times what I can and I'm a big, strong guy! Actually the day is absolutely beautiful out. The sun is shining and no wind. But the watery pile that the snowplows left on my driveway froze solid overnight and were a little tough to relocate! One still isn't finished but I am leaving it for when the boy wakes up!
I think I will practice kata later when the aspirin has kicked in. I love kata. My son's favorite is Yantsu and I tend to agree with him. You don't need a lot of space to practice it and it has some very good applications. By contrast a kata like Tsuki No is really good for training you in the basics but not too entertaining to practice. Saifa has always been a favorite too. So I will practice those ones. :)

Back from class. I made it through most of the class (had to step out twice). Thats good but I need to figure out what is up with that. The problem that I am having is that all of a sudden there just isn't enough oxygen getting into my system. I am plenty strong, not worried about pain, etc. etc. but when the oxygen is low you don't go! Period! Now I am wondering if I haven't developed some form of Asthma or something. Note to self: 'check that with the doc'.
Apart from that I loved the class. Sempai Olga taught it and she is pretty phenomenal. She either is or has been North American champ and it shows. She is a total technician and so if you aren't sure how to do something you just look at her because she IS doing it exactly right. She has a natural economy of movement, keeps always at the ready with hands up, can kick effectively from any angle, etc. etc. I just love training with her! Between her and Deaken we are pretty blessed (I am not religious at all so thats kind of a turn of phrase) to have found this dojo and to be able to train there.

I am sore and I am tired! Awesome! :)

a common problem when you're starting out is remembering to breath, got to keep reminding people to breath at the kickboxing then catch myself more or less holding my breath when i'm concentrating at Senshido's Kyokushin class.
you're a lucky guy having two great instructors like Deaken and Olga.

What would you suggest? I can do some stretches later but it is very tight at the moment. Any ancient Chinese secrets there Fred???

Here, I found it: :)
(Almost) Never Use Ice on Low Back Pain! (http://saveyourself.ca/articles/icing-exceptions.php)
An important exception to conventional wisdom about icing and heating
This article is from a website originally suggested by meguro!
From Pavel Tatsouline, Relax Into Stretch, there are recommendations NOT to stretch the lower back either... Stretch the hips instead and make sure the lower back is solid state.

Thanks for the article Fred! It is a very good one and in principal I agree. In my case my back pain was caused when I jarred it as I hit hard snow while shoveling. I suspect that it is more of a minor tear and therefore the ice is better. The article agrees on this point by the way. Here is a quote:
"In the case of some fresh back injuries — such as a lumbar whiplash in a car accident, or a severe attack of pain when trying to lift something heavy — the muscles themselves may be damaged, traumatized and inflamed, and in this case heat might exacerbate the inflammation, and ice might help. But this is rare!"
All good and I am glad that I read the article. I will look at this differently from now on. :)
I just woke up. :) I am sore all over which is indicative of a having had a good workout yesterday. Today my son and I are planning on shoveling off our patio so that we will have a place to jump rope. That is the plan. If he is sore like me it may not happen! ;-)

This week is not turning into the best workout week! But on the good side I started work again. I am a teacher and had been held up waiting for my vulnerable sector check to come back. The whole system is at a standstill without that. But now I can teach supply and apply for fulltime posts at the same time. If you aren't on the supply list you can't even apply for the fulltime jobs!
Work brings money and that was holding up my getting some of the equipment that I wanted so all is good. Thanks for reading! :) OSU!

Osu! Nice to hear the job scene is perking up. Regarding the back strain, rest, foam roller/lacrosse ball usually works for me. Here's another approach.
