Joe used to also teach TKD and I actually like the guy LOL. I think he's one of those guys you either like or hate and he's very opinionated but I don't take all his opinions as fact, most of them as entertainment.
However, he is very very very flexible and does train a lot. Every purple belt and above I have seen under Eddie Bravo is flexible and is one of the requirements Bravo has said countless times to be a black belt under him. He expects everyone that's a brown/black belt to be able to do the splits. In the BJJ world Eddie Bravo is also either liked or hated, too, go figure.

I like Rogan overall, but his commentary... at least it's not as bad as

I also don't like Joe Rogan but mostly from what he says when he isn't commentating.

Rogan's turning side kick is really good. I've only seen the tiny cellphone vid from GSP's phone of this training session before. This longer, higher resolution vid shows his skill at this kick much better.
It's kind of interesting, when I took TKD (WTF), we did the turning back kick almost exclusively. We never practiced the turning side kick, and in fact, were always "corrected" when we "overturned" into this kick.
Side note: I've liked Joe Rogan ever since he chewed Carlos Mencia a new one. :)

I also dislike Joe Rogan... As PO1 said, either you like him or not and I don't. I just think that sometimes his fight analyses and post-fight comments are... in the right field.
As for the vid, he was teaching a ushiro kakato geri (back kick) but actually was doing something between a ushiro and a yoko geri (side kick). I do have to say for his defense that he was dead on about raising the knee before kicking and that his kicks looked dynamic and powerful.

I've hated Joe Rogan since he took over "The Man Show" from Carolla and Kimmel. :o

Spot on. What Rogan does is not a WTF back kick, it's an ITF reverse side kick. Completely different mechanics, movement and intent.

Interestingly, at Yamaki Karate, we're taught the back kick both ways. However, the vast majority of the time, we train it much like Rogan was doing it.
Is this how it's usually done for most Kyokushin studios as well?

I'm a huge Carolla fan of his "love line" and "man show" days so I can't argue that...except man show wasn't as good as Carolla was on love line.

Agreed. I used to love to watch love line. A local radio station here in ATL carried it for awhile after I moved back here; I'd listen to it at night until I realized it was fueling my insomnia! Luckily, they cancelled it and I got a girlfriend (no the two aren't related :p) then soon thereafter, the sleep picked up, lol.

At Dashaa KK this turning side kick's done the same as i learned at Golden State Taekwondo.
At Seido, I've not seen this kick done. I see the spinning hook kick, aka reverse round kick, but the knee's not chambered as high as hapkido's or taekwondo's.

We do the spinning hook kick as well, though most of the students tend to use the old-style foot position.
We're taught to chamber the spinning hook kick the exact same height as the turning side kick to hide which one we're throwing. Seems to work pretty well, except for me (since I'm horrible at all of the spinning/turning techniques).

I listened to it too when I was working nights doing security when I was first a college student...a decade & change ago . Since I was a night owl to collect a pay check it actually worked out for me...Carolla and Dr. Drew make a great combination together and I wish they would do a show together again.

Finally got a chance to watch the clip, man. Like Rogan or not, you cannot deny that his kicks pack a wallup. If my failing memory serves, I learned that as a spinning sidekick (opposed to back kick) in my Hapkido days.

At our old hapkido dojang, we called it turning side kick to emphasize the linear kck delivery, spinning referred to circular kicks, such as the hook or round kicks.
Joe's clearly not showing a turning back kick.
Seems to me, old hapkido was MMA before MMA became a specific sport, thanks to the awesome UFC.
Joe has got a potty mouth on his comic podcast.
I like Joe. Commented well at the #126.

I agree with you s_naka, The kick that Rogan is doing in not a back kick. It is somewhere in the middle between a back kick and a side kick

I liked how he emphasized that the side kick should be thrown straight (solar plexus/rib cage level) as opposed to aiming it higher. Obviously anyone able to perform a side kick that reaches head heighth or higher (where it looks like you`re doing a split while standing up) is incredibly flexible and coordinated, but as Rogan commented the power of the kick decreases as you increase the height. Also his advice about keeping the knee chambered higher than the kick and using it as a defensive technique is smart. Now if I could only kick half as well as him I`d be a happy camper!

It's better to throw the kick with the knee down. The heel shooting up under the guard is the best way to land the spin back kick. The knee up is easier to block.
