Whoa! This guy is awesome. Thanks for posting sdfighter. That one guy could not get out of his clinch! That is the same guy who he set up with leg kicks for the head kick knockout.

I have a friend who trains under him. His gym is as legendary, as Mr. Nurse.

If ever you get the opportunity to train with Phil Nurse, I highly recommend it!

Phil was probrably Master Skens greatest student. His kicks were so fast, you had to see it to believe it.

As well as being a European Muaythai champion, he also did very well in Professional Boxing, before breaking his arm. He would most likely have gone a long way in that sport also. Still fate has its path, and it is so good to see that he has achieved so much in America and with the UFC.

My first ever Muaythai session was taught by Phil, when I was just 11 years old...

...many moons ago..

I trained at The Wat between Sept. 2009 and May 2010. My girlfriend for my birthday gave me a private lesson with Kru Phil.

I asked him to clinch, and by far, out of all of my experiences in martial arts, this was the most frightening and humbling experience I've ever had. It made me realize how little I really knew about "stand-up" fighting.

He takes the idea of "setting up your technique" to a whole new creative level. Very open-minded, no technique is too flashy. Sergei Osipov shares similar fighting strategies, he really sells those left hooks to the body, and once the opponent starts trading left hooks with him, that right leg jodan mawashi is wide open to come over the opponent's left hook. Tsukamoto's jumping knees is another good example as well, taking a low-percentage technique and creating a split-second opportunity to turn it into a high-percentage technique.

But his clinch…my god it's indescribable.

Lol!

I have been locked in that clinch a fair few times. I trained one to one, in private lessons with Phil over quite a few years when I was a trainee instructor.

At Master Skens Muaythai demonstrations I would regularly be Phils pad holder. Being slightly taller at 6ft 4inches I was a great crash dummy partner when Phil would perform traditional Muay Boran techniques.

We used to finish our set, whereby I would be in a low level horse stance, and he would run up, standing on my lead leg with his left foot and leap up and around onto my shoulders, then drop me - with downward elbows - all in the blink of an eye!

Phil always got a round of applause for that one!

No one remembers the crash dummy :( lol.

Were you in this demonstration (at the 2:00 mark)?

Phil also has these incredible clinch jumping knees. It's like being trapped in a dryer.

Wow - I did not know that was on youtube!

I imagine that is about twenty years ago as I was wearing red shorts, and only the seniors wore white.

Those juniors were awesome in training, as were Bill King and Ronnie Thompson who followed Phil and I on that clip.

Thanks for posting that.

Claim to fame - shouting at Phil Nurse to hit harder while working him on the pads - lol! Not many people have had that honour!

Osu!

Phil punches so hard that his metacarpals are bent. I couldn't believe it when I saw it in person. There's a video of it floating around on youtube of his hand.
