Osu,

Big Al was just asked to offer less details about his workouts & the nature of his training in his K4L training log - although I respect this request, I do not approve of it, nor do I really understand it...

In the "Budo Masters Of Russia" video that circulated on the forum, at some moment, workout notes are shown & seem extremely detailed, with drawings of the techniques, etc...

I myself am keeping a workout log that journals my daily training, injuries & activities... i am also keeping some pen & paper private notes with techniques, bunkai, corrections and recommendations from my teachers; BUT, I found out that (1) I've been sometimes slacking to keep accurate records & (2) for the records that I have, I regret not having put in more time to write things in much more details than I did --- I regret it now as I realize that I've lost some of the knowledge that was entrusted to me :o:(!

How much details are you putting in your private notes?
How are you using these in your training and/or teaching?
Could one of the respected senseis on the board share with us some examples of their detailed private notes, so as to guide us humble apprentices?
:)

Interesting thread, Fred :)

As for me, what you see on K4L is the extent of my notes. I could certainly use a little more detail - I think you are right that detailed logging is good.

Osu!

I take notes on an irregular basis. I focus on seminars and special training more than regular training. Ideally, I think regular training would feature just as much, but repetition in training equals repetition in writing, and it's not much fun taking notes at 1AM.

As for my notes series, I include drawings, descriptions, specif references to points of attack and defence and angles. Always angles.

I do a good job of leaving notes in my journal; like Sandman, what's on K4L is largely the extent of it. From time to time, when I can, I jot things down in the notebook I keep in my gear bag. I also have another notebook that I write down self defense and breaking setups, in case I need on in a pinch. That said, I seldom go back and look through the latter of the two notebooks.

Where I should try to do a better job is tracking notes of my classes. What they did, what worked and what didn't and why. I do a decent job of keeping that stuff in my head and I tend to remember well...even back to my early days of training. I know at some point, I'm going to wish I'd written this stuff down, which is why I want to get into a better habit of doing so.

Since I train to improve myself, ideally I should have something new to write after each training session. Well, we know how that goes. A lot of it does sound repetitive, especially if no improvements are being made. And that is telling. No change means as much as change-it's data you can use to improve your training.

I'd like to add photos and video to my training log, but not until there's a forum for comedy/horror.:o

I try to keep extensive notes, as you may not understand something one day but upon looking back it may click and you'll get that "Aha!" moment. There's also some drills that I like that I will just plain forget if I don't write them down. Admittedly my private notes are even more detailed than my journal, but since they're mostly in a notebook with drawings I typically stick to what I can easily explain on here.

Osu,

That would be great is some of you guys could either scan, or post a picture of a page or three of your notes...
For some reason I've always loved this kind of notebooks with scribbled notes alongside thoughts and sketches... this is stationery with a soul... :)

Thanks in advance. ;)
