Osu,

I heard that Shhan Gong Han, Kyokushin Union China Branch Chief will attempt a 60 men kumite in Japan in the coming months for his 6th Dan grading test.

I'll try to get more info, and maybe head to Shanghai for a few days to see how he trains and prepares for it... maybe bring you an interview.

My dojo mate Alex asked me if I'd like to go to Japan for the event... we'll see how that could work too... :)

Osu,

Any reason why 60 fights? 10 for each dan? Normally one had 20, 30, 50 and 100 Man Kumite. Will he be testing with Hasegawa Shihan?

Osu,

Yes, it felt strange to me too & I assumed it is 10 fights per Dan grade, but I will find out and report Sir! :)

What's also remarkable is typically you're not a young spring chicken anymore by the time you go up for rokudan :). I have no idea of his exact age but I'm guessing he's at least 40 years old. To me, that's pretty amazing to attempt, knowing what challenge lies ahead.

Osu,

I think Shihan Gong is 44 this year (or maybe 42, I am not sure.)
Very young for a Rokudan :) - If what I was told is true, he was the youngest Shihan ever in Kyokushin Union. :)

It is a great achievement for Shihan Gong. I wish him all the best in his grading!

Under IKO1 the last real promotion test is for yondan (40 fights). After that promotions are done on recommendation of Honbu. This Union custom sounds unusual. Anyone know how WKO does it after yondan?

Thank you for the information Smoothsake.
It is unclear at this moment if the 60 man kumite is a Kyokushin Union "custom", or if it is organized for another reason, maybe at Shihan Gong's request.

If and when I can find out more details, I'll post them here. :)

Indeed - Soke David Cook at the 1993 Ashihara European Summer Camp did a 50 Man Kumite to celebrate his 50th. He had done it previously in 1977 (I think) under the BKK of Hanshi Arneil.

Inspiring to have such people around.

I know under IFK/BKK and many offshoots (BC and Senshido) come to mind, sandan is the last technical test. I know BC and Senshido require a 50 man for sandan, too...after all the kata, tamishiwari, kihon, renraku, etc. I believe Martin has said that for yondan and up in WKO that there is no specific test but his instructor did test for godan? Interesting to find out what all the different knockdown styles, orgs, and individual dojo require for dan gradings.

As a matter of interest - one of my former Kyokushin instructors (AK Ismail) got rokudan from Sosai at the age of 33.

See below - originally posted by Dent (if I'm not mistaken) This was for Okinawan karate-ka.

7th Dan Yamashita Tadashi [shorin ryu] age 26
8th Dan Yagi [Meibukan] age 46
8th Dan Miyahara [Kobayashi] age 44
8th Dan Miyazato [Jundokan} age 42
8th Dan Toguchi [ Shoreikan] age 41
8th Dan Nakazato [Kobayashi] age 41
8th Dan Kise Fusei [kenshin kan] age 42
10th Dan Nakazato [Shorinji] age 42
10th Dan Shimabuku Eizo [shobayashi] age 39

Recently at the Kazakstan World Cup, Hussein Sulaiman of Kuwait was awarded his 8th Dan - making him the highest (or second) non Japanese in the Rengokai. But kudo's to Gong Shihan for his achievements ...

Osu,

It seems that Shihan Gong's 60 men kumite will take place in Japan on November 18th. :)
Argh, too short notice to plan anything... :(

In Ashihara Karate (AKI), we only test until sandan! The complete syllabus can be viewed on www.ashiharakarate.org

Osu,

I met with Shihan Gong Han yesterday, he looked in terrific shape and was in great spirits; we talked for a little while and he is definitely very, very excited with his coming visit to Japan and his planned 60 men kumite!
He is also a little bit wary and is certainly not discounting the event: he trained very seriously for it.

The format will be 60 x 1 min fights with a short water break every 10 fights. It was unclear if his opponents would be replaced to make a full minute in case he KOed them.

I wished him good luck, and regretted that his kumite was so near and did not allow me to plan for accompanying him to Japan.

Shihan Gong told me that a video of it will be posted on the net; I'll make sure I get the link for all of you to enjoy. :)

OSu,

Over the week end, two females from the Shanghai dojo placed first and second in the heavy weights in the tourney in Japan.
(Kyokushin Union; not sure what tourney it was)

Shihan Gong's ordeal is today.

Perhaps Hasegawa Shihan's own event?

Luck won't help him now but all the preparation he has done ...;) But wishing him well though!

The tournament's name was "The 10th Ladies All-Japan.
That is the first of the three qualifying events for women in Japan who wish to fight in The 3rd Rengokai Cup. The other two are All-Japan (men) this December and All-Japan Weight (men/women) next Summer.

I actually bought the whole collection last summer and re-read it all...
In the last hundred years, nothing has changed in geopolitics... Every evil of misdeed that TinTin set out to impede or correct is still going on big time!

I learned a lot from spiderman comics ;)

As my karate skills increased over the years I hit the streets in my costume to fight crime!

In all seriousness, here's a pro MMA fighter named Ben Fodor that's kind of a celebrity crime fighter here in the Seattle area: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sulY-hvzoVs

He's actually undefeated in his amature and pro fights...my old sparring partner fought him for his first fight when he only had 2-3 weeks of grappling training  which isn't a bright idea.

Worst case, I'll find out when I am back in China by the end of the month. :)
