It's a story of a teenager who kills his parents and sent to a prison at the age of 17. In the prison he learns a bandoryu karate, which doesn't exist in real life. Its style is very similar to kyokushin and the teenager's name is "Ryo Narushima" like "Ryu Narushima" in kyokushin.
At the start in the prison, he gets bullied and raped but he soon gets addicted to bandoryu karate and gets strong.

When he gets out of the prison he participates in bandoryu tournaments and fae much bigger guys like a character based on hajime kazumi. Later he gets introduced to a fighting organisation like K-1.. and fights and lives like crazy..

I've just found some of its chapters, very interesting. But the manga is very violence and has a very dark tone.

Yes, it's a bit bloody and crazy but the manga has its own tastes and i think it's cool.
I woyldn't recommend it to younger children though, or female. It's a men's comic.

Masato? But Naoto Sugawara is supposed to be a heavyweight so i guess they're changing things a bit. Who's playing Rangsan by the way? And Seiten Taisei?

Masato will probably get a very cute japanese actress to play Sugawara's wife. That lucky bastard (lol)

Well.....to be honest, the character setting of the movie is very disappointing.

Yuen who acting as Narushima Ryo is 178cm, while Masato is only 174cm

Also if you look at the picture above, those who are acting as Banryukaikan have no karate feel at all.

Not as lucky as he most definately is in real life, with the best part of his fanbase being beautiful girls and all.

In the original japanese comic, Sugawara's girlfriend is inspired by former Miss Japan Fujiwara Norika, who is a famous actress in Japan. In the comic they even recreate some shots taken from her shashinshuu (it is ehhhh....a kind of literature).

OSU!

have to say, i'm loving the manga series. definately on the dark and twisted side, but thats one of the reasons its so entertaining. as far as the movie goes, i think the casting (judging by the extras and masato as sugawara) is going to make for a horrible movie, which is a shame, as it has such potential for a live-action or animated film.

I LOVE this manga, I even took my name from it, (I believe that Shamo means fighting rooster, is that correct?). But I always felt that Sugawara is a mixer of different real-life caracters like Kazumi, but also Filho, for the brazilian kick that Sugawara displayed at the beginning. Mochizuki is like Matsui (in a way I think), and I believe that Kurugawa was Mas Oyama, but I'm not so sure, since I just learned that he wasn't the founder of Banryukai, any one else have any idea of character inspiration?

Yes, Shamo does mean rooster....went to a restaurant that specializes in shamo last month with my wife...good stuff, a little firmer than normal chicken, but tasty none the less!

I have no idea about Kurugawa, but Mas Oyama seems to be the founder of Banryukai and his brother, head of the "black dogis". The founder looks like the young Oyama and his dark brother like the old. I think this splitting an awesome idea.

Osu! Mochizuki is modelled after Kazuyoshi Ishii. Kurogawa is based in Kenji Kurosaki. Naota Sugawara is based in the beginning in Norichika Tsukamoto, but also in Hajme Kazumi, Francisco Filho and (why not) Masaaki Satake. The founder of Banryukai, Daito Rissin, is modeled after Sosai Oyama. The concept of a brother, who acts in shadows, can be based in (again) in Kenji Kurosaki, cause some people say it's kenji kurosaki was the fighting man and Sosai Oyama the "symbol or image" of kyokushin.

PS: Sorry by the poor english.

osu! Some of these info i get in the article about shamo in wikipedia shamo. Kenji Kurosaki is the co-founder of Kyokushin with Sosai Oyama. He fights in Thailand versus Naks Muay (Thai Boxers). (I posted the video of this fight some time ago.). He left IKO in 1976.
Ah! about Tsukamoto. Look this picture of Sugawara: http://img61.onemanga.com/mangas/00000412/00000030/13.jpg
and this photo of tsukamoto: 1_3_boy02 pictures from sports photos on webshots (http://sports.webshots.com/photo/1078218782046106500BsdIrb)

I've been looking for a karate manga for a while, and since this reading this thread I checked Shamo out. To be honest I am of two minds about it.

On one hand, the depiction of karate and of fighting in general is excellent, as is the artwork. Some of the double-page images of tobi geris in particular are of such high quality that I've considered setting them as my desktop wallpaper.

On the other hand, almost everything in between the fights is pretty awful - the last straw for me being when the "hero" rapes his rival's girlfriend in an attempt to get his rival to fight him. Extremely unpleasant and quite unneccesary IMO.

Well Chris Ed,
I agree that Shamo isn't for everyone, but in my view, the actions that define Ryo aren't unnecessary, they help us to see who he is and why he does things. I think that they justify the use of martial arts in the ''street'' context because of the ''urban'' jungle scene.

I think the interesting thing in Shamo is that you can't symphathize with Ryo, but nonetheless you partly identify with him just because he is the main protagonist and you follow his story.
