Came across this in a copy of "Young Magazine", that was sitting on my co-workers desk (manga)
Shokoshi = little prince...
Looks like it is more of a K-1 type of background....

Thanks Vapor-san, would you be able to tell us the story of the Manga briefly?

Let me look through it a little bit, as it is the first time for me to see this. I believe that it is also out in a paperback book series, in addition to the feature that it gets in the comic book (which has 5-10 different stories from different mangas compressed into each issue)

This manga is pretty funny. It is about a karate club of a poor ranked university in Tokyo.
Remarks: there are two gaijin in the karate club, 1 Brazilian and 1 Russian
The Brazilian is gay and he tries to have sex with Kohinata, while the Russian is a Shemale.

Welcome to the forum fallingangels. Unfortunately giving sources of scanlations, fansubs and any other similar copyright breaking activity is against the rules on K4L. Although if you were to activate PM, there is a chance that some helpful person would contact you with some informal pointers were to look.
But for now, why dont you head over to the introduction forum and introduce yourself?

Well, in my view, Shamo is still the premier Karate manga! Long live Ryo Narushima!!! The Devil of the Orient!

Shamo is pretty good at first, but when Ryo Narushima has gone to China and practicing those 'supernatural martial art', for me, it makes this manga much worse. It not 'practical' anymore.
But 'Karate Shokoshi Kohinata Minoru' still ... you know... the same as ever.

I agree that the move to chi was a little over the top in my taste aswell, but I really dig that they gave a spot to Chinese martial arts aswell.

For those interested in googleing "Karate Shokoshi Kohinata Minoru": Shokoshi can also be transscripted as Shoukoushi...
About Shamo:
I liked the part in china, though it's different from the rest, of course... What irritates me is that after Ryo's return to Japan, he seems to have forgotten the chi-stuff he learned, now focusing on MMA?! And the drawings are different, too...
I read Shamo up to vol.23, and I'm eager to read on and see the "black dogis" in action!

Well, Baki is quite good at its beginning. But the newest one is extremely bad taste...and absolutely too over. The absolute MUSCLE power.
I think you better try Kohinata Minoru first and you'll find that Baki isn't that good, anyway I still buy every issue of Baki though.
Another manga that is quite (just 'quite') good is 'Holyland' but its art work is just so-so.

lol, thanks !
Anyone out there familar with the manga called B Reaction? It's pretty much a Karate to MMA with some old school Japanese Martial Arts, it's a young hearts funny type of manga, but still worth watching.

'B reaction' is quite good but since the first volume I have not yet seen the second one, wait for such a long time.
The art work is quite good (girls are pretty sexy and good looking though).
Another manga which is good but it is about Roman Era (but exactly about martial art) called 'Cestvs' (pronounce as 'Ces-Tus'...I also do not know why the writer uses 'V' instead of 'U')

OK, having had a look at Karate Shokoshi Kohinata Minoru, I think its pretty good. The authors are obviously familiar with kyokushin or some derivative.
I really like it. (I have not gotten as far as to the gaijins entering the dojo though :-)
Another manga like it, although slightly more comical in nature, and with more trad Manga artwork, is "Full contact" フル・コン. But it is fairy new and has not started going anywhere yet. It is still just the hero learning basic punches and worrying about minor bullies at school.
Same basic story, wimp get into karate by accident and turns out to be a unpolished martial art genious.
History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi, is a fun one too. More (much, MUCH, more) comedy than realism though. Same basic story as the above. However after a while it turn into more martial art superpower manga than a martial art manga.
Dont like Shamo. Graphically and fighting realistically it one of the very best. but the "hero" is just such a bastard that I dont like it. Its more like following the progress of a villain, than the hero.
I like dark manga/anime, but I like to be able to atleast sympathize with the main character, not hoping that one of his opponents kills him soon.

Oh, that's the funny karate manga by Baba Yasushi.
I read this regularly on-line. It's about the Second Karate Club from a Reinan a fictional sports university. The style's named "Kaburagi-ryu" school of contact knockdown karate. They use gloves sometimes, lots of kumite.
The gaijin's name is Pedro Barboza, a gay brazilian BJJ purple belt. But I'm pretty sure there's no she-male gaijin character in the story. One of the main characters is Mutou Ryuuji, a born genius fighter and the inspiration for the main character, Minoru.
Perhaps reading this manga re-awakened my interest in karate? :D I think it's a work of fiction that depicts facts with absurd and irreverent humor, pretty much like seinen manga.

I dunno, some content's kinda too strong for US audiences.
In the States the standard/tradition has been set by DC, Marvel, et al. They try adhere to moral, ethical and sometimes patriotic values. (nothing wrong with that, it's a form of popular art after all).
In japanese manga, gay/crossdressing characters are not uncommon (check Urusei Yatsura, Ranma1/2, InuYasha).

Yeah its a great series, i've read both Karate Shoukoushi Kohinata Minoru and Full Contact in scanslation, since i cant find legal versions where i live :(...
Those 2 series actually helped getting me interested in Karate :)

The profound badness of Full Contact actually made me die a little inside. Karate Shoukoushi Kohinata Minoru, on the other hand, is actually really good, though sometimes it has parts which irk me. Pedro is definitely the best character.
Another series I like is Kotaro Makaritoru, which manages to mix together comedy, martial arts, and fanservice without being as painfully and unrelentingly stupid as History's Strongest's Disciple Kenichi. Or as poorly drawn. Plus, one can watch as the author develops a fascination with Judo and karate, progressing from just using it as a vague to motive behind the comedy to focusing on it in a serious and well researched fighting manga fashion.
As for Shamo... Well, it's like a bizarro Ashita no Joe that's about The Deadly Karate wherein every character is an asshole. It's not fun or interesting or exciting, and it doesn't even have the trainwreck factor of HSD Kenichi that makes that readable, so it's just tedious and ugly.
Oh no I have revealed that I am a huge nerd

Dunno, i dont think Full Contact was that bad... as for Kotaro, i read the 1st chapter and all i could think was WTF? + i dont really like the art style, but i guess its all up to personal taste

"Tough" is a decent martial art manga, although It cannot decide if it is a realistic martial art or borderline superpower martial art style manga. Basically it is about a guy fighting his way through bizarre "anything goes" tournament.
In my mind that is the draw of "Karate Shokoshi Kohinata Minoru". It stays realistic, and does not flip out into secret superpower magical technique storylines.
One tip is to check out "Holyland". It is about a wimpy guy reluctantly turning into a streetfighter, picking up moves form different sources (boxing, karate, judo etc) as he goes along. It is pretty good

Agreed Holyland is good
Also check out All-Rounder Meguro a very realistic MMA Manga Where one of the main charecters has a Traditional Karate Background
