I hadn't seen that kick until i started looking for / at tournament fights.

There are a few vids around of a russian guy who uses it with devastating results.

It is good to watch, and crushingly effective when it lands right, but i can't help but think it is really only a tournament kick.

That is too say, that if you used it in a 'real life' street situation, you wouldn't want to miss because you end up on the ground at your opponents feet. A miss would mean being left prone at the feet of someone who is now REALLY mad at you because you just tried to take his head off

I think it would also be a kick that one wouldn't use with multiple opponents, as even if you land it right the first time, you would then be lying prone at the feet of his mates, who are REALLY mad at you because you just knocked out their mate.

So, great kick to watch, tough when it lands right, but not one i would have in my self defense top ten list.

It is pretty much a competition only technique. Someone once wrote here on the forum that shin-kyokushin is thinking about adding a rule that gave penalties to fighters that used this kick and missed -just because currently can be used safely with the knowledge that the fight will be restarted if the kick misses, no matter how bad a defensive position the kicker is in.

I hope they do!

Osu Martin! I totally agree. I was telling my brother the other day how stupid it is that the missed kicker ends up in similar positions as someone who got sweeped and yet the opponent does not gain any points for getting into the position of attack.
