I'm learning kyokushin and BJJ (no gi).

I was talking with a friend about the difference between Kyokushin and BJJ in term of cardio. My friend was sure that if you can do 15, 2 minutes fight in kyokushin, you are able to do the same in BJJ.
Unfortunately, it's not true at all! BJJ is so different than kyokushin...
When your opponent is leaning on you, you have to deal with all his weight. No gi BJJ is very dynamic: you are always moving to find a position in which you can submit your opponent. With all the sweat, it can be hard to make and keep your submission moves. Finally, when your opponent tries to submit you, you are wasting a lot energy to avoid submission.

If you want more information, please feel free to ask.

For information:
My teacher is a black belt in BJJ, Brazilian Top Team.

Yeah i know that. I felt the same when I began training Brazilian Ju-jutsu(Judo).

grappling and standup requires two distinctly different kinds of cardio.
Neither is better than the other, they are just different.

That's interesting. If you asked me to choose 1hr rolling or 1hr kyokushin kumite I'd choose BJJ (even gi-less). Having said that it depends on the style of each. I'm light so I play a real dynamic game on the ground so if I meet another lightweight with the same style it's insane & we exhaust ourselves but if I'm rolling with heavy people it's not so bad. Same with Kyokushin if you're fighting someone who won't let up then it's shattering but if you can dance a bit and find time to relax you can go much longer. Relaxing is definitely key to both!

This is an old thread but I thought I'd add my 2 cents.

Training in both BJJ and Kyokushin, I TOTALLY agree with Martin H: grappling and standup require two distinctly different kinds of cardio. What they do have in common is that good pacing and technique in either makes best use of your energy reserves.

When I walk out of one class, dripping with sweat, I often think this must definitely be the tougher cardio workout. That is, until I walk out of the other style a few nights later! :D

They are both great workouts!
