I have the job of organising the first of a series of female only fight events in the first half of 2007 in Wellington, NZ. We're calling it S.A.W - Sisters At War!
Who are "we"? We are 4 fighters from 4 cities and 4 different fighting backgrounds in NZ & Oz. We were inspired by the quality of fighting we saw in Tokyo recently & would like to see girls in our region aspiring to bigger things than what's available to them at present. "We" include Mandy Stewart, Australia's first ever female MMA champion.
After the Wellington event there will be similar events in other parts of NZ and Australia culminating in a 'championship' event at the end of the year. Don't wait for S.A.W. to run an event closer to home if you hope to qualify for a shot at the big event! You will need to compete several times.
The first few events will be fairly low key and run in local dojos. The purpose of these events is to give women a regular event to motivate them to develop their fighting skills, broaden their horizon, meet some people and have a great time! Fighters from anywhere in the world are welcome. We'll do what we can to host you and show you our great countries!
The rule set (available via a new website coming soon) is basically mixed martial arts but don't stop reading if you're not into MMA! We're looking at 2 x 5 min rounds. Win will be by KO, TKO, or by submission. However, because these events are about experience a submission won't mark the end of the fight but, should a fighter score 3 subs more than their opponent, the fight will be stopped. If there's no win as above the fight will be a draw.
Because MMA is in it's infancy in NZ & because women's MMA is virtually non-existent we're happy for women to fight their own style if it fits within the ruleset. For example if a Kyokushin girl wants a pure Kyokushin fight we'll try to find her a fighter who wants the same. Same with Judo, BJJ, kickboxing etc. If you fight one style & you want to see how you'll go against another style we'll try to make it happen! We'd like to think this will encourage an interest in other styles, cross training & the growth of women's fighting.
If you are interested and want to know more please email info@sistersatwar.co.nz
I'll post a link to the website once it's up.
