While I was in Japan, my wife went to see a Kabuki theater performance with her friend (they got the tickets before my flight itenary was fixed....and it was not possible to cancel, or get me a seat!!)
Anyway, so they are in the theater....and looking around at the displays and what not...and they run across a craftsman, who hand carves onto small wooden blocks...
Most are names or good luck style pieces....selling for a few thousand yen....nothing fancy.
Well, smack in the middle of it all, they came across one that was different....one that was special.
The craftsman explained to them, that for an upcoming anniversary/memorial he had been commissioned by kyokushinkai to engrave a special one...
He was given a hand written paper, that Oyama Sosai had personally written, and based his carvings to make an exact replica of the penmanship of Oyama Sosai....
My wife instantly picked it up and told the craftsman that she was taking it home....(all the way shaking her head in disbelief at the price tag ---about 150 times more expensive than the typical ones...)
So, I am the proud owner of this gem, thanks to my wife (who was the one that encouraged me to start kyokushin in the first place!!!
