Man, I see in Duck Brigade the strongest and smartest ducks who've ever lived. I see all this potential, and I see squandering. Gosh darn it, an entire generation squacking at park benches, following old maids; slaves to WHITE BREAD! Advertising has us chasing loafs, wading ponds we hate so we can eat shite we don't like. We're the middle fowls of history, ducks. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off.

Quack,
I'll have to pass this time.
As it is 40 years ago that I've faked my own death, people are still talking about me.
So i will be avoiding crowds for a while....I'm considering the possibility of taking plastic surgery (maybe transform myself into a swan or something).
Or maybe i'll just stop singing........

I'd love to lend you a hand but I am not familiar with the term MANKY...

vapor

Well - we don't just learn karate in this forum, do we...
Usage: The term was borrowed by Scots English in the 16th century as "mank." Since expanding more broadly through Britain it has accumulated the common adjective suffix "-y." Though neither the Oxford nor Cambridge dictionaries list "mankiness" as the noun, given the productivity of this suffix, there is no reason not to apply it should the occasion arise.

Suggested Usage: You might not want to use this word on a job interview but it does allow you to give "dirty" and "used" a rest down at the pub. "Now, now, don't cry. Use my tissue. I'm afraid it is a bit manky. Sorry." It can also replace "out of whack" and "broken" without forcing you to the more cerebral "defective": "If you don't like this wine, your palate is manky." "Manky" provides you the luxury of a choice of unoffensive alternatives in referring to lame or disabled limbs: "a game leg" or "a manky arm" (or vice versa).

Etymology: Old French manc, manque via Scottish. Originally from Latin mancus "maimed." The underlying root is *man-ko- "maimed in the hand." Akin to English "mangle" and Sanskrit manak "little." The root, man- is the same as that in Latin manus "hand," which appears in numerous English borrowings: "manual (by hand)," "manipulate," "manuscript," "manicure," etc. (Thanks to Sabra Jones for bringing this Scottish lexical nugget to the attention of the rest of the English-speaking world.)

YouTube - Parrot Dancing and Singing (Snowball the Cockatoo) (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=1j_fxs8mUcQ)

seienchin

Snowball is a Sulphur Crested Cockatoo, a native (protected) bird from Australia. These guys are absolute clowns. I am lucky enough to live in the middle of a forest, and we often have them playing and bathing in our back garden. Their mating displays involve acrobatics in the air, and as the pair start to think they'll make a go of it, they actually start tumbling and diving together. It is amazing to watch. Their raucous laughter is often the only alarm clock I need. Them and the kookaburras.

Whilst Snowball's dance looks funny, it is sad to see that people are still keeping these amazing birds in captivity. :(

I have an idea - maybe the duck brigade could bust Snowball out - birds of a feather, flocking together, and all that? Sound's like a plan:D

Lucy
10-21-2007, 09:21 PM
Awww im up for that lol! I think he might live in America though so it could be difficult to aid my feathered comrade :D I have heard that the cockatoo is considered a pest in its native land?! I think they are great. I recently visited an animal sanctuary and they had about 9 living there!

I have heard that the cockatoo is considered a pest in its native land?! I recently visited an animal sanctuary and they had about 9 living there!

They are noisy, in raucous, lads-at-the-pub kind of way. But it makes me laugh. :) They have been known to chew on houses (well, that's our fault for cutting down all their trees). :p But the main reason that they end up in refuges is that people put them in cages, and then discover that they can't stand the noise of a frustrated sulphur-crest. They are, as birds go, very intelligent, and they fly so far, and so fast, with such joy, that imprisoning them is very sad. :(
