It's 12:30 AM and I just got home. I was at the arena since 8 this morning.... :P

Today was long but FANTASTIC. There were some truly great matches.

Valeri Dimitrov dominated every match he fought. In the second round he won by ippon (jodan hizageri if memory serves) in 9 SECONDS. By the far the fastest ippon kachi so far.

Of the Japanese fighters, unfortunately Yasumoto-senpai from my dojo lost in the 1st round, but his match went three rounds and it was really tough and a close call. Of all the Japanese fighters I find Tsukamoto-senshu the most fun to watch. He's just electrifying, watching him in action.

The ladies' fights were really inspiring too. These chicks are tough!!

Watching the supporters in action was a thing in itself. The Lithuanian cheer section was pretty sizeable and they were all wearing matching green jerseys and they cheered SO LOUDLY for their fighters. It was really inspiring. Other fighters with good support groups came from Spain, Russia, and Bulgaria.

As one of the tournament's five interpreters, my job is "senshu gakari". Throughout the tournament my job was to stay by the white side and help prepare the fighters for their fight, and also interpret whenever the fighters and staff needed to communicate with each other.

It was BEYOND EXCITING to be so close to all of these Shinkyokushin greats. They were all so courteous and friendly. What really surprised me the most was how most of them didn't seem even the least bit nervous before their fights. Cool as cucumbers. How do they do it???

If I go to sleep now I can get five hours before I have to get up and it do it all over again. Tomorrow's going to be amazing!

(And if anyone here is going to be there tomorrow, please say hi to me! I'm wearing a hot pink "interpreter" bib so I'm pretty hard to miss :P )

yes. it sounds like a non-japanese champion. ti seems to me nesteenko does a good. i´ll hope he kicks imbras out. he is a kind man, but has a very poor fighting style...only pushing...

i´m wondering about suzuki. he went out against gudauskas. also the spirited kenta mori. the japnase squad pays for their very high age... ;-(

hope dimitrov will be the champ. he is a true champ! no other. never see a fighter on this level. he is so much better than all former world champions.

thanks to all, who give us first hand reports here at the forum. domo arigato.

I just read in a Japanese shinkyokushin community that Tsukakoshi's Hidari gedan mawashi geris were very effective in this event.(I asked them if the decisions were biased or not so i'll edit this post when i hear back from them)

I'm sure more updates are coming soon from others who went to see it.

Okay a guy replied to my question.

"In semi-final Valeri and Tsukakoshi, they both were standing strong but Tsukakoshi was looking better with Hidari gedan mawashi geri. The final was definitely Tsukakoshi's. Tsukakoshi almost gave Donatas a wazaari, and I think it was a clear win by Tsukakoshi. I would have given it 5-0 to Tsukakoshi."

Again this is a comment from japanese so it may be biased a little. Osu.

StarKodama

All I can say is WOW.

Where to begin?! There were some awesome fights yesterday...

One thing I can say is that there is nothing fishy about Tsukagoshi getting the championship. I was rooting for Imbras myself, but Tsukagoshi just kept hammering away with gedan mawashigeri and Imbras was quite obviously weakened. It was a unanimous decision and when all four judges raised the red flag the entire house went absolutely INSANE. Everyone on their feet screaming. I'll never forget it.

Veronika's fight was similar, her first round against Misaki Sato was a hikiwake but towards the end of the second round Veronika got a second wind and dominated. When she won all the Europeans in the crowd went wild. I was rooting for her all the way and when she won I was actually moved to tears. :( It was an amazing victory, she earned it 100%.

Suzuki Kunihiro's loss was kind of a shock, especially to the Japanese in the audience, but in my opinion Darius was just hitting a lot more and a lot harder. It was a real nail-biter of a match, though.

My favorite Japanese fighter is still Tsukamoto though, all the way. He's electric in the ring and just so cool and confident, both on the mat and out of it. Really personable and friendly too.

The guts award goes to Mimiko Fukuda. During her match against Margarita, a Lithuanian fighter, she got punched in the face and was KOed. The doctor came and when they showed her on camera her face was all bloody. She was carried out on a stretcher and the match was put on hold while the next match took place.

Somehow Fukuda was able to continue fighting. She won the match(although to be honest it I would have called that round a hikiwake) and the crowd went wild. I was just impressed that she was able to come back and put up one hell of a fight after such a short time.

The match will be aired on Japanese TV this Saturday in a condensed 1-hour special. (I think.) Next month it'll be on one of the Japanese sports channels. I don't know when the DVD will be released... but I'm definitely buying it!

--
As for my part, not only watching but being a part of this event easily ranks up there as one of the best things I've ever been a part of or one of the most inspiring things I've ever seen in my life. As interpreter I was always on hand. I was sitting literally right in front of the fighters as they did tameshiwari, sitting next to them as they waited for their fight and cheering for them from the sidelines. I was there for Imbras' press interview and even watched him hand over his little cup of pee to the doping officials afterwards. :o

I've done all of my karate training in Japan. Watching my senpai or even the fighters at the All-Japan tournaments, of course their fighting is impressive, but I'm so much bigger and taller than they are that it seemed I could never be like them. This was my first time to watch gaijin fight, and seeing Veronika and Edit Abraham and all the others in action was more inspiring than I can put into words. Honestly I can't WAIT to put this new inspiration into practice at kumite class tomorrow!!

I took pictures that I'll post later. If anyone has any specific questions I'd be happy to answer! Osu-JP1

It was. If memory serves, Tsukagoshi just used the same technique he used against Imbras, which was to hammer away at the legs. As a result Valeri wasn't moving as well as usual, he was obviously tired. Still put up a great fight till the end, though. :) Osu-JP1

That's right, he's one of the Hungarian seconds. (If you look closely you can see that he's holding his blue second sash in his hand.)

He's not actually standing on the stage, but he is breaking the rules by standing at all. :P (Seconds are also not allowed to so much as touch the stage during the fight, but of course everybody breaks that rule!)

Dear Atilla-san,

Hi and welcome to the forum!

I don't have my tournament pamphlet with me so I don't remember details, but I do remember your friend Djefini. I thought she fought very well but it just wasn't enough. :( She fought really hard, though. And looked good doing it! She's really pretty.

I'm sorry, I don't remember Muniz-senshu though. :(

I don't have my tournament pamphlet with me so I can't say for sure, but I'm pretty sure Brian Jakobsen didn't sign in as a competitor for Day 2, meaning he was eliminated in Day 1. Sorry I can't help more than that...

Sorry, I've not even heard of it. I train in Yokohama, not at the Sou-Honbu in Tokyo so I'm kinda out of the loop... It certainly sounds interesting though!

Erens-san:

When Solly Soko entered the ring, Iinuma-shihan, who was sitting next to me, turned to me and said "This guy's REALLY good." And he was! He started the fight really strong but if memory serves he wasn't really able to maintain that momentum till the end, so he lost his first match. :( The shihan was shocked. I guess he just had a bad day, but I'm excited to see more from him in the future!

DavidShinRicci-san:

I'm sorry, I don't remember a Canadian male fighter, but I seem to remember a French Canadian female fighter..? She was very sweet and fought hard but lost by ippon under kind of mysterious circumstances. During the fight she just kind of collapsed and it looked like she was clutching her wrist. They showed the replay a few times but still I'm not sure if she was hurt by her opponent's punch to the stomach, or if she hurt her wrist or something while punching her opponent.

Greedy-san:

The Lithuanian support squad was absolutely AMAZING, way more spirited than the Japanese even though the Japanese outnumbered them by 1000 to 1. The liberal use of airhorns was a nice touch. =D Every time one of their own won they went absolutely NUTS. They were all really friendly too!

georginio1977 -san:

Melekiadis-senshu did indeed perform really well! His seconds were very spirited with their cheering too. :D

Good to see Yamada do well, he had a titanic fight aganist GB's Kenny Jarvis in Belgium this year and lost on boards, he was very very strong though..... although Kenny's legandary low kicks did do some damage by the way Yamada limped the rest of the day.

Sounds like a fantastic torunament though, seems like Tsukakoshi stuck to bread & butter techniques and pure strenght to from what I hear desrevedly take the title.

Good to see the Russian fghtere getting to the last 8 in Shevchenko, Grigoriev and the strongest fighter in my view Nesterenko. Also I hear Khudiakov was excellent and he may have the claim to being number one lw in te world at the moment. I was also pleased to see Lithuanina get good places, this was the first time someone from this excellent Kyokusnin country amde it to the last 8 and one made it to the final. Would have loved to see Tsukamoto do it, sounds like he went out by one board, according to my sources he was awesome too. Also a massive well done to Jimmie Collin for reaching the last 32 and getting an ippon against one of the Japanese fighters !

Only 4 weeks to the IKO 1 version, come one Lechi !

P.S. Hi Bloke, hows tricks. Hope you are keeping well, bad news about the British this year.

nothing to do with the abilities of other fighters. never would say this! read my former states - the man from costa rica is also a strong fighter. brians lost at et 2006 where simply a lucky punch - not more. :)

kimkong told us, brian was the better man at first round against espinoza. not more. at this time, i think kim is an experienced fighter for himself, and he could say if or if not the result was ok.

The tournament was amazing. Great organization and atmosphere. The level of the fights were extremly high. There are no longer any really easy fights in the WT for anyone.

I have to say that I was hoping for a more technical world champion but Tsukakoshi truely was the best these two days. Vasili Kudiakov and Romas Neterenko were the two that fighters I enjoyed the most. Some fighters didn't live up to the expectations and some exceeded them by far!

After the sayonara party the part continued in Roppongi and many fighters ended up in the same place, it was a crazy night :-P

The demo by 66 year old shihan Najiri (spelling?) was so cool. I wish I will be in that shape when I reach that age.

Two short news about the world tournament.

1)After the heated battles of the 9th world tournament, doping tests were carried out for specified placing fighters. The chairman of the doping committee, Narito Shihan, declared that "transgressor were not found". Fighters followed Budo Karate Seishin and fought fairly. There were no mistakes in the impressions that they gave.

2)Tsukagoshi Takayuki Senshu victory celebration
To celebrate the retainment of the prestige of the Karate motherland by Tsukagoshi Takayuki Senshu at the 9th world tournament with the strongest ever group of overseas fighters, a celebration party will be held. This will be a large party with also people outside the organization. Date and Time: Heisei 20 (2008) 2/17 14:00 Venue: Grand Prince Hotel Akasaka.

Ossu!!!
My name is Adriano Hernandez from Uruguay and I fought in the 9th tournament in Tokio.
I lost to Andjez Milevskij by decision. We was stronger than me but the fight was great. It is my second world tournament, last one i lost to the Russian Fighter Vitaly Kolodiahny. All the fights were great and the seminar in mount Fuji was even better.
The best thing I remember was when in the night of the second day of the tournament we went dancing with Tsukamoto Sensei and all the famous fighters... I coudnt believe I was drinking, speaking and dancing with my Idols... It is just great!!!

More stories to come...

Were some of them still fighting the next day or not? If they were, wow...

Welcome by the way! :)

The second day was the last day of the tournament so they did not have to fight again. ALso went with us Shihan Hiroshi Nanri, a former Uchi deshi from Sosais years, a very charming person... a strong small baldy senior kyokushin.

Nice to meet you too.

Who was in this WT, what do you think about the brazilian Rafael CArdoso ?

He defeated Christian Christianssen in his first fight. In second, twice against Tsukamoto. Rafael gone good. Lost by decision.

What do you think ?
