View Full Version : Giving up drink for the torney
I really like a drink, especially a glass of red on rest days of a beer after training, now I'm trying to loose weight so I already know it's a no no but in general how long before your tourney do you give up that which we hold so dear?
Ooh, I'd like to hear an answer to that. My guess is at least a couple of weeks, when you're working on cardio. I was completelly dry for a month or so, only to get smashed two days before my first (and only) national championship. It turned out not to be such a great idea.

I would do probably a minimum of 2 weeks myself. A month would probably fare better. After the tourney though...and I mean literally after my match. Better have a couple pints ready!!

We used to spend 3 months on the dry and it did us no harm. Also it was really easy to get legless the night of the tournament.

I used to spend 2-3 months dry while preparing for a tournament. It wasn't easy but training that hard with alcohol in my system just didn't work well for me. The sayonara party was a different story tough... 3-4 drinks and I was out :D
Osu!
After seeing George Foreman walk to the ring with a Big Mac in hand, I've wondered who would be the first to show up with a fifth of Jack Daniels...
I'm not much of a drinker, so going without isn't an issue for me. I have seen guys compete after a night of much excess though, and been amazed that they could see, much less win. I think it's all up to you, TMD. How well do you do with, and how well without?
Osu!
Some athlethes claim to perform better when slightly tipsy. I would not advocate that.

i think as long as your not stupid about it, i don`t see alcohol as a problem right up to the tournament...in moderation!
also, i don`t think it`s a bad idea to have a beer a couple of days before to help you relax!....only my opinion of course!

In my youth (a long time ago) I was at a tournament where also Peter Smit (R.I.P.) was competing.
In the dressing room he asked me to hold his glass of beer while he was fighting.
After his fight he thanked me and went straight back to the bar.
(He won by KO btw)
Olrac I'm not really in the Peter Smit league - the guy could have fought for a World Tittle on crutches and still won! :D
MMMM I know I shouldn't drink but I like to drink, I've not been without it for more than a fortnight in the last 20 + years. I want to do well in the next few tourney though as I'm getting close to them being my last ones so I want to do perform as good as possible.
I have cut right back but am struggling to cut it out altogether.
And Bloke... if I go by your advise I'll be the designated driver for the Open as my tournaments 4 weeks after !

Get some codral Night and Day but make sure it is the stuff with pseudoehpedrine in it, not the crap they are trying to pass off these days as a substitute. You might have to convince the chemist that your not going to cook up some P but an adress and ID get around this. Two of the day pills about 2 hours before should pep you up. As far as I'm aware this is not an officially sanctioned event so a little bit of stimulant in the blood won't do any harm...

If this is a pro fight or had any banned substance list be careful, cold and flu stuff is notorious for having things which are baned in them :(
Best of luck for Saturday BTW :D
Still weighing it up Hasbeen - will let you know at K2 if it would be worth the trip!

tmd i think your the question is how much do you need to cut n how long do you have.
if weigth is not an probleme(some people are lucky, friend of mine used to step up for weighing wearing shoes and fully dress and still had no probleme:)) MODERATE drinking is not a probleme.let's say 2 or 3 drinks once a week doesnt sound like an issue to me.
and and before someone mention it same goes for the no bunk action before a fight ;)

I need to cut 10% of my body weight - 77 down to under 70 before end Nov so about 10 weeks ( did cut from 87 last year)
MODERATE to me is more like 2-3 a night though bud, 2-3 a week is a real struggle :(
As for the last point; sure I agree - right before a fight, otherwise the changing rooms would be a shambles :D
