On November 22, 2008 there will be a Shidokan Event at the Hyatt Hotel in Chicago. There will be an 8 man MMA Tournament for Welterweights (155-170lbs) and a 4 man Triathlon (bareknuckle, thai boxing, MMA) Tournament for Middleweights (170-185lbs). Prize money for the 8 man tournament is $10,000 winner take all and prize for the 4 man is $4,000 for 1st place and $1,000 for runner up. It is my hope that some karateka will respond to this as it usually kickboxers and mma fighters who enter. Go to Shidokan - The Triathlon of Martial Arts (http://www.shidokan.com). If any karate based fighters are interested please call Sensei Trammell at 404-605-0094.

The Shidokan Samurai Memorial takes place this evening. I'm heading up to cold Chicago today. Two my fighters are competing. Eric Heager (MMA) and Phil Sehenuk (Triathlon-knockdown, thai boxing, mma). Shonnie Carter will be fighting in a Triathlon tournament, Brent Weedman (2007 Shidokan World Open Middleweight Champ, Byakuren Nidan, and AFL MMA Champ) and a lot of other talent will be competing. Representatives of Canada, Germany, Costa Rica, and US will be fighting.
I'm still in search of more karate fighters to compete in Shidokan Shows. Out of the 18 fighters participating in this event, only a handful come from Karate organizations. I have to recruit from MMA/Kickboxing gyms. In order for contact Karate to grow and survive in the states, I hope martial artists will look beyond organizations and try to support each others events.

As our Dojo opens, and then grows, we will be looking for contact events, and we will certainly be in touch! (Shall we say 2010? :))

that will be awesome. i thank you for your interest in helping show full contact karate to the public. i ask that all dojos that have fighters to try and support. i have put on matches in the past and have even tried to get knock down only match ups for those who do not want gloved fighting or mma. my problem has always been getting other styles to support what we do. in america full contact karate is small and we have to come together if we want to have any growth. there are only a handful of karate tournaments in this country. for those who compete, they need to try and support all that they can.

Sorry to say it, dear KakatoOtoshi, but I don't know. Three times we have pushed back the opening day, and I am now sure we will have to do so again. :(
It is essentially a small space in a secluded area. Originally a two-car garage at the back of a friend's property, it has been left to fall into serious disrepair over the last twelve years.
I have been working to repair what I can, remove most of what I can't, and enlist the use of professionals (?) where needed. New wiring, plumbing and when it heats up again, I'll get on the roof to switch out some shingles, and change out a couple more windows. I've been cleaning out everything from old furnaces and water heaters etc to dead animals and asbestos.
Who knows when it will be ready? Maybe February or March? The fees will be reasonable, and the training will be different to what is available in the area. Because I have no real overhead (The water and electricity will be minimal), and the Dojo money will mostly be spent on repairs (Past, present and future) and equipment, I am in the enviable position of not having to make ends meet through charging a lot of money. Or being worried about losing members because the training is a little tough.
Initially, the training will focus on conditioning and lots of basic training. Day after day after day. Our foundation in Karate has to be better than the foundation of the building we are using.
Will it grow? I honestly don't know, but I do know that giving people the opportunity to train is a high priority for me. And I look forward to having many visitors from all over the world come by, and share this experience with me.

I am looking forward to reading about the opening of your new Dojo. Will you be the only instructor and what classes are you going to offer?

Well, we don't have any other senior members, so I guess it's a one-man-show right now. :)
Initially, just basic Karate training 3-4 times a week. Looking at adult men as the primary demographic. The space is small, so probably no more than a dozen members at any one time. And because I'm selfish, I'm looking for people to work with too. This is not going to be a situation where one person will stand up front, and not participate. I will be training too. After all, I'm not dead yet. ;)
One of the big pluses for me is that I can show up at any time of day, or night, and train without bothering anyone else. At home I have to be aware of which family member may be asleep, or who wants to watch TV, or do their homework. With this place, there is solitude!

So you get free elderly rehabilitation and charge them at the same time?

Shhhhhh..... Don't tell! I'm hitting them with the "Aged teacher" routine. I'll have them cooking meals and washing my car in no time! :D

Your beard will need to turn to some shade of grey or white to pull that one off though!
