Notice the kata. Resembles a compromise between modern and traditional kata.

Rumour has it that Shihan may be teaching on this years Sabaki Camp. I look forward to that, his teachings are always interesting and enlightening.

Osu! Kancho Higashidani has always been a great guy to train with. We are always iimpressed with his style. As a person, he is humble and very willing to teach.

The kata looks almost like a speed up taichi - it would be intersting to train with him, I'm sure he is verry knowledgeable.

The ending has some resemblance to the ending of kankudai... very good clip.. very interestingI don't know the kankudai, but you can also find the ending in nage no kata in Ashihara. Take down with ura nage, control the opponents head against your thigh, and hit him with shuto on the side of his neck.

At the Sabaki Camp 2008, Kancho Ashihara treated Shihan with the utmost respect - maybe not so strange, considering that Shihan was held in very high esteem ever since Kancho was a child. Shihan is linked to NIKO, but is otherwise apolitical. If you get a chance to be taught by him, take it.

Osu,
The kata that Higashidani shihan is doing is a transmission excercise, with influenses from tai chi and pakua.

osu... the kata is great... but it would have been awesome if its bunkai were also shown here... it looks like a person doing kung-fu in a karate gi... no fists, all open hand movements... lots of sabaki... really missing out the bunkai...
wasnt this master in the Japan team for the 1st world open tournament in 1975.. he was shown in fighting black kings doing really good jumping spinning kicks... isnt he the same person..??? osu...

I've attended seminars where he has demonstrated some techniques and combinations very unfamiliar to me, at very high speed. When he later demonstrates it in slow motion on a partner, you see that it is not just for show. They're wicked combinations, that can be very effective indeed.

As for the resemblance to kung-fu etc., Shihan has experience with Chinese martial arts.

A true master of the arts. Been on several training camps with him as a instructor. He never disappoints. He see´s all students, I was a blue belt 8th kyu the first time I had the previlige to train under him. We were doing Kihon and I was in like the 3d or 4th row back. Shihan sought out eye contact and in less then 5 seconds he moved his hands gestured to me and corrected my stance. Last september he showed us his kicking kata to practice kicks. I have it written down and its currently helping me loosen up that stiff left leg =) . If hes instructing on the Sabaki camp this summer then go sign up..

Osu,
I talked to Higashidani Shihan today. He is not going to the danish camp this year. He is in Singapore.
But he is going to have a seminar in copenhagen next month and he is coming to Sweden 5-6 september. (Send a mail to info@sabaki.se if you are interested to join the swedish camp).

Oh, that's a shame. :( Thank you for keeping us updated, though. Where in Sweden is this other camp?

Osu,
The camp will be in the north part, in Boden or Luleċ, (depending on how many that will come). Boden dojo have a limit for about 30 students and Luleċ dojo, can take a few more.

We tried some of these combinations when he taught at Sabaki Camp. Quite viscous, actually.

Uraken no kata

Osu, thanks. Nice movements with a familiar type of enbusen to the Ashihara kata. Anyone seen Makoto Hirohara's Shintaiikudo kata? Very similar in concept to this of Higashitani shihan.

When I first saw the Higashidani kata, I went to my book case and checked what Hirohara had in his book and then checked the dvd. Rather similar concepts. A pity when met Higashidani Shihan we did not delve into his kata - but that was around 2005 when we go together. Hopefully with my next visit to Denmark I can meet with him for some first hand experience into the concepts displayed in his "new" system.

If anything is worth using, then most certainly ... However, having seen Shintaiikudo, I am happy with what we doing and don't envisage changing anything. :) I have been fortunate that many of our senior instructors have backgrounds in other styles and we have been able to teach "extra" modules to benefit our students.
