Training in Japan

While on vacation (holiday to you, Europeans) in Japan last week I brought along my dogi and an introduction letter from my Branch Chief, the intent being to train Kyokushin a couple times. Well the first night I showed up it turned out that I screwed up and that night they were training at a satellite dojo, the second night at a different dojo didn't work out either cause it was a national holiday and no training. Well as the saying goes the third try was a charm. I met Yamaguchi Sensei and he was a very warm and kind man. After some pleasentries he bestowed on me a number of omiyage gifts, including a very nice jumper with the Kyokushinkai and Ichiegeki marks. Then the training commenced.
First thing I noticed was that things were more much more stringent in Japan. The OSU was loud and preceeded/followed with mannerisms that are common in Japan.
1. Yoroshiku onegaishimasu
2. Shitsurei shimasu / shimashita
3. Arigatou gozaimashita
Everyone should learn these if they intend to train in Japan.
The training iteself was intense. 2.5 hours of some gruelling kihon, ido, bagwork, and motodachi kumite. It wasn't a busy night, but there were 7 black belts which I wasn't used to. In all, it was an excellent experience and I can't wait until I get the chance to train again in Yamaguchi Sensei's dojo.
Big OSU to him and his dojo members!

Osu! Wonderful! I'm sorry to hear that you had troubles connecting at first. Please excuse my lack of knowledge, what does Motodachi Kumite mean?

Here's a picture...
![]() Motodachi means one person stays while the other people rotate around him. It basically translates into no break for a couple lucky folks. |
