Everybody knows the saying about that first step... this blog is to document the travel.
I practice kyokushin again after 20 years; I was once 3rd kyu & opted to start at white belt.
The first milestone is to re-earn my rank, then, of course to attain shodan. Let's see where this will take us in the end.
Expect much frustration hand in hand with a study in humility as the inner battles have but a clear outcome...
I entered the dojo in June of 2009 on crutches; we are now in November and I have mostly regained use of my legs: time to get cracking!

Goals 2010 - The big picture, overview - 11+1 Goals.
I've been doing quite a bit of homework that includes thinking about directions, ideas and possibilities for now and the future; time outs for me have always been privileged moments for planning and introspection; it is time to put it all together before calling the holidays a wrap.
My idea at first was to set up goals and post here those related to karate and training - it so happens that most are karate centric and I decided to list it all here:
1- Stay, remain injury free.
2- Stop smoking. Actually, this is now more like don't start smoking again you moron, not even one cig is allowed, ever!
3- Rise to top physical condition. a detailed post will explain and expand on that, but the general idea would be to be able to train with high class athletes and not be ashamed.
4- Simplify, clean up the clutter, remove distractions from my life to be able to focus.
5- Harden weapons to be able to deliver impact and power without injuring myself; harden targets and develop and master a few sharp weapons. I will expand that one later too.
6- Train to develop a powerful ibuki. Learn Sanchin kata and practice daily.
7- Keep a training log supported by a training plan with clear objectives and daily activities breakdown; weekly and monthly look backs, adjustment and corrections. Document routines, benchmarks and measures.
8- Round the world karate journey --- I mentioned that in the forum and have engaged in private discussions with forum members - The broad idea is sold to Mrs InChina, but as always, the devil is in the details... More on that later, it deserves a post of its own.
9- Learn about traditional karate - soft vs. hard, breathing, hardening, hips and inner movements, etc...
10- Earn BB by 50 - 1323 days to go so fitting in 1000 days of training will work on a Ross's routine of 4 days work & 1 day rest... I must say that working at validating the meaningfulness of that goal, it quickly appeared that the journey was more important than the destination (I know, this will sound like a massive platitude!) and that "by 50" was vain; however, I liked the sense of urgency the formulation implied, so I kept it as it is.
11- Find & choose "something" to learn or do in 10 minutes per day... Dent is writing a book, but I might learn a foreign language, develop my memory or play hold'em on internet...
+1- Start a company that will brand, export and distribute MA products and equipment... This one was a left brainer that did not pass the right brain screen (I am using a goal setting technology from my friend Jayne Johnson: the left brain lists the goals and the right brain prioritizes them... If you would like to know more, you can read what I have to say about Jayne's goals workshops.), in this case, that goal scored zero on the right side of the brain... but what the heck? I think I would like to own such a business so it may just be a matter of choosing better words to describe the activity. more on that later, maybe...

I'm intrigued Fred - looking forward to learning more about some of these.
And as for the karate trip around the world, I have two things to say: 1) AWESOME! I'd love to be able to do something like that, but its not in my cards at least in this stage of my life, and 2) I hope that this journey might bring you to my neighborhood, even if its only for a beer and a chat at the ATL airport. |

Concrete goals, but with room to move. I like it. Add in several goals that are connected to me personally, and I look forward to your journey even more. Literal and figurative. ![]() Osu! |
