Growing into the belt...
Posted 01-25-2010 at 09:58 PM by MilkManX

This past Saturday was the first time I truly felt like a Brown Belt. Everything just clicked. Sure I got tired at points but I knew what to do and was not lost. Sensei even showed the Brown Belts the Black Belt level kata and I didn't miss a beat not even knowing the kata beforehand. Now I fell I am ready to move forward and train for that next level.

I find it interesting that most students attach themselves to a belt as soon as they put it on following a test. I don't know how long you've had your brown belt but as you can see it takes awhile to grow into it and get accustomed to new techniques or likely a newer understanding and an advancing of old basic ones. As you slip on your new belt you are still the same person you were the day before and you will remain that person until you get some time in under your new rank. I usually shoot straight from the hip and while I don't look to insult anyone I sometimes rain on their parade a little. Telling someone what they want to hear is basically misleading them....that's bad. I've seen that get people hurt down the road.
When the student gets his new black belt and says "I'm now a black belt," I have to say:"no you're not, you are now a good brown belt." ![]() I think, by your blog entry that you see what I mean. Very good....that's called "learning." ![]() |
