Everybody knows the saying about that first step... this blog is to document the travel.
I practice kyokushin again after 20 years; I was once 3rd kyu & opted to start at white belt.
The first milestone is to re-earn my rank, then, of course to attain shodan. Let's see where this will take us in the end.
Expect much frustration hand in hand with a study in humility as the inner battles have but a clear outcome...
I entered the dojo in June of 2009 on crutches; we are now in November and I have mostly regained use of my legs: time to get cracking!

Throwing Things Away Terrifies Me
I am in the process of decluttering my life - yes, my whole life, but this is not the point here - I am actually following through on my goal number 4- Simplify, clean up the clutter, remove distractions from my life to be able to focus.
In fact, for the last hour, I have been moving things around; sure, I threw a few papers, used paper napkins and flat batteries that were in the space, but I am far from having filled up even one modest size paper basket; things that were on the floor are still on the floor, but at some other place! talk about efficiency!
What is going on here?
I believe I am terrified: the idea of getting rid of anything seems to freeze me with terror - I'd rather start smoking again! --- I don't know why, but I intend to blast through this fear and get the job done with courage and focus.
Does this happen to you too? I'd be interested to learn what you do about it when it happens...
I needed the break, back at it now, thank you for reading!
Osu!

What is it that scares you Fred? Are you afraid you are going to throw something away that you need later? I wish I could offer advice, but I've never really had this type of problem so I don't know how to help..

Thanks Sandman - I've pinned it down to the "maybe I'll need it later sort" & "the emotional one".
The first needs no mercy & the other a place to live. Sorted! ![]() In the end, these two + an amazing tendency of mine to put off the things I don't like doing, were also what created the clutter in the first place... ![]() Osu! |

My space at home stays pretty neat and organized, but I tend to generate a lot of clutter on my desk at work. At work the clutter just starts to pile up during periods of time when I'm really busy, and then once it gets to a certain point, I procrastinate about cleaning it up. Part of the problem is that some of the junk that accumulates is subject to "information security" procedures - things like test samples or production documents that have to be disposed of in a certain manner. That type of stuff annoys the hell out of me - "I have to fill out forms just to throw something away???!!!"
So I fight back by just leaving it laying on my desk ![]() |

I wish that I could help with some sage advice, but I'm in the same boat as you. My house is filled with clutter of things that I do not wish to release. I've got old water bills in my filing cabinet from 1996. Just recently, I decided to make a set of qualifications to allow these things to keep residence in my home. I asked myself "Is it replaceable? Could I go to a store and buy one if I needed to? Is it disposable? Would I miss it once it's gone?" With those qualities in mind, I have started working on cleaning up, and de-cluttering one shelf at a time. I haven't gotten very far.. but I am working on it.
