Mas Oyama's Complete Karate Course
I received this book several years ago. It's kind of a quirky time capsule of what Kyokushin may have been like back in the day. The chapter on modernizing shiai and techniques like booshi geri and tabacco geri which appear in the chapter before speak volumes about the time the book was compiled. Anyway, who are the people demonstrating the techniques and where are they now? Obviously, a young Sosai is depicted performing some technique. One of the other demonstrators looks like a very young Royama. Any info on the others?

Osu! Thanks for the feedback. Same book, different covers? I'm glad I only have one version. I'd be none too pleased if I bought the same book over and over again online.

I have Mas Oyama This is Karate book. Pretty cool. Great referance to the techniques you learn in class. Has some great ideas for sparring and some good warm up and training techniques also.

I was confused when I read the book because it talks about wearing body armour during kumite to "avoid serious injury". The impression I got was Oyama dojo was full-contact from the beginning.
Anyone have any ideas as to why the book is written this way? |

I think this may have stemmed from a time when the possibility of Knockdown being an Olympic sport was being discussed and the padding may have appeased some fears from the IOC - although this is merely speculation on my part.

Following that line of thought, it may have been not to scare off the mainstream public who were reading the book!
