Do you mean the start of all Katas (Non Formal) or just Pinan Ichi?

I cant come up with a bunkai for that. That, in my oppinion, is just the formal "bow in" so to speak, before the actual kata starts.

Iain Abernethy spoke about this at the weekend, but I don't remember much of it. Mostly because the acoustics were really bad and my hearing's not the best.
You are correct ksan in your description, but with different styles/organisations having variations, the list of bunkai is endless. Even going from fudo to uchihachi can be dropping your weight/protecting your groin, etc, etc. But really good choice of topic as it's rarely discussed, and if you hadn't mentioned it, I may not have not remembered it. Thanks. Osu! |

We often perform Kata using yes and no instead of a standard Kiai. Use Yes for an Offensive technique and no for an Defensive one. Everybody shouts No at the start of the kata as we have all been taught the same as Ksan has described.

One possible bunkai:
The purpose of the morote gedan barai during yoi can serve as a defense to a double lapel grab, either breaking the hands off (to be followed by a head butt), or can be used to leverage your opponent and manipulate their body into a more advantageous position to counter attack (reaching a hand behind their head and hiza geri to the face is my first impression for this). The move from fudo dachi to uchihachi-ji dachi to fudo dachi has approximately the same result as stepping into sanshin dachi. By kicking out the heels and drawing them back in you can tense your abductor muscles inside the thighs while gripping the floor, achieving the same groin protection provided by sanshin. I'm willing to wager that there are some other very good interpretations for this as well. Osu |

I remember using the 'yes/no' in kata, we havent used it for a long time now though! Great for building up motivation and spirit! Big "NO" for blocking, big "YES" for attacks/strikes. ![]()

Osu,
Sorry for the late post, just thought I'd throw in what I've been taught on this subject. We are taught it's a double wrist grab. By quickly forcing the hands up, the defended has all but neutralised the attackers hold since the attacker now has only the thumbs applying pressure to the defenders wrists. Additionally, the attackers wrists are now in an unnatural position. The defender now follows with a double descending tetsui onto the attackers exposed under-wrists (probably not a word, I'm referring to the palm side of the wrist, not the the back of the hand side), seeking the pressure points there. If the technique is performed with realistic determination, the attacker cannot sustain the grasp. One thing that also adds to the effectiveness of the technique is that as the defender forces his/her hands up for the initial break-hold, the attackers arms cross each other, making it even harder t maintain a hold. Thanks for the post Ninsho, that was an interesting interpretation. Last edited by Satori; 05-30-2007 at 12:36 AM. |
