Kihon sono Ichi
I have been trying to describe this kata to Seienchin. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I'm guessing that a video is worth a 20 page essay.
This morning I convinced my husband to come outside, and capture this kata on video. I performed it on the street in front of my house waiting for those quiet moments between cars. ( This is a Canadian tradition.. ask any Canadian kid whose played street hockey.) I was concerned about broken glass, and such so I'm wearing my Gator shoes. What an experience! Trying to do kata with sandals on my feet. I had to block out the feeling of them shifting around, and lift them up a little so that I could move my feet over instead of sliding my feet as usual. I did only Kihon Sono Ichi. Ni, and San just involve different blocks, and other height levels of Gyaku Tsuki but follow the same movement pattern. The first video is done at speed.
Kihon sono Ichi slowed down with the movements accented:
I don't think that this kata is the same as your Star Kata, Seienchin. Am I right? Last edited by kyokushin4life; 07-26-2007 at 07:43 AM. Reason: I couldn't embed a video into the posting so I put urls instead. |

There are lots of katas called kihon sono 1+ in different styles. Some goju schools use that name for what basically is identical to the taikyoku katas, but they just wont use the shotokan name :-)

I did see that other Kihon Sono ichi video on Youtube, Shokei Marcsui. I could find no identifying symbols to tell me which style it was.
I did a little bit of internet searching on that video, and found out that it comes from Brooklyn Dojo. From what I understand, this dojo teaches a mix of Tai chi, Kung Fu, and Oyama Karate ( Under Shihan Alfred DiGrazia, founder of Oyama Enomichi Karate; Brooklyn branch chief for World Oyama Karate Organization for over 20 years. He trained with Soshu Shigeru Oyama, Kyokoshin Karate’s fighting master and a student of Sosai Mas Oyama, the founder, who was taught by the founders of Shotokan and Goju-Ryu.) under the various Sensei/ Sifu available. This would make them part of the Kyokushin family, right? |

Osu
This is correct, WOK is one of the earlier offshoots of the original IKO (when sosai was still alive) Osu Ksan

![]() Thanks so much supergroup7 for going to the trouble to video this for us. Did the neighbours think you had lost the plot, or are they used to the crazy lady karateka by now? You are right, this is not the same as the "star-kata"...but I like your name of JuJi kata better for star kata, because it is not 5 points, it is 4, much more like "ju". I can see the similarities between them, but I don't think I have ever seen this kata done in Australia. would be interested to hear if any of the other Aussies in the forum are familiar with it. ![]() |

We do this kata from time to time. It's a good change. I think the fastest we have ever had was Sempai James Marlborough at about 4 seconds!
We use chudan punches instead of jodan though. Thanks for going out and making the video. Obviously you're not too bothered what the neighbours think!! I like that. Our instructor and branch chief used to go out and run to a park at the top of the road where he lives and then perform the "Tibetan rites" each day! Anyone familiar with these rites will understand that he must have got very odd looks, especially while doing the first set when you spin clockwise 21 times with your arms outstretched!!! Nice one Shihan, OSU! |

Suggestion
With the creation of the new Demonstration thread, perhaps we can move this out of the kata thread and into that thread. It's lonely with just the zanshin thread in it... ![]()

"Did the neighbours think you had lost the plot, or are they used to the crazy lady karateka by now?"
Gee.. I didn't even think of what the neighbours would think, other than I didn't want to get in the way of their cars as they drove by, nor did I accidently want to capture one of them walking by, and post them on the internet. Most of them should be used to me training in my Gi because I do so quite frequently outside on the grass in my backyard, or front yard. ( I'm trying to avoid damaging the grass too much. My back yard is wearing away to little muddy patches where I rotate on my support foot... sigh.. I have to give it a little rest now so that it can recuperate.) However, we have had a good amount of new neighbours move in near us. If they didn't know that I do Martial arts, I guess that they know it now. One of them arrived as I was filming this video, and parked his car. I shifted out of his way, and waited to the side on the grass patiently as he locked his car, and started walking to his home. I greeted him with a happy "good morning", and a wave. ( Friendly Canadians.. we can't help it.) I saw a little shock at how "unmartial"-like I was acting, and his face turned into a shy grin.I bet you that if I showed you my "Juji" kata, you will up and say "YES! That's it... that's the same as the Star kata" Get ready for another video coming.. but I'll have to work it around all of the summer activities in my home. I've got a handful of kids to keep occupied. |

"We use chudan punches instead of jodan though."
Oh.. We do chudan also. We change the level of the punch with the blocks. For example: Gedan berai - Jodan Gyaku Tsuki Uchi Uke - Chudan Gyaku Tsuki Jodan Uke - Gedan Gyaku Tsuki Thanks for going out and making the video. Obviously you're not too bothered what the neighbours think!! I like that. Oh, no problem. I'm glad that you liked the video. I enjoy watching videos, and I thought "Why not? Nobody expects me to be perfect. Even I don't expect myself to be perfect. I'll just do my best presentation of the kata that I can, and put it out. If only the best birds sang, the world would be a quiet place. I'm gonna sing..." Bothered by what the neighbours think? Ha ha ha.. A person cannot chose to have a family of 7 children in this time, society, and era, and worry about what the neighbours think. They think what they think.. I cannot control that part of the equation. What I can control is how "I" think, and I chose to make my decisions on what I believe is good for me. Why allow their perceptions to affect what I want in my life? I'd be a basketcase, because through my life experience, I've learned that people just don't seem to agree on anything... except pay raises, and extra vacations. |

"With the creation of the new Demonstration thread, perhaps we can move this out of the kata thread and into that thread. "
I realize that this has happened already. Thank you for this.. I can't help but feel humbled however. It is difficult for me to picture my efforts as "demonstration" worthy. Perhaps a video of a better version of the Kihon Sono Ichi kata will be submitted by a more advanced karate ka to replace mine soon, and then this thread could be placed back into the Kata thread? |

Oh I dunno...looked like a demonstration to me - not an exhibition, perhaps, but you were definitely demonstrating, to help me learn! Besides, it's not a competition. The video is very fit for purpose.

So you greeted your neighbour with a happy good morning and a wave instead of a bow and OSU! ?? Well done to have the ability to switch mode so quick!

I have only done ichi and ni. I don't know if we have san, must ask.
Ichi is gedan berai, yakutsuki chudan; ni is gedan berai, then move forward chudan uchi uke, forward again jodan uke, yakutsuki chudan if I remember right. Maybe someone else from IKO1 can help here? ps all in fighting stance. Confused yet? I am, lol |
