Thanks very much supergroup7, I enjoyed that!
It's the exact same as the second one we do at our dojo. Unfortunately I get a problem trying to watch some of these links where you need to start by clicking "I agree" then click on the box to watch. I have persevered, waited, but to no avail. I just look for it on youtube. OSU! |

Thank you RASor. I do not have much more to offer right now. I'm training, and working on my kata to build them up to an acceptable level. I'm hoping to compete in a Kyokushin Karate Tournament in the seniors division for Kata one day. Did I ever mention that I love kata? Osu |

OSU supergroup7,
I actually got back to Bo and Tonfa practice on a regular basis recently and I liked watching your video. I once learned and praticed Okinawan Kobudo (mainly Bo, Sai and Tonfa) technics a lot, but that was a while ago... I never really had a chance to go on further with the Kobudo technics afterwards when I started to pratice Kyokushin. I don't know if I'm wrong but in general, most people didn't seem to pay as much interest in learning (or teaching) Bo, Sai or Tonfa technics as much as they did for kumite, katas and tameshiwari. I occasionally would grab an old Bo stick before or after training sessions and practice few spins and moves to keep in shape, but that was about it. A friend once asked me: "where did you learn those moves?" "I just got Errol Flynn's old Robin Hood DVD movies collection"... (Not really... Just kidding...) Kobudo (Bo and Tonfa) sessions are now available at our dojo during the weekend beside our regular weekly training schedule, so I thought it might not be a bad idea to freshen up a few things. Learning the first two Bo katas went pretty well and a bit quicker than I first expected. I'm therefore willing to keep on going a bit further and get accustomed with more advanced ones in a near future. I've been looking for informations or reference on "Kyokushin" Bo katas (how many "true" Kyokushin Bo katas are they, their names and origins, the moves and combinations...) but didn't really find very much. My goal is to eventually bring my Bo technics to an equivalent advanced level as I did with Kyokushin katas. Yes as you've guessed I do also love katas... and I still practice an average of three per day. It's a very good way the end the day ![]() Any information or reference about Kyokushin Bo katas would be greatly appreciated. OSU! |

Thanks supergroup7, we don't practice the Bo katas so it was very good to watch.
I love kata also, and have been practicing them quite a bit lately as I hurt my back and have found them good at warming up the muscles and loosening up without overdoing it. |

If I may say so supergroup7, there's room for improvement. Only perform a kata fast when you have each individual technique crisp and sharp. That way when it's performed at speed it will all just come together and we will be able to see the distinct steps. Also, try playing with the tempo instead of melding everything into one long count.
I might have just had my sound really low, but was there a kiai? Or perhaps does your style not teach the kata with kiai? |

Satori,
Perhaps you could do up a video that incorporates the comments that have listed up. vapor

I promise everyone I'm doing my best to get something filmed. All I have at the moment on camera (though not yet computer) are point sparring fights. I'm doing my best to get gekisai dai (my tournament kata) filmed and uploaded asap.

Osu Satori,
Thank you for your advice: Only perform a kata fast when you have each individual technique crisp and sharp. That way when it's performed at speed it will all just come together and we will be able to see the distinct steps. Also, try playing with the tempo instead of melding everything into one long count. I like to do kata at three speeds: Slow, medium, and fighting speed. The Chion Kata that I did for this video was my "fighting speed" kata wherein I picture myself defending my life. I meld the blocks into the attack movements on purpose as if I was actually responding to someone who was striking me. My goal in this kind of kata is to make all the movements flow into each other. Since you have observed this kind of effect in my video, I am well pleased at achieving my goal. I agree with you that it is also good to show forth crisp, controlled movements that have great technique in it. I call this my "slow" kata. It can show forth good kime, and accent the various little details contained in each major block/ strike. If I was performing this kata for tournament, or demonstrating this kata for lower kyus, I would chose to do this version of kata. Then there is the medium kata wherein I work towards showing forth power. I concentrate on where I am placing the emphasis of each move. My blocks become attacks in this type of kata. I picture myself breaking something each time that I move. Each count becomes it's own moment in time. I find that the transitions from stance to stance in this type of kata is more halted, and has a stuttering "feel" to it. I was taught this kata with no kiai points. I have found that I do not personally "feel" a special moment in this kata where there is a build up of power that calls for a kiai. Each section of this kata seems to flow together naturally calling for an ebb, and flow of power. Where would a kiai point fit in? Would it be at the last Oroshi strike before you back up? Thank you everyone for your kind words about my video. Uchi Deshi, I have very similar sentiments as you. I have noticed that Bo, and weapons work doesn't seem as attractive to the various karate ka around me. I love the way that the weapon flows around, and with me. I like it so much, I don't mind it when the weapon argues with my hands, and I end up getting a thunk in the head, or leg. I just smile, and realize that I need to make friends with that weapon again, and figure out how we can work together. Any information or reference about Kyokushin Bo katas would be greatly appreciated. I agree. I would like to learn more about the history, and inclusion of kobudo into Kyokushin karate. How, when, where, who, what? There is so much that I would love to learn about it. Are there any videos of Sosai, or the Masters doing Weapons kata? |

We are taught the kata in 10 counts, with the kiai at the end of the 8th. This corresponds to the last thrust before stepping back.
I'm having troubles visualizing this kata in 10 counts. Let's see if I'm understanding the count correctly: Ichi: Down strike right side, thrust, vertical block Ni: Down strike left side, thrust, vertical block San: forwards block gedan, Jodan... Shi: Down strike, and thrust Go: forwards block gedan, Jodan Roku: Down strike, and thrust Shihi: Forwards block gedan, Jodan Hachi: Down strike, and thrust ( Would the kiai be for both movements, or just the thrust?) To get back to starting point would be another 7 movements... adding to a total of 15 movements for the kata. Am I getting the right idea? |

Satori's upcoming and overdue video demonstration should clear up the confusion I would think.

Seeing how I clearly said I don't know this kata, I would think you're plain wrong.
