I saw a video from a Japanese Ashihara dojo, and it was the same thing. Amazing how warm-up in Japan is so much different than here in Europe. It must be because of the climate.

Nope - our warm up follows pretty much the same lines - don't do everything in the clip every time (and sometimes add out own stuff and/or variations) - but it's pretty similar. Unfortunately no good looking blokes doing their warm up with their top off - that would get my blood mooving!!

In the dojo in Asakusa, Tokyo, all of the moves in the second video were done, in the same order, without deviation, regardless of who was instructing that day.
(Kamio Shihan is quite strict that things are done as Sosai instructed) vapor

That is exactly the warmup that I was taught. It is great to know it is preserved on you-tube...fantastic! It's also kinda weird (good) to see Sosai giving the same instructions that I have heard and given on so many occasions...makes me feel somehow connected to all the kyokushin and related karate-ka.

Thats essentially the same warm up I learned when I started training. Not too sure about the situps in the basic training vid - clasping the hands behind the head??
And as for the bloke with his top off - isnt that a very young Kenji Midori. And ive seen DKKCs instructor with his top off - shudder!

Osu, the warm ups at the places I have trained at are basically the same with slight variations depending on style. The warmups in KKNY and Japan were exactly the same.

Its a burlap of some sort and yeah its for skin conditioning. Its like getting excessive Rugburn then you let it heal and do it again and again.

You know, with some minor differences (style, specific wrist stretches), that second warmup looks a lot like what I have always done in Aikido and jujutsu classes. I guess there are a lot of similarities in traditional Japanese martial arts warmups.
