Here's one more video of Ryuuji doing kata-- this time it's Seipai, and he actually gets it right the first time!
Incidentally last week our dojo moved to a new location-- it was really tough work moving all the mats and equipment but eventually it got done!(The sound is kinda messed up at the beginning but it gets better about halfway through... sorry )Eadro on blip.tv By the way, the shihan gave Ryuuji his own brand-new dojo to run, and it opened for business on April 1. So if any of you find yourselves looking for a dojo in Yokohama to train in, may I suggest ours...? ![]() |

I really like the way he performs the kata - he seems very relaxed yet the technique looks strong. I've been trying to achieve this but it still eludes me. (any tips? ... anyone?
)Really nice!

Thanks so much for the comments!
DKKC-san, I too wish I knew Ryuuji's secrets. He's here sitting next to me and here's his tips. A lot gets lost in the translation so here's his advice in his own words: 表情は若干緩める。技が決まる瞬間までリラックスした状態が望ましい。インパクトの瞬間0だった力を100 にする心持ちで。当然ながら丹田は適度に緊張しているほうが良い。黙想系の型は動きの早いところとゆっくり 力強いところがあるのでその辺のメリハリもバッチリにしましょう。GANBATE!! And my attempt at a translation: Relax your face a little bit [make sure you're not unconsciously clenching your jaw or anything like that]. The best way to do it is to make sure that your body is relaxed until the instant your attack connects. If you're doing a punch, imagine that your power level is at 0 until the second your punch connects, at which point your power level should jump to 100. As always, you should hold strength in the muscles just below your belly button. For kata that start with mokusou [like Yantsu or Kanku], be aware of which attacks should be done with a lot of force and which should be done with less force. YOU CAN DO IT !! I hope that helps! I have a long way to go before I master this myself.... Ganbarimashou!!! ![]() |

Dear StarKodama,
Congratulations on the opening of Horie Sensei's Dojo. May he have more and more students. Is there a dojo website or can you tell us more about the dojo? OSU!

Starkodama? Why is it that I watched the same Kata video both times that I clicked on the link in this thread, and in the other thread ("Kanku")? Did I miss something??

It's a little hard to see, but see the list of videos to the right? The video called Nishiguchi 5 is Seipai, and Nishiguchi 4 is Kanku. (Nishiguchi is the name of my dojo

OH! Thank you! Now I can see them! Gee.. Duh!
Congratulations on the dojo! Were these videos taken in your new location, or old location? OSU! How talented he is! You can see how much he's trained with dedication in each movement of his kata. I totally appreciate how he can lift his whole body off of the floor in a parralel way through the impulse of his front leg in zenkutsu dachi during the Kanku kata. Oh my gosh! Will I be expected to do such a thing when I get higher in rank??? I do hope that my black belt comes with invisible attached wings. Last edited by supergroup7; 05-11-2008 at 02:45 PM. |
