Sabaki Challenge Spirit, March 22nd 2008

22/3 The 14th Sabaki Challenge Spirit (Ashihara World Championship) will be held in Denmark- Viborg. TEAM SWEDEN Fighters: Andreas Tallroth, Ronny Gerdin, Robin Öhrstedt, Carlos Canas, André Åberg, Daniel Sveder, Tomas Eriksson, Peter Bucht Coach: Per Backman and Nina Segerman Sponsor: BUDOMASTER If you have info on your country and/or other participants you can post them in this thread.

We have for the moment only 1 active fighter and he is not able to attend this years competition due to a promotion training/evaluation at his job that runs at the same period.

Keep us updated.
Do you know anything about the opposition? I dont really know much about the Ashihara top fighters, so I would love to hear more!

Johan Fredriksson Bodens Bushido- Silver Medal in 2006 heavyweight, he also was a silvermedalist at the F.I.S.T tournament 2005. He is currently working in Afghanistan (he is a officer in the swedish army). On vacation back in sweden a few weeks ago he did some sparring with Daniel Sveder who coached him in 2006 and who is now making his own World Cup debut. I heard Johan really i MEAN REALLY almost screamed cause he was missing karate so much. Perhaps we will see him in the future, he is still young and a really big talent. He hasnt been active since 2006 though..
Some more info since you requested it: Andreas Tallroth, Ronny Gerdin, Robin Öhrstedt made their knockdown debut at the German Open in november. You could say that this was there "test" to be approven to enter the world cup. For these fighters it will be their first WC. Tomas Eriksson is making his 3:e WC. Carlos Canas, André Åberg, Peter Bucht I dont really have that much info on. I think Peter has enterd WC before but I am not sure..

More general info (sadly I have been too lazy too update it - sue me).
Great to see so many Swedes. A shame that Johan Fredriksson will not enter however, I remember he put up a good show in 2006, where he placed second. The Danish team is not very large this year, I fear. Many people who were supposed to enter, has run into unfortunate injuries and other problems. I can not tell you a definite list, but this is who I believe is entering: Daniel Neumann, Marie Petersen, Michael Villekjær, Kirsten Smith, Julius Bjerrekjær and Dennis Johansen. I might have forgotten a few, though I have not heard much. There are some maybe's, pending on form and doctor's opinion. Perhaps I know more after saturday's practice. Hope to see you there! Osu! (Also, I will try to finish the list of results this weekend).

Weigh-in for all fighters: Friday from 10 am.
Preliminary fights: Saturday 9 am - 4 pm. Finals: 6 pm - 9 pm. Many spectacors invade a local restaurant called Jensen's Bøfhus during the 2 hour break, though I'm not so sure what people will do this year. I'm not sure how many will spectace, plus we received crappy service at the restaurant last year and I had to pay double price. Is any of you K4L'ers going to the afterparty, though?

Sabaki.dk is the official site, though it has not been updated for years. Pictures will most likely be up on Ashihara Karate Danmark instead, maybe a few other sites. I'm not sure I'll be there for the party, it depends on who else is going and how much money I have. I declined beeing a referee, so I don't get the free tickets.

You heard right. He fought decently, and actually won this years heavyweight division. Here are the results of the Danish fighters:
Women middleweight (-60): Gold - Marie Petersen (DAI Denmark) Women heavyweight (+60): Silver - Kirsten Smith (DAO Denmark) Light middleweight (-70): Bronze - Michael Villekjær (DAI Denmark) Light heavyweight (-80): Bronze - Daniel Neumann (DAI Denmark) Heavyweight (+80): Gold - Brian Jacobsen (DAI Denmark) Branches: 1st - ITERA Russia 2nd - DAI Denmark 3rd - Bucharest Romania One remarkable thing was that there was only 3 fighters in the womens lightweight division. They all won 1 fight, noone scored any points and all weighed exactly 52.7 kg. The referees were unable to decide which of them was the better, so for the first time the 1st place was split between the 3 fighters. I will keep you posted on results, photos and videos. Osu!
