Unfortunately, I can not attend the America's Cup this year, and it's a shame because I think I may have a good friend competing in it this year. However, I don't know how many of you are familiar with Shihan Kenji Fujiwara (unbelievable karate-ka!). If you are not, Fujiwara Shihan was Sosai's uchi deshi, I believe from 1977 to 1980. He then came to the US and served as uchi deshi with Soshu Oyama. He fought in the 2nd World Tournament in 1979. He is an inspirational karate-ka and an amazing man. He resigned from World Oyama Karate many years ago and remained independent for quite a few years, until several years ago when his Sempai, Kancho Royama, asked him to be a part of Kyokushinkan.
In any case, Fujiwara Shihan is hosting his first semi-contact tournament in Connecticut on the same date and I am already committed to supporting him. I will not go back on my word. Shihan Fujiwara expects that his first event will be a small one, but I have pledged to do anything I can to help him and make it grow for the future. Plus, it's a good opportunity for my students. I really wish I could watch. It's always an exciting event and the skill level is pretty high. But it's not meant to be this year. I hope you all enjoy it. If I may, if any of you wish to attend or send students to Shihan Fujiwara's event, just send me a PM. Osu, Miguel Rios

I might try and make it out to watch. All depends if I can score a free plane ticket and housing. I'll let you all know if I make it out there.

I heard last night that LA will send 3 fighters. Senapi Shohei who fought in the 9th WT and Team Cup in Russia will be there, along with 2 junior fighters. I also heard Alejandro Navarro, Damian from Bulgaria, and Lechi will also compete this year in NYC.
Sounds like it will be exciting. Unfortunately yours truly is planning to be in Munich instead for Oktoberfest with a short detour in Amsterdam. Perhaps I'll bring a gi and train in the Netherlands?? Any dojo doors open to me? ![]() |

OSU,
Unfortunately my student fighting has injured his knee and will not be able to compete. We don't know how serious the injury is yet, he has an MRI scheduled which will give us a better idea shortly. As such, I won't be going to the tournament. It's an expensive trip and I have a lot of dojo related travelling this fall for tests, Banff camp etc, so where I can economise I must. Enjoy everyone who will be there, I look forward to the reports, and best of luck to anyone who is fighting. ![]() |

Dear Deaken,
I wish your student a speedy recovery and for sure he will come back stronger at future tournaments. OSU!

My student had his ultrasound last Monday and nothing seems torn (great news) but he needs to recover slowly to prevent a more serious injury. I am taking him with me to the Banff camp to train with Shihan Isobe and Filho instead as consolation.
Look for him and the rest of our team at the North American Weight Category in Montreal in March 2009. Thank you for the well wishes, I will pass them long, and to those of you attending NY, have a great time. ![]() |
