Karatedo Shurenkan Seminar Date Has Been Set!
As many of you are aware, those of us in the NY/NJ area having been working diligently to create a community of budo karate-ka, united by our love of karate. To that end, we have been working together to create opportunities where members of the various dojo and groups can come together and train. Our goals are simple: to do away with the political lines that so often divide us, to learn from one another, and to create new and lasting friendships. We have had a few sessions so far and I am happy to report that we see more and more new faces with each successive event.
The last event hosted by Sensei Tetsuya Sato of Shinkyokushin NY was very successful. Judging by the response, everyone had a great time. It is now time to build upon that momentum. On Saturday, August 9th, Karatedo Shurenkan will conduct a Jissen Karate Workshop at its dojo in Bayonne, New Jersey. The workshop will emphasize basic ashi no sabaki (footwork and movement) drills with an emphasis on kuzushi (disrupting the balance) and kawashi (dodging attacks). The seminar is open to all Karate Dojo and karate-ka and will be run in a way that everyone will benefit—from the newest beginner to the most advanced. Afterward we will celebrate with food and drink (aka beer!!!). Since many people will already be traveling to New Jersey, I thought it best to have the after party catered at the dojo instead of going to a restaurant. Don't worry, the dojo is air conditioned! The food will be provided by a superb Brazilian BBQ restaurant. And did I mention there will be ample BEER!!!!!! (Of course there will also be soft drinks for any underaged participants.) Please mark your calendar for this event! I really hope we have a good turnout. Directions to the dojo and applications will be made available shortly at the Karatedo Shurenkan website. Feel free to email me at info@bayonnekarate.com with any questions you may have. There is one price for both events and I strongly urge everyone to stay for the food and drink as well. • Students under 18 years old need to have permission from their instructor & guardian • Fee is non-refundable for any reason What to bring: Karate-Gi, Knuckle guards/Gloves, Shin/Instep pads, water, Mouthpiece (recommended), Groin cup (recommended) Itinerary 1:00 Greet in and opening remarks 1:05 Warm up 1:15 Kihon 1:40 Renzoku (basic combinations from fighting stance) 1:55 Water break 2:00 Movement and positioning (getting into an advantageous position) Judging Maai (distance) Blocking and countering against strikes Blocking and countering against kicks 3:00 10 minute break 3:10 Initiating a strong attack Practicing reaction drills “Sparring” Miscellaneous 4:00 Closing remarks and greet out. 4:15 - ???? Great Stuff guys - you are putting us Europeans (can I say that after we voted No on the Lisbon treaty?) to shame.
Hope it goes well for you and lets have lots of pics - maybe we should have a gallery section for these?

With any luck I should have a pdf version of the application available online by tomorrow or Saturday (July 4th and 5th). I will download directions to the dojo via car and train.
I am very excited about this and hope to see many of you there. Osu, Miguel Rios

That gallery idea has merit. Each event with X number of pics? Good resource, particularly as we age. ![]() Osu!

It's a great price and sounds like a lot of fun. I may try to make this since I haven't done anything close to knockdown kumite for about 2 years(everything here is TKD, MMA/BJJ so I've been doing mma/bjj). About an 8 hour drive for me and the only problem is I'm getting back from leave on the 5th(going to Vegas
). $50 for an awesome day of training and partying afterwards with ample beer and food is a very good deal.

PowerofOne,
If you could make it, that would be great. I'm flattered that you are even considering taking an 8 hour drive to attend. Osu, Miguel Rios

Osu!
I'm spreading the word to a few others as well. Who knows how many will come, but I have to ask: Do we have a number cap? Osu!

Dent,
I have been seriously debating capping it off at 50 so that training will be comfortable. Let me give it a bit more thought and really examine the size of the dojo, and I will let you know definitively in a few days. Osu, Miguel Rios

What a shame we can't videoconference in. But maybe that is an option to try for the future. We could skype connect seminars around the globe, and see how many people we get all training at once!!!!!

Dent,
Thank you so much for your suggestion. I think that I will definitely do a "seats available" update. On a different note, after speaking with a few of the instructors yesterday, it was determined that it would be best if the event began at 1:00p.m instead of 11:00 am. Hopefully that will not deter anyone from coming. Osu, Miguel Rios

UPDATE!!!
SEMINAR START TIME HAS BEEN CHANGED Hello Everyone, It has come to my attention that some instructors run morning classes at their dojo on Saturdays. It would be unfair to ask these instructors to cancel their classes to support this event. It would be especially unfair to those students, who pay to attend their dojo, to have a class cancelled. Our goal is to have people train more, not less. Therefore, I have decided to change the time to 1:00 p.m. I hope this will not deter anyone from participating in this event. I have edited the original post, to reflect the time change. I sincerely apologize for the change. I only wish to be fair. Hopefully the change has been made early enough, so that it will not really affect those who intended to participate. Osu, Miguel Rios Karatedo Shurenkan
