Chest Protection
Hello all,

I'm supposed to be getting hold of a chest guard for sparring/tournaments, just wondering if most people use one? And if so, who's the best supplier - all the sites I have looked at go up to 36d max and I'm a 38f. One New Zealand-based supplier asked what the rules are for tournaments over here, and I'm alos clueless on that point...

Can anyone help?

Loving this site!

Osu!

First off CatChad welcome to the forums.

If you are in Yorkshire (come on Leeds) you can contact someone from the BKK - they should be able to help you - perhaps even supply you.

There are also plenty of knowledgable people here who can help.

Osu Catchad,
Being a guy, I'm not familiar with sizes of chest guards.
What I do know is that, in our organisation, complete chest guards that also cover the belly, are not allowed. Only cups. I think that you have to check with your organisation first, before you spend your money on a "forbidden" type.

Osu,

Welcome CatChad! Yes you really do need one as you will not be able to fight in competition with out one. I use one and always in the dojo too. I found mine pretty easily because im only a small girl Hmmm not sure as to what sizes are available up to.

The BKK supplier is Kyokushin UK Limited based in Essex.

You can email them at: keaveney@globalnet.co.uk or telephone: 01245256891

They are very helpful and are probably the best people to help

If youre looking for quality chest protectors that actually offer protection not just discomfort, I reccomend these companies;
1.Fairtex
2.Ši“¬‹Z—p•i@Ši“¬‹ZƒvƒƒOƒbƒYƒVƒ‡ƒbƒv ƒCƒTƒ~
Muay Thai Stuff - Thaiboxing MMA products Shorts Boxing Gloves Equipments

Via Isami you can purchase Isami brand as well as WINNING brand chest protectors. The WINNING is the Lanborghini of chest protectors. Fairtex, TWINS and Isami are also top notch. Theyll offer protection and actually last several years.
Good Luck.

Osu,
Also be careful about what type you buy. Some competitions don't allow the plastic "rigid" type because of the danger to the opponent's hand/wrist when punching to the chest area. Usually it will have to be a "soft-style" padded chest guard.

Welcome! Always nice to see newcomers asking good stuff. A word of caution: make Sure you get used to your chest protector, but don't always use it. Make sure you Don't feel vulnerable without it!

If the NZ supplier is Gina get the biggest she offers. We have some & they're impressive - they will also do the job for your size (they're cone style). If it's not Gina don't buy it. She's the only one that sells cones in NZ & the plastic shields are nasty.

aunty ichigeki,

are the ones by gina, the leather and sheepskin cone ones? I have seen some of the girls with those ones, and was wondering where they get them from. I knew they're from NZ but didn't know if the were still being made. I heard they're hand-made, especially for kyokushin fighting??

Like shin pads there is an issue of uniformity here - same tournament , different guards, varying levels of protection.

I have seen short fighters wearing the plastic chest guards and it almost covers the entire torso. This drastically reduces target areas. I would love to see standardisation of protective equipment within each group (and across all groups??? Perhaps wishful thinking)

I think it's standarised in WKO. Chest-Protector must be plastic and cups, so it does not cover the solar-plexus.

I remember on my first fight, that the referee told my opponent to get another protector, since it covered the solar-plexus. She was a bit angry at that...

It is really silly if the protector covers the solar plexus! I will ask the Shushin politely "so where should I place my shita tsuki?".

Also keep in mind that any hard type chest protectors (the ones that look like they can be used for ice hockey) can be quite dangerous for the person wearing them as well. The plastic around the edges can dig into the body with a hard hit. I've heard of one case where someone took a hard mawashi to the side and the protector's hard plastic dug into the ribcage. It caused quite a mess...

Yes, I wear a chest protector. I have found that the Cool Guard one is really nice to wear. It offers just the right amount of protection, and also is comfortable to wear.

Mmmm! Sheepskin! What a nice idea! LOL! I haven't seen Uggs for boobs! Gina's ones are synthetic leather on the outside (colour coded by size ) and the inside lining is some kind of soft lycra. Thinking about it I've seen Japanese ones that are white/cream & look kind of fluffy around the edge. Maybe you mistook those ones for sheepskin.

If you find one from Japan that you like, let me know....

I am touching foot in Japan tomorrow, and will be there for about 10 days!!

(I am in Korea right now!)

I can pick one up, and ship it off you --and handle all of the tricky ordering process in Japanese too!!
