Never doubted it for a minute.

My observation of Sensei's with a serious long term relationship with a kohai is that they ARE generally harder on them. However, during the "silly season" - the very early days of a relationship when both parties are full of happy hormones, it can be pretty hard to not let that silly grin of contentment show every time you just LOOK at your beloved...

That is a very lopsided remark. Unless you know something the rest of us don't, it seems apparent to me that men are responsible for at least 50% of the dating in the Dojo.

As has been said before, we are all people first, and Karateka second.

I'm hoping the last part of this comment is at least partially sarcastic, but actually, my boyfriend asked ME out. I said no at first but he persisted for a good six months!

And besides, a world without love isn't a world I want any part of.

LOL! I suppose Ryuuji would be a good model of osu no seishin, but perhaps not quite in the same way as Sosai intended.

I have noticed that when a new female student starts in our dojo (especially if she's one of the young women from the local university), all of the fellas suddenly start training very hard! Our stances are extra deep, our strikes twice as sharp, and our kiais very loud.

I believe it's natural for men to up their pace a bit in the presence of a beautiful woman. Just part of our evolutionary drive.

Now the smart one will let the young bucks burn out in the early part of the class, and then laugh himself silly when their tanks are empty for Kumite...

I could add that I have some issues with my non karate girlfriend understanding my needs to train. Would be nice to meet a woman who understands that karate is a way of life, and that as a Sensei I have no choice but to train twice as much as my students.

I'm watching an interesting relationship develop. My son has his first real girlfriend, and she happens to be a student at another Dojo. When they met, he was senior in grade, but the promotions at her Dojo are fairly rapid, to say the least. She is now about to pass him in grade, and he is steeling himself for the teasing that will follow.

I wonder how it will all pan out...?

I suppose you've already tried dragging her to the dojo and having her see it firsthand? It would be so great if you could somehow turn her into a hardcore trainer. Is there any way you could train together? You could go running. She might even like hitting the sandbag!

I got together with my sempai at my first tournament (hes a few grades ahead of me). I went to learn Kyokushin and ended up engaged and pregnant lol

... and not necessarily in that order - ha ha!

Talking of training harder when a pretty girl turns up... it's very weird how our 7am session has been devoid of girls this week since the young instructor went to Ethiopia!!! Usually it's mostly girls!
