Have you ever dated someone from dojo(Kohai or Sempai, Sensei!?!?, Shihan!!?!?!?!?) in your karate life? Did it turn in to a serious relaionship? osu

Yes, I have...my only opinion on such a thing is when you're an instructor don't date students. I've seen this stuff go bad first hand many, many times. Some students look up to the instructor too much and some instructors, unfortunately, take adavantage of this. I used to know one instructor very well that "hooked up" with many of his female students, even marrying one, and even cheating on her with other students(I hope he's stopped).
Anyhoo, I dated a female that was the kid's karate instructor at a school I used to teach adult's muay thai class at. I live on the other side of the country now but still keep in contact with her and when I'm in town I see her(saw her last night). I honestly almost think there should be a rule and/or law forbidding martial art instructors from dating students, but I know that will never happen. I know that not all instructors that date students take advantage of it but some definitely do.

As an instructor, it is a good idea not to date your students. As the saying goes, "You don't crap in the kitchen" or something like that...

On a positive side there, i am engaged with a kyokushin karateka. She isnt one of our students though.
I can also name a few couples that seem to have met through karate and are now happily married. There has been a thread about this a while ago, specifically discussing relationships in the dojo and when there is a significant difference in age or grade. Osu

I know of one couple who met through kyokushin, they were not teacher and student though. They have been happily married for many years and now also run a dojo together.

I'm sure there's a similar thread somewhere else? I married my Sensei & we lived happily ever after. There's so many Kyokushin couples in our organisation I was thinking recently we should have a Couple's Kata section at a tournament for a laugh!

Found Love in the Dojo and now, nearly 20 years on and three kyu grades, I mean kids latter still going strong - have had our ups and downs like all couples but at least we both understand our desire for bruises
. And yes this thread is similar to another but no LOVE in that one, was more about rumpy pumpy.

Look as long as it it done in a manner of respect and not for just to get a piece, or using your position to take advantage of someone/others.... (this goes either way man or woman) then so be it.
One does not controll where we find happiness/love in the opposite or same sex. So you as a Sensei, Senpai or student, meet another student, (sensei or senpai) before you are Sensei you are human!!!!!!!! Last edited by Spirit; 01-06-2008 at 01:33 PM. |

My fiance started kyokushin at my dojo about two years ago, we dated and now we are engaged. This is the photo from last summer up in Vail, Colorado when I give her the ring.

I agree with Spirit however I think we unconsciously hold our Sensei to a higher moral standard!
