Try football (or soccer) shin pads they absorb most of the energy but theres still enough there to give you some good bruises and strengthen your shin.

Fairtex make good shinguards and do thigh guards in a similar HD black vinyl for serious protection, most people in the dojo have the white elasticated numbers but we dont tend to use them much,i find im lazier than normal with my kicks if im using shin pads the potential pain of a misplaced kick helps my focus .

Billy we use the same ones - problem is that even after one use they stink and it doesnt take too many washes for the elastic to go so it ends up being a trade off.
To be honest I tend to use them less and less as I get older.

I use Budo Nord shin pads with velcro straps. They are quite decent, but after a few years, the velcro will refuse to stay in place. The same as Kris posted earlier, but with a simpler design and no protection for the achilles heel. |

I use the basic white Isami guards, no velcro straps. They're great but get pretty stinky pretty fast. D:

So, is the consensus the slip ons hold better or the tie ups? Is their any that are a combination of both?

Do you guys suggest getting the whole foot protection or half foot? Vinyl or non vinyl?

I've switched from the black leather (pro) Windys to the white cotton Isami w/ velcro straps. I'm now thinking its better to condition the shins with the lighter guards + I was slightly bothered that my Windys were black. Back to the whole conformity issue from that other post...
![]() FutureProdigy, go with the half foot. You will need to make a proper chusoku. OSU! |

I will second this. I have some nice Combat Sports brand shin guards with a full foot covering. It really interferes with making a good ball foot.

Mine are leather on the outside with a rigid, shaped foam liner covered by cloth on the inside (toward the shin). You can't throw these in the washing machine, but they don't seem to get stinky like the basic white foam ones do.
I've seen some Twins brand shin guards at our dojo that are vinyl on both the outside and the shin side. The good thing about this is that they're easy to wipe down after use. The bad thing is that they're slippery and don't stay in place. I believe the guy who has them wears them outside his dogi bottoms now. That's certainly not ideal. The vinyl (or other synthetic) stuff seems sturdy otherwise. My sensei occasionally tells us that the white foam shin guards, when left unwashed, start to smell like a dead body. This is usually after someone has accidentally left their shin guards in the dojo overnight. Having been subjected to a partner using these bio-weapons in the past, I have to agree. ![]() |

Osu!
I bought some of the Combat Sports neoprene ones, and while they don't move much, they are difficult/ frustrating to get on and off. Osu!
