Best shin guard/leg supporters?
What brand guards do you wear on your legs for kumite?
The ones that I got when I joined have seen better days, and the pad on the shin seems to slid around a little too much. I think that they were Isami brand. Good or bad experiences with different brands or shapes? vapor |

Most of us wear the white elastic ones. We just got some from Isami that have 2 additional straps that velcro around the leg. It will be interesting to see if these haven't fallen off by the time the shinpads get loose.
Some of the serious guys swear by the black vinyl ones by Isami - there are several copies but they don't have a great curve in them so they flop around & get annoying. Serious $$$$ though! |

We use the White elastic ones too but I have stopped using them in the dojo unless we are preparing for a tournament.

So, during normal practice outside of tourney prep time, you are going shin to shin, with no protection? vapor |

With me its a personal preference - I just wanted to get used to fighting without them as I dont compete anymore.

We wear Isami kneepads too which pretty much start where the shinpads stop - brilliant for stopping knee-shin injuries. |

One of the guys at the dojo had those this weekend...I am thinking these may be the style that I go with to replace my elastic ones... vapor |

These are the ones that I ended up buying...
I think this are exactly the ones that Aunty Ichigeki mentioned. ![]() They should be delivered tomorrow!! (I actually kind of wanted to get these in black, but yesterday morning, I stopped by the dojo and chatted with my Shihan about it, and he recommended/suggested getting the white ones...that made the decision an easy one!) So hopefully these will offer a little more protection, and not slip around on my lanky legs!! vapor Last edited by vapor; 09-27-2006 at 06:37 AM. |

Vapor, I use the fairtex shin guards...you can get them at www.fairtexgear.com . I've had them for years and they're the best. |

I use these. Same as above, but with velcro straps to keep them in place. Like them a lot.

Well mines are Impact (Jukado). It's the only brand from my manufacturer. They're pretty good and the Velcros are strong enough. Click here for a picture...

The ones vapor showed a pic of look very comfy! i seriously damaged my feet in my last tourny so i might well invest in some! I only use the white elastic ones and they dont give me very much protection at all. My dojo uses shinguards everytime we spar but another dojo i trained at once didnt use them at all! I had black shins for 3weeks no thanks...bruises should be saved for the tournaments!

I think the ones without velcro after a while gets strechted out and slides around your leg. Models with velcro straps stay in place.

In the last inter-dojo tourney that we had (Shihan oversees 5 dojo's), one of the guys from the other dojo's had the kind with the velcro...
Unfortunently they came loose, several times during his round (hard to believe that they could come loose so often in the span of a minute and a half). The fight had to be stopped while they were redone... The last time, the referee (Kimura-Sempai for those that have seen him in videos) bascially said, you will not be wearing these again, ever) vapor |

Vapor, let me know how they feel. Those pads look good, are they thick? Because it almost looks like boots. Do you have a link to the manufacturer?
I use the basic gear, all separate, i was told having them separate gave more flexibility to the foot. So I decided to start with that. I wanted the shin guard that protect the 3/4 of the foot, but only brown belt and black belt are allowed to use these in our dojo.

Actually they work pretty well. Much more protection on the top of the foot. I wouldn't say that the pads themselves are any thicker than the standard type, but the addition of the extra pad that rests on the top of the foot makes a big difference in my opinion.
Let me pull up the site that I bought it from, and post the link... vapor |
