I mentioned this before in another thread about M/P.
Mine is about 30 years old, a Cooper. It is formed by dropping in boiling water then placing in mouth to form it. The M/P fits well, never failed me and I still have all my teeth. I'll wash it in boiling water and then soak it in OJ or Apple juice to give it a taste. The big thing is that I use it when needed (maybe less than seienchin has urged) but I use it without hesitation and don't allow others sway me not to. It is a tool that is important to protect a vital part of your body, Teeth... |

As it was 30 years ago, perhaps it isn't top of mind, but did you do the boiling only once? In otherwords, were you able to get it ply enough that it got the fit on the first try, or did you have to go through the process a couple times to get it to fit the way you wanted? vapor

Did a little research on mouthguards...
Customguards.com - Protect Your Winning Smile US based company. Reasonable pricing for a custom mouth for the elite. You can get a custom logo on your mouthpiece for free with your order. Protech mouthguards are really popular amongst the MMA forums. Although I can't seem to pull up there website with some of the links that were posted. Slightly more expensive than O-Pro and Elite Guards. On another note... some medical insurance cover the procedure for a custom fitting and making by a dentist. Some users noted that the procedure in total was $150 and paid a deductible around $50. Consult your insurance as this is a great possibility to have a professional mold your teeth. Only catch is that you do not have the cool graphics or colors of O-Pro, Protech, or Elite Guards.

It did take a few times do to cut this off, snipe this, and then re boil to smooth out the cut edges. But it is pliable the first time yes, in-fact it still has my thumb print on it from the first boil (be careful not to have to hot of water). I still drop it in (very warm not boiling) water to re-adjust since thing change a little in the mouth every so often. Maybe best if you try very hot not boiling water first?!? It fits tight and I never have problems with it falling out/off teeth if I open my mouth, kiai... |

Shock Doctor produces an economical and customizable solution.
Shock Doctor :: Products :: Mouthguards I use one of theirs for dojo sparring. For tournaments in Japan, I'm required to use "official" IKO mouthguards which are fitted by an organization approved dentist. Apart from the IKO logo, the mouthguards are practically indistinguishable. Well, actually, I prefer the fit of the Shock Doctor mouthguard. |

If you're referring to Shock Doctor, no, but neither do the IKO mouthguards. The main benefit, as I see it, is reducing the chance of brain injury/concussion and jaw displacement. Your chin usually protects your lower teeth. The problem with that is, when you take a shot to the chin your teeth will transmit the shock directly to the soft mushy stuff between your ears. Mouth guards dampen the bad news to your brain by intruducing some cushioning between your upper and lower teeth.

Those don't look any worse than samples already mentioned. Try them out and let us know how you like them.

Hi Meguro,
I didn't know there were official IKO1 mouthguards. Are these just product sold by Isami or Ichgeki or are they something else? Do you have a picture that you could post to show us what they look like? |

Deaken, The IKO1 mouthguard looks like your conventional clear, upper-only mouthguard. It's perhaps a little softer than the DIY ones commonly available. The surface difference is the Kyokushin kanku and personal serial number imprinted on the mouth guard. When you check-in at the tournaments in Japan, you must present the official mouthguard, and depending on which category you compete in other "official" equipment. I believe leather MMA style "Ichigeki" gloves and knee-pads are now mandatory for certain categories. The mouthguard must be fitted by an IKO1 registered dentist. I'm not sure whether competitors visiting Japan suffer the same requirement. They probably get a waiver. If you're a member of a dojo in Japan and wish to compete, your sensei probably has a list of dentists near you. As far as I know Isami and Ichigeki mouthguards can be used for practice, but not for tournaments. |

Thanks,
I was more asking out of curiosity. I think that a mandated mouthguard program certified by a dentist is a good idea, especially for competitions open to all grades and ages. |

I agree. I tip my hat to IKO1 for making this compulsory. At last!!!!
