Even tho I'm not a beginner (in the strict sense of the word), my tip for beginners is
invest in a good mouthguard, and wear it, no matter what you local or international heroes do. No excuses, not ever. It protects you and it protects your partner from the sharp edges of your teeth.

How can I find out what a good mouthguard is?
Still need one

Paedde - the only "good" mouthguards (IMHO) are the ones that are custome made for you by a dentist or dental technician. They are not cheap, but they are MUCH cheaper than getting a broken tooth repaired.

The reason I recommend mouthguards for beginners is that then you just get used to it, and it is not some funny foreign thing in your mouth the day of your first tournament or big grading!

So should I buy a cheap for training and a good before my first tournament? (whenever it is )

Thanks for your advice

obviously timing to get into a dentist (making sure that your dentist can provide this service) and having the finances to make a custom fit moutpiece need to be taken into consideration.

If you can swing it, it would make sense to just go ahead and get the "good one", especially if you don't have a tourney next week!!!

That being said, and seienchin may disagree, for purposes of personal safety, and allowing your body to adapt (breathing espcially!), I would say that even a cheaper one would serve its purpose!

Paedde, that actually looks pretty good.

In term-s of protection offered - a non-custom mouthguard is about 20% effective at protecting your teeth, and they fall out a lot, thereby making people come to the conclusion that mouthguards are a nuisance and a waste of time. They are still ok for protecting other people from your teeth though, and for that reason alone, are better than nothing at all.

The service tha Paedde linked to looks like they are offering a quality, custom fitted mouthguard - gotta be better than off-the-shelf.

Paedde, seriously, your dentist WILL tell you to get a proper one made. So just ring up, and ask them how much it will cost, and compare it with the website.

If you intend to get one, just do it. There will be plenty of opportunties for losing teeth between now and January.

One of the saddest things I have ever seen was a kid with brain damage that could have been prevented by a bike helmet, and his bike helmet was wrapped up in Christmas paper under the tree when he had his accident. Somethings are not luxuries, and if you can afford it, don't put it off.

That's why I want to buy a cheap one until I get a better one.

(I think someone who can should write a summary in the wiki about that )

This very useful discussion about mouthguards has branched a bit away from kumite tips for beginners, so I have moved the relevant posts to a new thread.

I had one custom made by a dental technician.
Bought one for my son too.
If I am not mistaken the price was 35 euro (each).
It's a perfect fit.
