Sandbags
Hey all...
I got a question. My right foot is really weak. Had a major surgery on it, and i'm having a lot of difficulty in strengthening it right now. I have seen this low hanging sandbag at my dojo. It's very compact and pretty hard, and one kicks it with the foot as well as the shins to strengthen either or both. Anyone know how to make one or buy one? I would really like to have one at home so i can just keep kicking it and strengthen my feet as well as shins while just watching tv or something. Any information would be great! ![]() |

Hello Kansetsu,
Something like this? (Sorry, couldn't post the link yet. Search Shureido Okinawa, then go to the Makiwara section. There's a shin bag there.) I haven't found anything like it in the US, so I used my frame, and made the bag myself. Used a cheap gear bag, and filled it with sand housed in contractors plastic bags. Not very pretty, but effective. If I ever choose to pretty it up, I'll try and hang an uppercut bag from the frame. Experimentally yours Dent |

YES! the "Shin Strengthening Sandbag Set" is exactly what i am looking for. i am very surprised that i can't seem to find one for sale in the states! I mean like you i was thinking about making one, which i can, but just no time and kinda lazy as well...lol. But i guess unless i can find one here, i gotta build one like you did. Thanks a bundle Dent...

Ive made about 30 of these....I use the weave type large rice bags, and when it's empty I use slightly damp sand to fill it. it lasts for quite a while.

Hi EddieP,
We had the most basic one in the Singapore Hombu, and I loved kicking it. The bag was an old rice bag, and thanks to the humidity, the sand hardened to something just shy of concrete between classes. Not necessarily good for the ego, but great for conditioning. ;-) Osu! |

The sandbag that was in the dojo in Asakusa used a frame that was made from metal scaffolding poles. Obviously they were modified in length, so they wouldn't be up to the ceiling...but if you find someplace that sells scaffolding, it will have the connector joints too, which should allow you to assemble framing with little difficulty.

OoO...that's a good idea...if not scaffolding, then i can utilize pipes and pipe connectors instead and make a frame that way....Great idea...thanks Vapor...!!
