Starting off id go with Bag gloves - some people use just wraps and some dont use anything at all.

I`d use nothing or only wraps, depending on what i have to do the days after and if i can afford to loose the skin on my knuckles... if i have important meetings i cant be sitting there with broken skin on my knuckles.... (i have had some weird stare`s in the past)

I think it also depends on the heavy bag. I never go without bag gloves on the really really heavy bag in the dojo, otherwise tape or wraps are enough (like Ksan said, loosing skin can get you weird stares...)

If you are new to punching a bag I would go slow and make sure you keep your wrists straight. Use Wraps and learn how to wrap them for begining and use Bag Gloves. You may want to start doing knuckle push-ups also since that will make your wrists stronger.

i like to use the tape-wrap myself, but bag gloves are good.i feel the tape-wrap is less constricting than the bag gloves and i feel i can punch faster with the tape-wrap.

I have the white Karate cotton style gloves like the shin pads, but now I have some of these as now after many years of use the cotton ones have gone to a better place

Osu!

Personally IŽd recommend you 'wean' yourself off the gloves asap - lots of knuckle push-ups!

Osu,

I find using the bag until the point of skin breaking and then switching over to the gloves works

I avoid the skin breaking by using boxing tape. Don't like the gloves as I can make a proper fist.
