Kancho Matsui's name change?
Why was he known as Akiyoshi in his earlier days and known as Shokei now?

Osu! Any idea when he changed his name to the current one? After the 4th world tournament or right after he became Kancho?

From what Ive been told, Akiyoshi is the japanese way to read the kanji for his name. Shokei is the "chinese" way to read it.
Apparently it is a tradition to do this change among higher officials at court and other persons of importance.

It makes the person either sound more dignified or more "stuck up", depending on who you ask.
In Matsuis case, apparently Sosai was the one who started using the alternate pronounciation, but Matsui didnt make it official until after he became kancho.

Osu!

I also heard that 'Shokei' actually means 'Excution' in Japanese. Kancho's current name should be spelt "Shoukei" instead of "Shokei".

I thought Shokei meant 'inheritor' & was a reference to him obtaining his leadership position as Oyama's successor rather than in his own right.

yeah, in medieval japan a young samurai changed(or the name was changed) his name at the time he'd become considered as an adult - at the fourteen or so.

ps
