Maybe the fact is that if you did a servay in Japan then a servay in another country about the flexability of kids that by luck japan's kids just happend to be more flexible.
Or maybe it's just a steriotype? Who knows ? If you get the definate answer plese tell me LOL ! ![]() Osu,

I am more impressed by the white mats. It reminds me of a PrideFC ring! I wish we could swap out the blue ones in our dojo for these.

I think it would be inappropriate to say that a nation's youth is much more flexible than another. Children can improve their dynamic and static flexibility due to the fact that their body do not respond to those exercises like we grown-ups do. Also, according to some famous stretching trainers such as Th. Kurz and Pavel Tsatsouline, it is very dangerous for a child to perform (or prepare himself) for splits. This kind of flexibility affects the child's body. It's much better to do dynamic flexibility: Mae and Yoko Keage.

I'm tempted to post a pic of our kiwi kids trying to do what those (Japanese) kids are doing. 95% of our kids are lucky if they can get their legs to 90 degrees & put their elbows on the ground! I think there's a genetic effect in there somewhere! Great point about kids & static stretching tho!

Japanese people sit on the floor alot more than Western people. Until recently there were more squat toilets in Japan than Western toilets. Toilets in schools are often squat toilets. Japanese people are often but not always good a sitting in a deep squat.
however if you look closely at that photo some of the students (maybe half have good flexiblity it is the 40 percent who have extremely good flexibility that make the photo stand out. In the dojo's that I trained in Japan a lot fewer Japanese children had extremely good flexibility. I remeber doing some volleyball training with 25 13-15 year old girls who dont train in martial arts and their flexibility was worse than mine (i'm a 30+ year old male). So in that photo you have a group of children who train in martial arts and maybe have been training since they were three/four years old. Generally the Japanese population wouldnt be that more flexible than the Western population especially since they are eating more Macudonaludo, kentaki-, mosu ba-ga- etc Osu
